Our learning Intention

To be able to apply formative assessment in the Home Economics classroom. Our success criteriaWe can

● Distinguish between learning outcome and learning intention● Identify how to create learning intentions● Develop methods to co-create success criteria● Explore alternative active teaching methodologies for

remote learning.

Formative Assessment

Assessment for Learning (formative) is not an attack on assessment of learning (summative assessment). These are complementary approaches -it’s about getting the balance right.

It is the teacher who decides the balance and timing of formative and summative assessments;

(“Putting Assessment for Learning into Practice,” David Spendlove, 2009)

Formative Assessment TerminologyLearning outcomeLearning outcomes are statements in curriculum specifications to describe the knowledge, understanding, skills and values students should be able to demonstrate after a period of learning.

Learning intentionsA learning intention for a lesson or series of lessons is a statement, created by the teacher, that describes clearly what the teacher wants the students to know, understand, and be able to do as a result of specific learning and teaching activities. Clear learning intentions should help students focus not just on the task or activity taking place but on what they are learning.Learning intentions are always linked to one or more learning outcomes in the specification.

Flipgrid

Flipgrid is a website that allows teachers to pose questions or activities for students, in

which a student responds via a short video.

Responses can be 15 seconds to five minutes, and a maximum recording time can be

set.

Flipgrid is a way to gather student responses delivered at their own pace without feeling

"on the spot" in the classroom.

Feedback can be inputted for the student, success criteria/rubrics can also be created.

Low achievement is often the result of students failing to understand what teachers require of them.

Learning Intentions

The context of learning is simply the actions, activities and/or tasks students will be doing to achieve the Learning Intention.

Knowledge Learning Intentions

Clarified Learning Intentions

• Clear: focus on what will be learned in the lesson, as distinct from what students will do in the lesson

• Useful: focus is on concepts, skills or knowledge that is usedrather than focusing on imparting knowledge

• Can be transferable to a similar context

Success Criteria

Page 22: Formative Assessment Learning Intentions & Success

Formative Assessment Terminology

Success criteria are linked to learning intentions and therefore to the learning outcomes. They are developed by the teacher and/or the student and describe what success looks like. They help the teacher and student to make judgements about the quality of student learning.

(NCCA, 2019)
