October is Pastor Appreciation MonthDear Editor, A time to recognize the importance of clergy around America,

maybe the world.I recently have discovered that missionaries are pastors. I

know pastors are parents. This is the month to acknowledge and be grateful for any

and every pastor who has ever helped you in any way. You can write a note of appreciation or make a phone call if appropriate. Perhaps you could attend a church service and talk face to face with the pastor.

Make sure it is to appreciate and be thankful, not to accuse. Pastors get enough of that all year.

People get mad at their god and blame pastors and/or Chris-tians. October is a month to celebrate the hope in us caused by men and women of faith.

Trust me on this one. Bad news travels fast on Facebook. Let us make face time, a time to appreciate one another, young or old, Mom or Dad, all appreciate encouragement, even pastors and their spouses.

2nd Annual

Forks Community Hospital candidates for its board of commissioners, Don Lawley and Patty Birch, spoke at the weekly meeting of West End Business and Professional Association on Sept. 30 at the DNR Conference Room.

Each started with an opening statement.

DON LAWLEYLawley told the group he is

a two-term commissioner run-ning for a third term. He said there is a lot of work to do and a lot of change coming in the future. “Medicaid is changing, a lot of things are changing, it is not like the old days,” Lawley said.

He said that since he has been on the board he has seen the Clallam Bay/Sekiu area receive enhanced services, also Dr. Tristan McGovern, ortho-pedic surgeon, is now going to the Clallam Bay Clinic. “It is allowing patients from as far as Neah Bay to be seen closer to their home.”

PATTY BIRCHBirch is a graduate of a nurs-

ing program and a 25-year veteran of the Air Force. She spent two years in Viet Nam and worked at Forks Commu-

nity Hospital for 15 years. She said she has seen disturbing things taking place at FCH. “Forks was the best place to work, all departments func-tioned well.”

”There are problems at the Bogachiel Clinic, it is not a smooth, functioning clinic, now it is low on providers.”

Birch said, “The town stepped up and that is what brought about the recent change of administration, I commend the board.” Birch then said she would not be actively campaigning in light of the recent actions the board made in terminating CEO David Selman.

”I want to see the hospital saved.”

QUESTIONS FOLLOWED FROM THE GROUP

What is the outlook for new providers?

Lawley — “We are looking at a couple of residents, looking at the short and long term. Also looking at mid-levels, we are committed to that. Bogachiel is a gem that needs further polishing.”

Birch — “We need to find a manager for the Bogachiel Clinic that actually lives here. The policy has been to use a

FCH Hospital board candidates face off at West

End Business meeting

recruiting agency, not the best people have been at recruiting agencies.”

A question was asked re-garding the citizens advisory committee and its demise. Lawley said that the commit-tee decided to disband despite the rumors that have circulated it was the group’s idea to step down, leaving the door open to return if needed.

Discussion also was made as to whether the board should be increased from three to five members. Lawley said he

would be for that idea and the community needs to let the other board members aware of this if they want the change.

A question was asked regard-ing how the selection was made for Selman. Lawley said the board talked with the hospital where he previ-ously worked. He said it soon became evident that Selman was showing character that was not going on the path the board wanted. He said in the future he would like to see more focus on a candidate from

Washington. He pointed out Tim Cournyer was a good ex-ample of a good fit for Forks. Cournyer previously worked in Morton, a similar community to Forks.

Birch responded that she also has found Cournyer has made a good impression. “He answers questions, I suggest we leave him where his is, as acting CEO and CFO, and let things at the hospital stabilize.”

Several employees of the hospital also attended the meeting. The question was raised regarding the status of Commissioner Gerry Lane and if he actually lives in Forks. At the most recent hospital board meeting Lane has attended via the phone.

It was also reported by Birch that Chief of Nursing Laura Kripinski, who had resigned her position, had been re-hired.

Forks Community Hospital board members serve six-year terms and are at large posi-tions.

Monty Burt questions Birch after the meeting.

COmmentary By Christy Rasmussen-Ford

I am super ungood (not a real word) at guessing ages. Therefore, when I serve adult beverages, I card everyone … just to be on the safe side. It keeps me on the safe side of the law anyway. Safe from angry customers? Now, that’s another

story. I carded an older man once, assum-ing that he would be flattered by this act. I think he was very unflattered (also not a real word) judging by his response of, “I didn’t live this old to be made into a joke by you!” Also, I don’t think he realized that I actually get paid to make everyone into a joke, not just him.

