A pergola is oen the ideal soluon to

    complement or complete an outdoor

space. With the right vision and

planning, a pergola can create a

    new living space that combines

    the best of indoors and

    outdoors. Pergolas are an

    excellent way to add

    shade and privacy, or

    create a transional

    area, while preserving

    a sense of openness to

    the sky above. If you

need a way to keep out

    the rain and snow and

create more of a shelter, consider a pavilion, which is

simply a pergola with a closed

    roof. This book discusses some

of the key factors youll need

to consider in choosing a pergola

    or pavilion.

    IntroductIon:LETTER FROM THE FOUNDER

    I founded Forever

    Redwood in 1995 to

    restore forestlands.

It began as a labor of

love. I was a young man

    but not too young. I

    was in the phase when

a man feels the deepneed to discover what he really wants to do

with his lifewhat will be his lifes work and

lasng legacy, what he can trly gie.

I was in love with the wild trees. I had been

spending me at Point Reyes Naonal

    Seashore: meditang, camping, hiking,

    dreaming, searching within and without.

I was reading a lot, edcang myself on

the principles and pracces of svforestry. And, I was talking my friends

ears o with cray ideas abot bying a

piece of land and doing the real thosand-

year forestry work, growing trees for the

millenia. Finally, one of them gave me an

old Apple laptop and told me to stop talking

and write it all downthen get to work!

    The Old-Growth Again Projectwas born

the not-for-prot side of Foreer Redwood.

Or mission remains to make nae forests

fll of majesc trees once again. We se

an integral approach to forestry based on

the insight that by logging only a very small

amount of the wood produced by the land,

we can replant at a rate that is not only

    sstainable (maintaining the stats qo)

but actually re-growsthe forest oer me.

The shade strctres and pao frnitre wemanfactre spport or restoraon work.

Theres an ethicthat connects our forestry

work with or prodcts, and its ery

simple: We dont cut corners. Just as a

    Sequoia sempervirenslives for hundreds or

thousands of years, were in this business

for the long run. When you buy a Forever

Redwood piece, you can be assured of a

prodct handcraed with great care inevery detail. If its not built to lastand

    bilt beafllywe dont make it.

    Bi s, bi bfy.In the

    following pages, yoll discoer exactly

what that means. Ie wrien this book to

answer as many of yor qesons abot

pergolas and pavilions as I can. It describes

the process of buying from us step by step.

Most of all, this book will enrich yor idea

    of whats possiblewith our structures.

All the photos you see were sent in by

cstomers or taken on locaon by or sta.

    We specialie in cstom work.

How might your pergola or pavilion come

to life? Let us help you create something

truly special that adds value, usefulness,

and beauty to your home for decades tocome, with the good feeling of knowing

    that your purchase helps restore

    Redwood forestlands.

I look forward to hearing abot yor

project. Please call or email me when

youre ready to get started, or visit

    ForeverRedwood.com to begin congring

the pergola of your dreams today.

Thank yo sincerely for yor interest

    and support.

    complete this breathtakingly

    beafl design.

simply prefer a smaller structure. Smaller

pergolas are less than 10 x 10, and can

also be made aached or with an

    arched roof.

    MARINOuTDOOR KITCHEN PERGOLA

The playful, arching roof design is a

customer favorite. The curves are the

This custom job started with the masonry columns already in place. Webuilt a beer, thicker, and more decay-resistant new pergola roof in

Mature Redwood for this Mexico City customer. The prior pergola from

another manufacturer had only lasted 6 years. The new Redwood mbers

are massive, full-dimension 3x6 and 2x6 mbers, and the arc is built

using rounded 4x8s that are bolted together. This pergolas center arc is

16 feet in diameter and the overall length is over 50 feet.

    BUILD IT YOUR WAY

Once yoe decided on the style yo like (or yo know

for sure you need a custom style, and weve discussed

whats possible), its me to focs on exact siing and roof

    congraon of yor strctre.

All or Pergolas are bilt from the grond p in exactly the

same way. First, we se large mbers for posts made from100% real wood. We notch ot a poron of the top of the

post to place the horizontal beams that will support the

roof and they are addionally spported by 45 degree thick

mber braces. Atop this basic Pergola skeleton, we bild all

    our roof styles.

For addional long-term strctral strength, we add solid

mber blocking in-between the dal spport mbers as

shown in the drawing at boom le. With this blocking, the

dal spports are in eect conerted into one solid 7 1/4inch x 6 1/2 inch mber.

