At approximately 7 p.m. on Friday, March 13, Forks Police Officer Mike Gentry was in a vehicle pursuit ending in a collision with suspect Dillan J. Klepps of Forks.

The suspect is still at large for multiple charges in-cluding a Department of Corrections warrant, eluding a police vehicle, reckless driving, criminal trespass 2, obstructing a law enforcement officer, malicious mischief 2, and driving while license suspended in the third degree.

This car came to rest on an embankment around 7 p.m. Friday, March 13, behind a Rayonier gate near Valley View along Bogachiel Way after being involved in a police chase. The driver fled the scene. Gentry initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle for expired registration on Fifth Avenue and Bogachiel Way. The driver attempted to hide the vehicle in a parking lot, and when the of-ficer entered the parking lot, the driver positioned the vehicle in a head-on fashion where Gentry was able to identified the driver as Dillian J. Klepps. Klepps accelerated toward the police vehicle at a high rate of speed causing Gentry to swerve out of the suspects way to avoid a head-on collision.

Gentry proceeded to follow the suspect for eluding a police

vehicle and a Department of Corrections escape warrant. The vehicle continued to elude the police vehicle reaching 90 mph on Bogachiel Way where the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with a Rayonier Gate at the end of Bogachiel Way.

After rolling the vehicle, the suspect got out of the vehicle and continued to ignore Gen-trys commands and contin-ued to flee the scene into the wooded area. The vehicle was impounded and the suspect is still at large. If you have any information on the whereabouts of the subject, call 9-1-1 im-mediately.

Fire!Dear Editor,What if your house was on

fire and no one came? We have a very impressive all-volunteer fire department here in the com-munity. In order to be able to continue our success in taking care of our friends and neigh-bors, we need volunteers.

What does it mean to be a volunteer? It means that if one, volunteers come out every Tues-day night for one to two hours. In order to be safe, we have a training program that we have our volunteers complete.

This will take additional time to complete the course. Once a volunteer is certified, they are then asked to respond to calls when they are available any time of the day or night. In years past, the average number of calls per year have been 60-70 calls. Since October 2014 we have recorded 72 dispatches.

The dispatches range from burning structures, chimney fires, smell of smoke, motor vehicle accidents, assisting other community organizations in-cluding the ambulance corps, and local law enforcement, and sadly, a significant number of false alarms either to defective alarms or unauthorized burning.

While this opportunity isnt just for anyone, it can be very rewarding to save someones home or even life. Anyone be-tween the ages of 18-45 can apply to become a volunteer. A volunteer will need the support of their employer to allow them to take time away if a call comes in during work hours. Sadly, this often means a loss of income for the absence from the job to our volunteers.

We do not compensate our volunteers. There are several things that we do provide volun-teers at no cost: 24-7 Accidental Death and/or Dismemberment insurance policy; Coverage in the case of accident while vol-unteering which includes time

lost from a volunteers wages; Spouses/Orphans insurance in the unlikely event a firefighter dies while actively respond-ing to an event; and contribu-tions toward a pension. In our community we have quite a few retired volunteers that are receiving up to $300/month in pension payments.

Its been my pleasure to sup-port the Forks/Beaver Fire De-partment (Clallam Co. Fire Protection District #1) for over 20 years. Our department has accomplished a lot through the heroics of our volunteers. An un-told number of structures have been saved both the burning ones and sometimes adjacent buildings.

Weve come a long way from Benjamin Franklins first volun-teer fire department which was a bucket brigade. Here in Forks we have records of a volunteer fire department since 1939! In the West End we have sev-eral departments: Forks/Beaver, Quillayute, LaPush and Clallam Bay. All departments are in need

of volunteers.While we cant all serve as

volunteer firefighters, its my hope that we can strengthen our department and find some more volunteers to meet our commu-nitys needs. If you or someone you know may be interested in volunteering in the Forks/Beaver area, please contact Chief Bill Paul by calling 374-5561 (please leave a message he too is a volunteer and may be at work when you call). Our department is in critical need of volunteers available during business hours (Mondays-Fridays).

Id like to thank all those who have and/or are currently volun-teering. Our community is better because of your commitment to protect our lives and property. Thank You!!

Let the whales be an attraction instead of an extraction

Dear Editor,Makah Whaling Tradition Lets see: 1. Check the marine radio

weather report.2. Check your cellphone.3. Grab your 50-caliber rifle

and remember your harpoon for fun.

4. Have your canoe towed with motor boat and lots of escorts for safety.

5. Be sure to have your life jackets and oh yes, dont forget your wetsuits.

I have great respect for your ancestors, especially the hunter who was brave enough to dive into the ocean and sew the mouth

of the whale shut so he could not sink. He might be laughing at you but I believe he is dishon-ored and sad that you will kill so easily what you dont need.

So why not be wise like the great Chief Dan George and honor the whales left by offer-ing tourist adventures to see the whales up close?