That older man was not alone though. There are a whole lot of people who get irritated when they have to show their ID

for something. My husband, for example, has been staging a one-man protest against AM/PM for carding him a few years ago. He isn’t protesting all AM/PM stores though, just the one on Eighth Street in Port Angeles that carded him. He isn’t hardcore enough to go corporation-wide with it. I think he likes their hot dogs too much.

Unfortunately for my husband, the older man I carded, and all the rest of you who hate to show ID, there are more and more things that require ID these days. DayQuil is now only available to those who can prove they are 21 or older. I know because I got carded for it the other day. Well, I didn’t techni-cally get carded. The cashier just winked and said that she knew that I was good. She should really be more careful about those kinds of things though. I could have been part of an underage DayQuil sales sting operation. After all, I just barely turned 21 … 10 years ago.

Anyway, I was laughing and joking with my co-workers about how there is an age requirement for buying cold medi-cine when another co-worker walked up. “What are you guys talking about?” she asked. “You have to be 21 to buy DayQuil now.” I replied. “I just got carded for it.” A funny look spread across her face. It was a look that I couldn’t quite read at first. “Hmmm … that’s weird. It must be a new thing!” She re-sponded with a huge smirk and a half laugh. “They definitely weren’t carding me when I was buying it every day in high school.”

Now, I will admit that this co-worker did not specifically say that she incorrectly used DayQuil or that she bought it for purposes other than treating symptoms associated with the flu. However, the look on her face and the tone in her voice said all I needed to know. So, the next time you are in Thrifty with a horrible cold, just trying to get in and get out with some DayQuil and you have to dig through 749 used Kleenexes in your purse to find your ID, just know that it is my co-worker’s fault.

Her name is Jen. You’re welcome.

Carded for DayQuil?

By Christi Baron

In the early days of the Forks Forum, the 1930s, it was not unusual to see at least one and sometimes two stories on the front page telling of a logger’s death. Many were single men,

immigrants that lived in the log-ging camps, sometimes their next of kin was unknown. As things changed

from camps to more of a family life for the loggers, the stories told included widows and chil-dren left behind.

The Forks Loggers Memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 25, 1992, in front of a crowd of approximately 500 people. The memorial contains names of about 600 deceased timber workers from the Olym-pic Peninsula and is located next to the Forks Visitor Center across from the airport.

This memorial had its begin-ning in the fall of 1987 when Wayne Queen died in a logging accident. Steve Poppe and Rick Butner had the idea to establish a Loggers Memorial. Funds were raised, but the project was set aside because the funds raised were not adequate to pay for the project they wanted to do.

In February 1991, a new committee was formed and work began to fall into place at last. Jan Westerlund was the chairman and Evelyn Bryson, June Cassell, Martha Paul and Lowell McQuoid were on the committee. As years went by, Evelyn Bryson was the chair-man, with June Cassell and Martha Paul assisting. Both Evelyn’s and June’s husbands were loggers during part of their lives. Floyd Bryson and Ed Cassell helped Evelyn and June maintain the gardens. Dennis and Margaret Chastain carved out a 12-foot-tall statue of western red cedar for the memorial.

The Loggers Memorial was built entirely with volunteer money, labor and materials.

In 1994, the first “Loggers

Celebrating Echoes of Axes

Memorial” book was released. It not only contained names of people that died working in the timber industry but also those who had passed on that had dedicated their lives to working in the woods.

Evelyn Bryson and June Cassell retired in 2010 after 20 years of service to the commit-tee. Evelyn and Floyd Bryson have both since died and just recently the community lost June Cassell as well.

Since 1994, sadly more fine people have lost their lives working in the timber indus-try and many more names of deceased timber workers have been collected and this Hickory Shirt Days the second edition of the “Loggers Memorial” book will make its debut.

It was about a year ago that a new committee started work on the second edition. The chairman of the project has been Jo Marie Dahlgren Miller with assistance by Martha Paul. Vern Hestand and Joyce Pagac of Olympic Graphic arts have worked to put the book together.