On ForeerRedwood.com, yoll nd a prodct congrator

that lets yo mix and match sies, styles, and opons for

what yore looking for, yo can always contact s to nd

ot if we can make it for yo. Odds are, we can. Since each

Foreer Redwood pergola is handmade, cstom siing/

    shaping is our specialty.

! Pergolas are sized by roofarea,

    so, for example, a 10 x 10 Garden

Pergola has a square roof with 10 sides. Since the roof overhangs

the posts, the posts are set in by

a few inches at each corner. For

    most Pergolas and Pavilions, the

ideal setback for the posts is 8

to 12 inches. Our default is 12

inches, but this can be reduced or

    increased depending on the style

    and circumstances.

    GARDEN PERGOLA ROOF STYLES

The Foreer Redwood Garden Pergola was the ery rst

Pergola we bilt. It is the tradional at roof design bilt with

large mbers that goes back thosands of years. We bild it ina ariety of roong congraons to meet yor needs:

    STANDARD OPEN ROOF

This is or strongest roof congraon and or most poplar.

    It ses 1 3/4 x 1 3/4 roof slats with 1 3/4 x 5 3/4 raers

perpendiclar to the slats below. We sally recommend 18

on center spacing for raers and slats inially. (Note: raers

on Small Pergolas are 1 3/4 by 3 3/4, bt Small Pergolas with

    Extra-Heay Timbers se the same 1 3/4 by 5 3/4 raers as

    the Large Pergolas.)

To maximie the shading capabilies of the standard open roof

design pergola, yo shold orient the raers north and soth.

This way, as the sn moes from side to side oer yor raers,

the raer height will maximie shade most of the morning and

aernoon giing yo almost total shade oer half the day and

leng in sbstanal sn only a few hors when oerhead in

    the midday hours.

On the next page are comparae drawings of the three mostoen bilt raer and slat spacing opons on or standard

open roof, pls a lace panel alternae.

Since all our pergolas are hand built, we can build it almost

anyway yod like. For example, we once lted the roof a bit

from one end of the raers to the other and then bilt tonge

and grooe slats installed sh with one another. The cstomer

    TIMBER NOTCHING FOR

    SUPERIOR STRENGTH

If you want a pergola that will hold up well

and look great for decades, be sre yo get

a pergola that is fully notched. Our pergolas

hae eery mber notched into eery other

mber. Eerywhere two mbers toch, we

add a notch. This takes a lot of me to do and

increases the cost, but it accomplishes two

important things: 1) It distribtes the stresses

throughout the structure for a stronger

pergola that will not sag or warp on yo. 2) It

insres that no mber EvER moes een an

inch. The mbers cannot moe since each ised into its neighbor. This keeps the pergola

straight and beafl thr the decades.

No notching or incomplete notching will

ineitably lead to twisng and trning and

shrinking mbers that will throw the lines o

    as the years go by.

    DECORATIVE COLUMNS AND

    MASONRY WORK

    DECORATIvE COLuMNS

Many people choose to add decorae colmns (or pillars) to

their pergola or pailion. There are two main kinds of colmns:

load-bearing and non-load-bearing. The dierence is simply that

load-bearing colmns sstain the weight of the roof, replacing the

wooden posts that wold otherwise be there, whereas non-load-

bearing columns are installed around the wooden posts, which are

    anchored to the ground.

Althogh Foreer Redwood does not manfactre decorae

colmns, we can spport yo in craing a pergola or pailion

to go with the style of columns you choose. We recommend

that if yore interested in load-bearing colmns, yo prchase

them locally, as shipping costs on them are sbstanal. If yore

interested in non-load-bearing colmns, yo can nd many

examples on the Internet. These are aailable in berglass, wood,

PVC, and other materials. You can also google architectural

    colmns to see yor opons.

    MASONRY WORK

If yo hae exisng masonry work in place, or wold like masonry

work to sere as part of yor pergola or pailion spport, thepost length can be cstomied to match the exisng height of

the masonry. Or, we can simply provide you with a roof, without

posts. As with decorae colmns, yor masonry work can be

load-bearing or non-load-bearing. In the former case, the posts are

anchored to the top of the colmn. In the laer case, the masonry

is bilt arond the standard pergola posts aer they are anchored

to the grond. When masonry work is added aer the posts are

installed, it is a good idea to create a barrier between the wood

posts and the masonry work. We recommend Hardiboard to do so.

It is a small investment that will add piece of mind.

TRIM KIT TO HIDE ELECTRICAL WIRING

If you plan to run wiring to add lights or fans to your Pergola,

we can add a cut out to your Posts and place a trim piece so the

electrical wiring will be almost inisible (see drawings). The trim is

centered on the interior side of the Post(s) and it is aached with

nish nails for a smooth nish.