Each year the monetary value to the Makah will be 10 times greater by sharing your unique ancestral relationship. A sug-gestion would be to establish an adventure program with your renowned museum.

Walk the path of a true war-rior spirit and quit following the white mans modern machine weakness.

Setting the record straight on Senior Safe Night

Dear Editor:This letter is in response to

Patsy Browns letter to the edi-tor. First Id like to thank Patsy for supporting the Girl Scouts and purchasing cookies. I have participated in more fundraisers over the years in Forks than I can count and the support from the community is very much appreciated.

After all, its about raising our children to be strong, confident, independent adults, as they will someday be taking over where we leave off. Congratulations

to the gentleman who couldnt eat cookies but stated he never missed a chance to give money to pretty girls and made his donation even though Patsy felt the message portrayed in his comment worried her.

I did the same yesterday in Sequim to the young ladies selling me cookies. I donated the cookies to the troops but took the time to thank the girls and acknowledge them and how pretty they were.

They are proud of their special Girl Scout uniforms; they work hard, learn values and are proud of what they do. Part of being confident is to feel good about yourself and having someone acknowledge that is very encour-aging to a young person who may have never felt they were good enough or pretty enough or handsome enough.

She refuses to contribute to the $70,000 Senior Party Safe Night because it appears to her that the community tolerates il-legal substance use every night of the year except graduation night?

The $70,000 that you are refer-ring to is what the kids raise at the Scholarship Auction. They have adults who volunteer and assist with the auction and guid-ance but it is up to the kids to get the donations to be auctioned and the kids run the auction.

You have been forced to stare at my mug up there 125 times. I apologize for that, but to celebrate my 125th column, were going to walk down memory lane. I took a poll to decide the top 10 quotes of all time. Those polled (just myself) decided that these were the best ones. Enjoy!

1. Despite what people will tell you, squirrels do not taste like chicken. In fact nothing tastes like chicken with the excep-tion of chicken.

2. Recapping this scene for anyone who fell asleep; car parked in the middle of the highway, all parties outside vehicle leisurely acting as if they were parked in a perfectly fine parking spot, no emergency lights ac-

tivated, and me wondering, WHERE ELSE IS IT OKAY TO DO THIS??????????

3. I imagine Not my problem is the motto of grandparents everywhere. I know for a fact that my dad says this to himself as he gives my 2-year-old a Tootsie Roll that is three times bigger than she is.

4. To get the ideas flowing, I said to myself, Christy, what would bring people to Forks? Three days later, I still had nothing.

5. I recently got asked how to tell the difference between a moose and an elk. Im not saying this was a stupid ques-tion, but the person asked how to tell the difference between a moose and an elk.

6. We all have that one friend who is smart but dumb at the same time. If you dont have that friend, you might be that friend. Rest assured, you are in good company. Im pretty certain that I am that friend.

7. Three years of Spanish in high school and I successfully (only) took away that sol translates to sun and verde trans-lates to green. These two words will no doubt come in handy if I should ever venture to a Spanish-speaking country. A person can never go wrong knowing how to say green sun.

8. Most people just tell me to keep my day job. The joke is on these people because this IS my day job.

9. Due to Twilight, Forks has received an unfair reputation of never having any sun. To make matters worse, Forks never has any sun.

10. By inhumanely interrogated, I mean questioned by anyone with a badge, including mall security.

Heres to hoping that Christi lets me write 125 more! Lastly, if you happen to know what the traditional 125th anniversary gift is, please e-mail me at christyrasmussen@yahoo.com so that I may purchase it for myself.

Secondly, the Senior Safe Night party is a party the parents work on for a good 10 months with fundraising, con-cessions, Senior Parent Caf, selling wood, and its all to give our kids a fun, safe night before they head off to school, military, work or whatever they choose.

We have not even come close to the amount raised for the auction as you state.

The parents who have spent their time organizing and

preparing for the big night with the entertainment, food and photographers are there serving food, giving out prizes and at the end of the night (4 a.m.) each graduate is given gifts that help to get them setup for their future.

As a past community mem-ber, parent and volunteer I take great offense to your letter. We dont tolerate illegal substance use every night of the year, except graduation as you state. Maybe you have not partici-pated in the events?

Thank you to all of the com-munity of Forks for all of your support over the years. It has always been appreciated.

The event now known as the Quillayute Valley Scholarship Auction turns 51 this year. At its inception it was known as the Quillayute Valley Scholarship Fund. It began with a group of Forks residents looking for a way to help Forks High School graduates achieve higher educa-tional goals.

The original orga-nizers felt that due to the remoteness of the community the cost of college or trade school education was not always within reach for many Forks families. So a group of local business people and educators wanted to find a way to help, and in a way give back for the success and achievements they had experi-enced living in the West End.