Hestand’s painting of Todd Horton will grace the cover. Horton is truly the face of what a tragedy it is when our community loses a person to a logging accident. Horton was 47 years old when he was killed. He was a husband, a father, a brother, an uncle and a son, and an involved commu-

COMMUNITY, from page 5

The U.S. Navy, in cooperation with the U.S. Coast Guard and National Marine Fisheries Service, has prepared a Final EIS/OEIS to conclude evaluation of potential environmental impacts from military readiness training and testing activities conducted primarily within existing range

complexes, operating areas and testing ranges of the Northwest Training and Testing (NWTT) Study Area.

Notice of Availability of the Northwest Training and Testing Final Environmental Impact Statement/

Overseas Environmental Impact Statement (EIS/OEIS)

The Final EIS/OEIS will be available to the public for 30 days beginning Oct. 2, 2015. Access the Final EIS/OEIS online at www.NWTTEIS.com or view a copy at one of 21 community

libraries in the affected coastal counties. For More Information

Visit the project website at www.NWTTEIS.com or contact: Naval Facilities Engineering Command Northwest

Attention: Ms. Kimberly Kler – NWTT EIS/OEIS Project Manager 1101 Tautog Circle, Suite 203 Silverdale, WA 98315-1101

Public Involvement The completion of the Final EIS/OEIS follows years of research, analysis and

public involvement. The Navy held nine public scoping meetings in March 2012, eight public meetings in February/March 2014 for the Draft EIS/OEIS and

four public meetings in January 2015 for the Supplement to the NWTT Draft EIS/OEIS. Meetings took place in Washington, Northern

California, Oregon and Alaska. The Final EIS/OEIS includes Navy responses to the public comments received

during the Draft and Supplement review periods. Regulations provide for a 30-day wait period after the Final EIS/OEIS is published before the Navy may take action.

Proposed Action The Proposed Action is to conduct training and testing activities within the NWTT Study Area, to include the use of active sonar, acoustic sources and explosives, as well as pierside sonar maintenance and testing. While training and testing, the Navy follows strict guidelines

and employs measures to reduce effects on marine species. The purpose of the Proposed Action is to ensure that the Navy accomplishes its mission to maintain, train and equip combat-ready naval forces

capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas. The Final EIS/OEIS also supports the renewal of federal regulatory permits and authorizations for current training and testing activities and future activities requiring environmental analysis.

Septic inspections are re-quired by state law. Gravity septic systems inspected every three years; all other systems inspected annually. Remem-ber: Pumping is not the same as an inspection.

The Septics 201 class will be held at the Dungeness River Audubon Center at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 West Hen-drickson Road, Sequim, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20.

How much more will I pay?The request is for an increase of 34¢ per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

This equates to $5.67 a month, or $68 per year on a $200,000 home. If the levy lid lift is approved, the total tax rate would be 75¢ per $1,000 of assessed property value.

FACTS ABOUTCLALLAM COUNTY FIRE PROTECTION

DISTRICT #1’S LID LIFTHow will the funds be used? The increased funds will be used to maintain current service levels as well as add a full time paid position, department chief. Over the years, inflation has eroded the dis-trict’s buying power while inflationary pressures have increased basic operating costs. In addition, new equipment is very expensive. Today it costs in excess of $5,000 to equip a single firefighter and the replacement of a 1977 fire truck was over $500,000.

VOTE YES ❑✔on November 3, 2015

Paid for by Vote Yes on Clallam County Fire Protection District #1 Levy Lid Li Committee

Why a paid department chief? The funds from this proposition will provide a person to provide day to day management and leadership

to the department. As well as administrative duties, budget management, supervision and training of volunteers, performing routine maintenance, ensuring various certifications are current, public outreach

and the recruitment of firefighters. Last, but certainly not least, the responding to calls during the daytime hours when we are most vulnerable to the unavailability of volunteers to respond. Without a full-time

person available to provide these functions, the workload has proven to be over-burdening with much of it simply not done.

Jack Merrick was born in Priest River, Idaho, in 1927. His parents were farmers and he grew up with one brother, Donald, who was three years younger. The Merrick family later moved to Ione, where Jack went to school all 12 grades.

In 1945, Jack joined the Army and he admits it was due to his smart mouth that he end-ed up in the Aleutian Islands. “I was called to battalion head-quarters and asked if I would like to work in my home state for the Forest Service. I asked if it was civilian pay or army pay, and was told it was army pay.” Jack made a disparaging remark regarding the army pay and the next thing you know he was in Alaska “testing cold weather gear.” Jack said he never saw any Japanese and no shots were fired. He left the Army in 1947 and returned to Ione.

