Biodiversity-Related Conventions

1. Convention on Biological Diversity(CBD)

1) On March 23rd, Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) held the "Stakeholders Open Webinar-- Sustainable Agriculture and Food System Transition: Linkage to Post-2020 Global BiodiversityFramework (GBF)", in which Jinfeng ZHOU, Secretary General of CBCGDF, was invited to jointhe Open Discussion session and share insights on sustainable agriculture and food system. Dr.ZHOU mentioned that among all key concepts related to post-2020 GBF, Good Food andhuman-based solution (HbS) should be incoporated, to help us think what is really healthy forpeople and planet.

2) The Green Society International Department has submitted its recommendations to theUN Convention on Biological Diversity for a post-2020 gender action plan outline. First, only byclearly identifying measurable indicators can gender equality become more than a slogan. Second, the report underemphasizes a very important factor: women are often discriminated against by age.Third, the United Nations has set a very good example (for example, many UN agencies andconventions are headed by women), but this is far from the case at the managerial and scientificlevels of countries, especially in some developing countries.

3. Convention on Migratory Species(CMS)

The Angelshark (Squatina squatina) was assessed by the IUCN as Critically Endangered andhas been listed on both the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS) and theMemorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks (Sharks MOU).

The Parties to CMS and Signatories to the Sharks MOU agreed that there should be supportfor improved regional management across the Mediterranean Sea, with Angelsharks also listedunder the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of theMediterranean (Barcelona Convention).

This initial workshop, being organized by the Secretariat and Advisory Committee (AC) ofthe Sharks MOU, aims to provide further information on the current state of knowledge ofAngelsharks and recent work regarding their conservation. It is envisaged to lay the foundation forthe implementation of the

Global Biodiversity Governance

1. Global Genome Biodiversity Network (GGBN)

2021 GGBN-GGI Awards Program:The program provides funding for projects that supportthe discoverability of new genetic collections through the Global Genome Biodiversity Network'sData Portal. The proposal review committee will consider requests for up to 20,000 USD withclearly articulated budget justifications. This year priority consideration will be given to proposalsthat represent institutions and collections1) from the global south,2) from countries with a low or middle-income (based on the latest WESP Economy by per capitaGNI), and3) that strategically address high-level taxonomic gaps in the GGBN Data Portal.

It is mandatory that all data from funded projects are made available online on the GGBNPortal before 1 September 2023. The submission deadline for 2021 proposals is April 30, 2021.

2. Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)

1) GBIF—the Global Biodiversity Information Facility—is an international network anddata infrastructure funded by the world's governments and aimed at providing anyone, anywhere, open access to data about all types of life on Earth. Its data, including the distribution andscientific names of plants, animals, fungi, and micro-organisms, are provided by manyorganizaitons around the world. Currently, only three Chinese organizations are permitted toregister data into GBIF: China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation(CBCGDF), Chinese Academy of Science (CAS), and China National Gene Bank (CNGB).

2) Recently, considering that new snake species -- Bunguras Suzhenae -- was identified inYingjiang, Yunnan, colleagues from the Department of Internation Cooperation of CBCGDFprepared information about this new species so as to register it into GBIF. in addition to the newfriend, CBCGDF also registered information related to sousa chinensis and changnienia amoena, the latter native to China.