When yo order a strctre with an electrical trim kit, yor rst set

of drawings will include numbered posts so you may choose and

let s know which post(s) will hae the this opon.

    CEILING FAN BASE

To beat the summer heat, you

might want to install a ceiling

fan. Well provide a base and

    electrical condits to make it

easy. The base is added between

the raers with for bolts (two

per side). Well place it in the center of the ceiling by defalt, bt

of corse, yo can place it almost anywhere yo hae scient

clearance. You may add two ceiling fan bases to larger structures,

like the pergola shown at le.

r Wood choIceS:THE PROS AND CONS OF REDWOOD, CEDAR, PINE, AND

    OTHER MATERIALS

One of the most important decisions yoll make abot yor

structure is what to build it out of. For thousands of years,

wood has been the tradional and faored material for pergolas.

Many wood species are aailable and yor choice of wood will

determine how yor pergola will look, whether it will be low or

high maintenance, and whether it will last just a few years or

    many decades.

The six most abndant woods aailable for otdoor se in the

u.S. and Canada are Cedars, Pressre Treated Woods, Pines, Teak,

Exoc Hardwoods and California Redwood. This chapter will reiew

the pros and cons of these woods specically for se in pergolas.

THE TRUTH AND FICTION OF TEAK

Teak (Tectona grandis) is a decidos hardwood renowned for

its elegance, durability, and longevity even under severe climate

condions. Teak is becoming the most widely sed otdoor wood

in the U.S. and Canada. Its a good economic choice for outdoor

furniture or structures you want to last. It has some maintenance

issues, but it is reasonably priced and well distributed.

Enironmentally, it is a mixed bag with teak. Teak sold in the u.S.

and Canada is 99% plantaon grown. There are teak plantaons all

oer the world now with a growing concentraon in Central and

Soth America. These plantaons grow Teak in rows and harest

in 20- to 40-year rotaons in most cases. The highest qality teak

plantaons hae p to 80-year rotaons, bt they are rare. Teak is

marketed as a sstainably harested alternae to exoc woods

taken from rain forests. The teak indstry is large and strongly

markets this enironmental angle. Its part trth, part con.

The trth is teak does take pressre o the nae forests as a

sorce of good qality wood. The con is a signicant percentage

of these plantaons are grown on lands that were once forests.

And, teak tree farms are not nae to the Americas (they are

from Asia). They replace nae biologically dierse lands with

an imported monocltre that is known to degrade the wildlife

    habitat for many species.

So, its a mixed bag with the teak. Good qality wood and beer

than logging the Amazon, but not green in the real sense either.

    WHAT ABOUT REDWOOD?

Redwood was the outdoor wood of choice for most of the

20th centry. Like teak, it is a beafl wood with an excellent

reptaon for otdoor drability. It was aailable naonwide and

sed for anything otdoors nl the early 1990s. Bt, the Redwood

forests were oer-logged and in the 1990s, lmber prodcon

collapsed to 1/3rd the leels of prior decades. It has not recoered

and will not unless major changes are implemented in the way the

privately owned forests are harvested. Today, Redwood is available

only in California and a few western states. The oerall qality

has dropped because the average size of trees being harvested is

    smaller than in prior decades.

In 1995, Foreer Redwood prchased and began to restore its

Redwood forestland. We oer or enre frnitre line in 5 grades

of wood (3 grades of Redwood, a Doglas-r grade, and or new

Mosaic Eco-Wood grade). Redwood, or most poplar grade, has

a 15-year decay warrantyand is beer qality than the standard

Redwood aailable on the West Coast market today. The Matre

Redwood, has a 20-year decay warrantyand is comparable in

drability to the highest grades of teak. And, or highest grade, the

reclaimed Old-Growth Redwood, has a 30-year decay warranty. It

exceeds the climate drability of any plantaon-grown teak.

It takes centries of slow growth to make lmber that is irtally

decay-proof. Only a natral, matre forest can do that. We dont

vs o-gw rw.Lckily, enogh logs were le on

the forest oor in the early to mid 1900s to keep or frnitre

50 to 100 years and are sll in excellent shape! Case closed.

diverse forests and save money, consider having your outdoor

frnitre made from any of or other excellent grades of Redwood

    or Doglas-r.

    AND CEDAR?