He worked as a hard rock miner, mining for lead and

zinc, and then he got an op-portunity to come to Forks to work.

But first he met his wife Lee.Jack and some friends

decided to head to the coast and ended up in Salem, Ore. It was VJ Day and Jack and his buddies could not find a room. “We walked up and down the beach and ended up in a roller skating rink. There we met six gals. We knew where they were staying, so they happened to leave their car unlocked and we slept in their car. The next day they fed us breakfast.” One of those gals was Lee.

Jack said Lee has a different story about that meeting …

Angeles, no ambulance we just drove, and Dr. Schuler and Doc Duncan fixed me up.”

It was in 1958 that Jack heard his freezer make a clicking noise. He called the local re-pairman at the time who fixed it and “I got charged an arm and a leg,” Jack said.

So for two years Jack did home study to become an appliance repairman. That became his second career.

He worked for Russ Vedder and many local restaurants and grocery stores on their refrig-

eration needs, as well as all appliances to both residential and business customers.

In 1980-1981 things got slow for work in Forks so Jack headed to Mount St. Helens, where he busheled windfalls.

He eventually retired from busheling and was well known as the local appliance repair-man for many years.

Today Jack and Lee still live in their home on Bogachiel Way in Forks.

Congratulations Jack, Pioneer Logger 2015!

In 1952, Jack and Lee got an opportunity to come to Forks and they have been here ever since.

Jack’s first job was cutting standing timber on the south fork of the Hoh River. It was hard to find housing in Forks in 1952 and Jack said he and Lee set up housekeeping in some former wartime hous-ing called the “sheep sheds.” They were located near Maple Avenue and they were awful, according to Jack.

“What a dump, they had a flat roof; we lived there for a year and then bought our house on Bogachiel Way.”

Jack said he worked for every contractor in town as a busheler and spent 30 years at it. “I like busheling, nobody looking down your neck, it was a different challenge everyday.”

Jack’s career was mostly accident free. His only injury was when one day he was walking down a log and the bark slipped, “I grabbed a small tree as I fell and the next thing I knew it felt like worms on my arm, my tendon had torn away from the bone and was up by my shoulder.”

Church donates school suppliesYou have heard the saying, “It is more blessed to give than to re-

ceive.” This is what the Rev. Pamela Hunter and the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church have modeled in their efforts to support and bless the community. Every year they raise an abundance of school sup-plies to meet the needs of families that otherwise wouldn’t be able to obtain them. The binders, paper, notebooks, pencils, pens and more do help the students come to school prepared and ready to learn, but the example of thinking and caring for others is a message that this community can learn and grow from. It is a sign of love, compassion and generosity that brings hope to area youth. Pictured are Michael Aceves, the Rev. Pam Hunter and Tina Gonzales. Submitted photo

What is the well-kept secret at the Bogachiel Clinic? It is the Orthopedic Surgery Program offered by the clinic and Forks Community Hospital.

The orthopedic team is headed by Dr. Tristan McGovern. He is assisted by Linda Campbell, Kelsey Blattner and Jonas Mer-rill, who is in in Clallam Bay. Dr. McGovern would like West End residents to know that these services go all the way from Forks to Neah Bay. The Clallam Bay Clinic has greatly expand-ed its service and recently has re-established x-ray services.

Forks Community Hospital now has three surgery days and can add a fourth day if needed. Dr. McGovern said,” We have the trained staff to do this and are adding more staff. We can of-fer knee, hip and shoulder joint replacement surgery right here in Forks.”

“We also do ACL and rotator cuff surgeries.”Dr. Mc Govern said, “We recently treated a tourist from Santa

Fe that fell in Olympic National Park and we were able to help with that. We are not set up for trauma but for elective surger-ies, we can help.”

They also can help with L&I injuries and the paperwork that goes along with that. “We have the office staff to help patients.” McGovern said.

Many producers of alternative energy get by without batter-ies. In Washington state, Public Utility Districts cooperate with home owners so that the output of custom-ers producing alterna-tive energy is played directly into the grid.