In February 1964, the first meeting of the Quillayute Val-ley Scholarship Fund Corpo-ration and various contract logging operators was held at the Vagabond cafe to begin the drive among local industries for scholarship funds. Robert Rosmond, chairman for indus-trial contacts, conducted the meeting. It was decided that any young person with promise and need would get a scholarship; the immediate goal was $1,000. The kick-off dinner was at the Russ Thomas home.

In 1966, a Forks Style Ban-quet was held at the Congrega-tional Church featuring steel-head, elk, Swedish meatballs

The amazing gift The QVSAand Swiss steak; admission was by donation at the door, by this time the organization had raised a total of $6,300 and awarded 39 scholarships.

In 1968, the scholarship fund got a boost from radio. Radio station owner Gordon Otos held an impromptu auction on the local radio station, KVAC, selling off co-owner Bruce Elliotts birthday gifts on the air. As the gifts ran out locals started donating

more items and more people started bidding. It went on for several days and the only reason they stopped was because they got tired.

Over the years the dinners were phased out and the radio format took over. By 1980, the event had outgrown the radio station and Northwestern Na-tional Bank offered up its lobby as a place to hold the auction and still broadcast it live over the radio.

Eventually the event outgrew Northwestern Bank and was moved to the Bank of America building. In 1987, the Olympic Correction Center inmates be-gan creating items for the auc-tion. Over the years those items have contributed thousands of dollars to the fund.

In the mid-1990s the local cable company put the event on the local advertising channel 19. The annual two-day event began taking in $20,000, then

$30,000, then in 1998 a new record for two days of $58,000.

In 2008, the auction took in over $71,000 and a basket donated by Muriel Huggins brought in $3,100.

After many successful years in the Bank of America building, the event was moved in 2012 to the Forks High School Com-mons, although not directly affiliated with the school the event is now hosted by FHS, with the Senior Parents provid-ing concessions for hungry bid-ders, with those proceeds going to Senior Safe Night.

Thanks to the original board members Robert Rosmond, Harvey King, Russ Thomas, Larry Wagg, A. Nordman, Mrs. Herman Waters and Mrs. George Thompson, since its inception the QVSA has raised over $1 million to assist Forks grads with scholarships.

Last years auction beat the all time record with $77,000 plus taken in over the two-day event. The QVSA is an event that is undefinable and speaks to the amazing heart of the commu-nity we live in! See you at the auction!

FIFTH CASE OF MEASLES IN CLALLAM COUNTY CONFIRMED

Laboratory testing has con-firmed a fifth case of measles in Clallam County this year. The case is an adult relative of two earlier cases who was thought to be immune to measles. This latest case was exposed to one of the earlier cases during their infectious period.

A total of five cases of measles have been confirmed in Clallam County since February. The first four cases occurred among indi-viduals who were not vaccinated against measles.

The fifth and newest case had received one dose of measles

vaccine in the 1970s. The vac-cine that was in use at the time had a different formulation from the current vaccine and was less effective. The latest case had onset of rash on March 4. No people susceptible to measles had contact with this newest case during his infectious period. Nonetheless, Clallam County Health and Human Services staff remains vigilant for additional cases in the community.

RAZOR CLAM DIGS APPROVED

State shellfish managers have approved a series of razor clam digs that started March 16 on evening tides, then switches to

morning tides Saturday March 21 for four more days of dig-ging.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildwlife approved the digs after marine toxin tests showed the clams are safe to eat.

As spring approaches, the best low tides start occurring in the morning rather than evening, said Dan Ayres, WDFW coastal shellfish manager. The switch from evening to morning digs reflects that seasonal cycle.

We are happy to be able to provide this opener to coincide with the annual Ocean Shores Razor Clam Festival, Ayres said. The split schedule also provides an opportunity for back-to-back digs the evening of Friday, March 20, and the morning of Saturday, March 21.

All diggers age 15 or older must have an applicable fishing license to harvest razor clams on any beach. Licenses, ranging from a three-day razor clam li-cense to an annual combination fishing license, are available on WDFWs website at https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov and from license vendors around the state.

This is the last chance for diggers to use their 2014-2015 fishing licenses, which expire March 31, Ayres said. Beginning April 1, a 2015-2016 fishing license will be required. A list of proposed upcoming digs is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Under state law, diggers are required to keep the first 15 clams they dig. Each diggers clams must be kept in a separate

container.The dig is scheduled for the

This free 3-hour class provides homeowners an overview of the what, why and how of safely inspecting your septic system and includes an instructional video, a brief demonstration and a short exam. Not all sep-tic systems are eligible for homeowner inspection and systems located in the Marine Recovery Area (between Bagley Creek watershed and east to the county boundary) must first be inspected by a licensed septic inspector.

Septic inspections are re-quired by state law: gravity septic systems inspected every 3 years; all other systems in-spected annually. Remember: Pumping is not the same as an inspection.

The Septics 201 class will be held at Dungeness River Audu-bon Center at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 West Hendrickson Road, Sequim, from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, April 22.