There are six Cedar species aailable in the u.S. and Canada. We

only recommend Western Red Cedar and Port Orford Cedar:

Western Red Cedar is nae to the west coast and is the most

common Cedar. It is more rot and insect resistant than the

Eastern ariees. Western Red Cedar is a ne opon becase of

its naturally strong decay and insect resistance. It is lightweight,

dimensionally stable, relaely strong, and has a beafl grain

that is easy to work. Tables, pergolas and other otdoor strctres

bilt from all-heartwood Western Red Cedar can be expected to

last 15 years or more in most climates with minimal maintenance.

With some maintenance, theyll last longer. The heartwood is a

fragrant red/dll brown and the sapwood is nearly white. If the

manfactrer wont specify all-heartwood, then it has sapwood in

it and yo can expect decay isses to start showing p within 10 to

12 years if yo lie in a moist climate.

Port Orford Cedar is a West Coast nae of Oregon and California.

It is also relaely strong and highly decay resistant. Its similar to

Western Red Cedar, but not as abundant. If you can purchase an

item made with all-heartwood Port Orford Cedar, yoll hae a

long-lasng beafl piece at a reasonable cost.

The other North American CedarsAtlanc Cedar, Incense

Cedar, Northern White Cedar, and Sothern Red Cedarsare

not recommended for any large project like tables, pergolas, big

benches, or planter boxes. They are beafl, aromac, and hae

good to excellent decay and bg resistance, bt they are relaely

weak in strctral, compression, or bending strengths. They will

not hold up well to wind, weight, or other structural stresses unless

yo signicantly oerbild in terms of the amont and sie of the

    mbers sed.

In general, for any large project involving cedar, we recommend:

    1) Make sre all the mbers are heartwood only for maximm

drability. 2) If yore ecologically minded, ask where the wood is

coming from and how it was harvested.

    HOW CEDAR COMPARES TO REDWOOD,

    TEAK, AND THE EXOTIC HARDWOODS

Western Red Cedar competes mostly with Teak, Redwood, and

exoc Hardwoods for the higher-end otdoor market where

appearance and durability are the main points being considered.

Exoc Hardwoods are not considered in this chapter becase they

tend to be harested in ecologically mrky ways and are not widely

    or consistently available.

Cedar is jst as beafl, dimensionally stable, and easy to work

as Redwood. Like Redwood, it takes well to jst abot any stain,

but it is priced lower than Redwood because even though it will

be highly decay and bug resistant, a pergola built with the best

all-heartwood Western Red Cedar will not last as long as the same

strctre bilt with the best all-heartwood Redwood.

Redwood has more decay and insect resistant tannins in its wood.

For otdoor applicaons, it is the longest lasng wood that grows

natrally in North America. Comparing the same wood grades,

Redwood tends on aerage to last 30 to 35% longer than Western

    Red Cedar.

Western Red Cedar is relaely strong in terms of compression,

bending, and overall structural strength, but Redwood is a bit

    stronger in all strength categories.

We have built a few items using Western Red Cedar over the years

for the Cedar enthsiasts that dont know Redwood. If yod like

to bild sing Western Red Cedar let s know. Please keep in mind

it will hae a bit thinner mber sies than the photos seen on or

website becase we ct or Redwood mbers on aerage 25 to

30% thicker than standard lmber sies.

    WHAT ABOUT PINE?

In dry climates you can build outdoor items from untreated Pine

and either paint it or se a good qality oil nish. Bt most Pines

tend to not have great insect or decay resistance naturally. For

example, Sothern Yellow Pine is a beafl wood that is readily

available at a good price, but it wont hold up in the moist outdoors

more than 5 to 7 years nless yo are reglarly renishing/

    resealing it.

In almost all cases yo are asking for a lot of work to maintain

any outdoor item built using Pine, regardless of how dry your

climate may be. Planter boxes in parclar will not hold p well

because of the constant moisture from the inside out. By contrast,

anything bilt from Western Red Cedar, California Redwood, Teak

or Pressre Treated Pine will reqire minimal maintenance once

up. Southern Yellow Pine is widely available today and heavily

marketed. unfortnately the same applies to this ariety of Pine as

    is menoned aboe.

    a Better, economIcal alternatIVe:douglaSFIr

Blonde or light-brown colored, Doglas-r is strctrally ery

strong, with sbstanal decay resistance (thogh not as mch

as Redwood). Its ideal for drier climates, where yo cold see a

20-year lifespan with lile maintenance. In weer climates we

recommend painng yor Doglas-r pergola to help the wood last

longer. Foreer Redwood oers all or prodcts in a Doglas-r

    PRESSURE TREATED WOOD

Pressure Treated Timbers are popular because

they are inexpensie, long-lasng, and aailable

almost anywhere in any size you need. They

are made from aerage qality Pine lmber of

several species that is processed chemically into

rot and insect resistant mbers. Pressre Treated

Pine has improved in appearance over the

years and is heaily marketed. Pressre treated

pines can last for several decades and are also

strctrally relaely strong. They will work well

for some installaons, bt they do hae a few

    drawbacks worth considering:

The surface tends to dry out and

develop splinters in a few years unless

    regularly maintained.