So a home owner can put up maybe 10 to 30 panels to amount to, say, 3 kilowatts in full illumination. The inverter synchronizes the cycles per second and meters the sale of power back to the PUD. No batteries are required for this scheme and it is as green as you can get by not requiring hugely polluting, toxic spewing storage batteries. To those purveyors of alternative energy I tip my hat, but my remarks are more di-rected to those that feel hillbilly in their bones.

The thrill of having lights and creature comforts while the rest of the world lumbers in dark-ness along with other egocentric reasons, such as personal sur-vival, may require batteries...or a generator running a lot. The new-truck, so-called “camper package” are factory installed systems including an extra deep cycle battery.

Accessories operate off of a cir-cuit that is isolated from the start-ing circuit battery with a rectifier. Hillbilly does not need diagrams or how to books to go straight to the concept if one battery can be charged for RV accessories, why not five more batteries to power source such as a pickup truck? A false bottom in a pickup bed can store considerable batteries to which the hillbilly home can be attached by heavy duty 240 volt type plugs or, better heavy

Batteries - Can’t live with them, can’t live without them.

duty direct current connectors, with large Frankenstein switches on the wall.

This kind of hillbilly wiring requires mondo jumper cables running from the car/truck’s extra batteries and hillbilly en-

gineering requires that polarities are made idiot proof. As one hillbilly to another, it’s worth harvesting electricity off your car alternator if you are spending an hour in your car, to and from your electrified home in the wilderness.

And for hillbilly charm, there is always my suggestion to convert a lawn mower to battery charger by replacing the blades with a pulley wheel for the alternator. If you get enough solar panels on your roof or hydro power, you can run the hillbilly electricity back at your yuppie Volt, or other all electric vehicle.

A usual mistake is to get a household generator with a large enough output to handle the biggest electrical load the home owner requires (everything turned on at once.) — which is what the salesman said to buy. That means that you will be running a huge power plant to charge cell phones, a few lights and maybe a TV. Those of us that regret the sound intrusion, will suffer the slings and arrows incurred by battery systems.

When we run generators, we hope for short run times with as much power as the generator can produce dumping into the batter-ies. Obviously, in times of civil defense, the price of gas is dear and short run times are a huge advantage.

As expensive as plumbing parts seem, the price of electrical parts can be more shocking. So I have used copper pipe for jumpers and battery connections.

Usually there is a p.v.c. or poly pipe the next diameter up which can be used for insulation.

Flatten out the ends coming out of the insulation in a vice and drill out to make dandy hillbilly connections.

Don’t forget to keep all elec-trical connections clean and set with electrical grease.

At some point near or by the batteries you will assign any se-ries circuit instrumentation such as ammeters.

American made Trimetric me-ters and other shunt based in-

strumentation allows the meter to be installed remotely from battery bank with a finer wire run. Chinese made, ground series connect ammeters, that tell you everything you need to know such as voltage, amp hour, kilo-watt hours are available from Lemmonhobby on Amazon at a fraction the cost of the American made Trimetrics. Some Chinese idioms are helpful for any war-ranty issues.

“Solly, Cholly,” is spoken here. With Tri-Metrics you call up the number on their instruction manual

and talk with the guy who built the meter. Sometimes more money spent is less money wasted. But mostly I use Chinese meters.

One more word of caution about avoiding any kind of mis-connected polarities. If you cre-ate a dead short with a wrench, the tool will melt in your hands as it creates Forth of July caliber fireworks in your battery room. It’s no good designing a bat-tery room bunker to protect the house from an explosion if it’s you standing in the battery room causing the ignition.

By Jane HielmanSunsets West Co-op

Di is an adventurer. She lives here in Clallam Bay, but this ad-venture was different!

“It’s a good little boat,” said Di. “It has a 10-horse Honda motor, it’s a put-put—a little boat and it is blue!”

“We left at 5 a.m. The other boats were roaring past us leav-ing a wake! That is a really interesting feeling! It was a big wake. Leaving us rockin’ and a rollin’. With only two seats, two folk and little height above the water; it was interesting!

Where will the fish flop? was my question both to myself and to my buddy. I already knew I had a lot of questions that would soon be unanswered! Like how does a person use the bathroom? What to do if you want to stand up? Practical questions.

At last I agreed with myself about these basic fears — I’m doing good, I assured myself. I haven’t been on the ocean since I went commercial halibut fishing in Seward, Alaska, when I was a teenager, about 35 years ago, in a different state, my home way back then, I mused to myself.

This is different, I was told it would be good, flat and calm, but … by the time we got out there the swell was Not Swell! Our little blue boat was tiny! I looked to the horizon—but it didn’t help because most of the time I couldn’t see it! The swell was blocking my view of security!

My buddy was loving it all but I knew I was unstable and looking deeply into my sense of safety. Putting the line out was a trip, the silver plaque heavy, it looks like a triangle, and it helps to cut loose — I’m still not a fish expert even though I have tried, this is way more complicated than I had expected. I asked whether we were trolling and the answer was Yes, but who’s to know? All I knew was we were looking for silvers and then boy did we land some!

In the little boat with those swells, high as me, we were up, we were down and then the pole went crazy. A hatchery silver! Yay! The silver spoon trick worked; the fish came in and we knew we were 85 feet down in the water, another keeper, two pinks and two silvers in 30-40 minutes plus others. That meant we could return to shore. We used a hoochy and other baits.

I had a cigarette and coffee but no time to light up or swig down! Constant swells, down swells, up swells, bites and then catches. What a thrill! ‘Never stand up and make sure to keep your balance,’ I repeated to myself. Up swell, down swell, another fish, boom, boom they hit the little floor of the little blue boat. My spoon bait did way better than the hoochy, a little green octopus-like thing!

“Pee-not! Coffee-not! Cigarette not! Swell yes! Excitement yes! The little blue boat just kept on floating; it was a really fun, fun, fun trip!

P.S. I didn’t throw up! I didn’t freak! I just had fun. What an adventure!

Normally! Meaning I am a land lubber, back country horse-woman who tracks and finds lost people on horseback in Alaska back country, I realized that the water here is nothing to mess with! Especially in the little blue boat that floats!

Focusing on the positive I found out I like her, I can trust her and the ups and down are SWELL! It is a bit like life if you release to the disruptions and go with the flow you end up a lot better off and more experienced in life! I can see that now!

In Alaska, I was hired on by Fish and Fur, a government agency for wildlife protection, I was hired to track and kill a grizzly bear, ‘Griz’ by name and well known to the locals who inhabited that area. He was very old and had lost his teeth. They really wanted to find out how old, he was; he was hungry as he could no longer fend for himself and instead had taken to invad-ing cabins and family homes for food. The older they are the smarter they are, same as us! He was causing a lot of trouble.

My stepdad and me, and some of the other folk around Sheet Mount loaded up with stock and goods for the long trek into the homeland of Griz. We took an old guide with us who knew the area well.

He was from a family of many generations of guiding folk. We

The Little Blue Boat that Floats meets ‘Grizz’

took horses and mules and had to cross a raging river which is always different and unknown. We did this successfully and were happy with the results but didn’t expect what was to come next! We were all raised out there, we knew how to live and travel, we were across the river and our ani-mals and our packs were safe. We were relying on Mark our guide to track, until we got a particular area where I would take over, so here we go! The next morning we got up ready to head on into the challenge. When we tried to rouse Mark we found he was as drunk as a skunk! Sobering him up slowly was a trip, we wet him down, we walked him in circles, he threw up and so it went. We couldn’t move on until he was ready, not what we expected from a well seasoned tracker on a government mission! At last we got him moving and into the rough country! A helicopter whirled overhead, annoying Mark instantly, maybe it was the hangover? He put his arms in the air and gave the wrong signal to the pilot who responded by loud hailing us to dismount, hit the ground and stay there! The loud hailer asked who we were and I answered that we were the good,

the bad and the ugly. That started an argument and so the story got tangled. The pilot got on the radio and found out who we were. He was reprimanded for interfering with the Fish and Fur Project!”

We picked up the tracks on the Grizzly, he was old. Many miles on we followed him, he was in bad shape! He must have been 30 years old. Very old for a Griz. We had to kill him and take him back for research purposes! They found it was the oldest bear they had every seen. I love cutting-edge adventure, the little blue boat that floats brought it all back!

This journey reminded me to take my own authority when I feel threatened by lack of safety. If I take my own authority then I am always safe and no regrets!

Di and husband Pat own and op-erate The Gut Hut currently run-ning from Olson’s (now Mason Family owned) Resort in Sekiu. They filet and pack fish caught by fishermen and their families who come here sport fishing.

Chatting Around the Campfire

Part 1:

So This is Elk Hunting

By Duane Miles

The story you are about to read is true, only the names, location and most of the details have been changed to avoid re-vealing hunting secrets and the embarrassment of those involved. This admission, it could be added, might be said to therefore nestle this story alongside many modern media reality accounts.

Be advised, however, don’t assume that you just might have inside information as to the identity of any of the

characters listed herein, for this is not a first-hand account. This story now begins as you imag-ine fair weather and a gentle

breeze caressing your face.

Amidst the chatter-ing voices of distant crows blending with the nearby chirps of various songbirds, a pre-hunt roving archer now added his own harmonious cheerful expression

to this forest melody. For as Howard Hill II now returned to his vehicle, he was elated to have just glimpsed a nice-sized 5-point legal bull elk, along with a small harem of cows. To

After looking for elk in the cranberry bog alongside Highway 101 at milepost 180 for over 40 years, I was finally rewarded for this diligence early this year on the morning of Feb. 20, 2015.

heighten his enthusiasm even more about this encounter, he was almost positive this sight-ing had been accomplished without his presence being detected.

His next step was to sneak to that sighting location — posi-tion X — early the following morning with the hope that this bull would still be there. This time, though, he would be packing along a modern com-pound bow (not a long bow as his so-called name-sake would

have done). As our hunter’s head rested

on his pillow that night, bull elk pranced in every direction around him throughout those long hours of darkness. Oh, that this would be the case when daylight finally arrived, he dreamed.

Likewise, he dreamed that such would be the case for his hunting partner, Glenn St. Charles, who would approach position X from the opposite direction some distance up-stream.

After all this dreaming, our hunter awoke to the sound of his alarm clock at 4 a.m. Now quite rested, he ate a hasty breakfast as he briefly rehashed the day’s plan with his hunt-ing partner. This done, they were now ready to apply an old logging saying to the situation as one of them said, “Let’s fly at it!”

To be continued …

May light for your feet guide you on the path of life until we meet again.

The annual West End busi-ness and Professional Associ-ation Hickory Shirt/Heritage Day’s celebration will take place Oct. 7-11.

The hickory shirt has long been a staple in the logger’s wardrobe but how did it hap-pen?

From the early 1940s until the mid-1980s the Lee Company was the industry standard for the hickory shirt, button front or zip. It also is called the railroad shirt and the fabric is known as hickory fabric, a relative of denim and

as durable as hickory wood. One could say this is the shirt that built this country.

It was a 100 percent cotton, tough, soft, classic, all around kind of shirt. It blocked the wind; it easily vented with the buttons; it got sweaty if you did and then it cooled you as the sweat evaporated.

The Lee Company eventu-ally discontinued its hickory shirts and logger jeans.

These days Ben Davis and Carhartt make hickory shirts. Inmates in Pendleton, Ore., may be making the last Amer-ican-made hickory shirts. They are 100 percent cotton

and are $33.99 and they can be ordered on line.

A hickory shirt will cost around $38, which in the normal world would mean a retail price of about $120, and no working guy is going to spend that on a shirt that used to cost him $25 or even $20. The cost of making in Amer-ica is why many companies have gone off-shore, as they call it.

The life expectancy of a

The Story of the Hickory Shirt

This year Forks High School will be bringing to the forefront “Students of Character.” Each month a new character trait will be represented. The month of September we were looking for students who have “Made a fresh start.”

The names of the students are:Bottom left to right Adriana Torres, Guadalupe Silva, Julia Guzman, Diego Orozco. Middle row

hickory shirt? Hard to say, a new hickory shirt on

the crew bus may not look new long. It’s

a shirt you won’t throw out or wear out. It will outlast any other shirts in your closet, so the cost per wear-ing is low. So, maybe they are really worth $120?

When the Lee Company discontin-

ued its hickory shirt it also discontinued its logger pant

“Boss of the Road” 77’s, but amazingly I found where they went. The Japanese have them. I found a vintage pair of Lee 77s for 31,500 yen or according to the conver-sion chart $408.87 U.S. Why are we not still making and selling these to the Japanese? Trade … go figure?

If you posses a hickory shirt that is faded, ripped, muddy, greasy, bloody, but not too bloody, then you have really got yourself something there!

But, one would have to ad-mit it is sad that the shirt that built America is now mostly made in China.