The wood is toxic de to the chemical

processes sed to make it rot resistant

    (not recommended for seang srfaces

    or eang srfaces).

The appearance just cant match up to the

natral beaty of Teak, Cedar, Redwood or

    an exoc hardwood.

The wood grain is punctured and of an

nnatral color. It reqires more staining

and other nish work to create a decent

    surface appearance.

    A NOTE ABOUT ALUMINUM

Althogh this is beyond the scope of this report, we do want to menon a cople

points abot alminm from or experience. unlike natral wood, alminm

gets ery hot to the toch in smmer, ery cold in winter, and is qite noisy when

it rains. While we do not recommend all-alminm strctres, we hae seen

cstomers choose to add metal roong of arios kinds aboe or Pailions, and

this does work well becase the solid wood ceiling helps me the rain noise. If

yo are considering this, please let s know dring the drawing process so we can

For paer paos and agstone paos we dont recommend aaching directly to these srfaces becase

CONFIRM YOuR PERGOLA DRAWINGS PRIOR TO LAYING FOuNDATIONS

By conrming yor pergola drawings rst yo may realie that yo oerlooked something

or yo may want to make a change that will aect the length or width. For example,

for a standard 10 x 12 Arched Pergola, the posts are recessed back 12 inches from the

edge of the roof. This places yor posts at 8 x 10 to the otside 4 corners of the posts

and at 7 6 1/2 x 9 6 1/2 on center. If yo are certain this is what yo want, yo can do

the foongs before ordering yor Pergola and before yo receie yor drawings for yor

order (all Pergola orders receie drawings within three bsiness days for yor reiew to

gie yo the me and tool to make last minte adjstments before bilding).

Oen, when cstomers see their drawings, they decide to change some detail like adding

a bit more space between the posts or adding a foot or two to the length or width.

If yo are in the process of laying a fondaon for a pergola that will reqire foongs

(recommended for agstone or paer paos), it is best to hae the design of the pergola

conrmed so yo or yor contractor can incorporate foongs in the exact locaon

(see descripons of foong aboe). Once foongs are installed yo will not be able

to moe the post posion aer reiewing the drawings withot casing yorself an

    unnecessary headache.

not recommend it because if you set the anchors in the concrete pour and they are not

exactly on center to the fracon of an inch, yor installaon will not go smoothly. By

sing or anchor kit, if yor concrete por is o by a half inch or so, yo can always place

the anchor a bit o the center of the concrete por at installaon to compensate.

If you do not want the posts in the weather and do not mind being able to see the

concrete from below, pour the concrete half an inch above ground level.

The photos at right show the 4 simple steps to follow once yor srface below the

STEP 1: Place the anchor where it will be

installed; mark the ground as shown anddrill 2 holes as shown 1/4 wide hole

    4 deep

STEP 2: Ratch down the anchor bolts (

x 4). Then take o the nut before you

    HIGH WIND AREAS

If you live in an area subject to severe storms or strong

winds, we oer a Gale Wind Anchor Kit(rated to 80 mph

winds) and a Hurricane Wind Anchor Kit(rated to 110

mph winds) to secre yor strctre. For the Gale Wind

Anchor Kit, yo will need to dig a 10 wide, 24 deep hole

for each post. For the Hurricane Wind Anchor Kit, your

holes mst be 12 wide and 30 deep. Yoll bry the

boom poron of the anchors in concrete, and aach the

wooden posts aer the concrete is set.

For best reslts, we recommend doing the concrete work

at least three days ahead of the pergola installaon to ensre the

concrete is fully cured. Youll then place your posts in the cradles and

bolt them to the anchors. We supply wood trim pieces to hide the

anchors completely, so you wont see the metal hardware beneath.

n:In areas where the grond freees, yo mst go at least six

inches below your frost line with the concrete pour.

PAVER OR FLAGSTONE PATIO INSTALLATION DETAILS

If yo are placing yor pergola on a paer pao, por the concrete to be leel with the nished paers.

This way, aer adding the trim, the boom of the trim will rest atop the paers seamlessly. Since the

paer pao is sally a few inches aboe grade, yo may hae to por a bit higher than on ndeeloped

grond to get the post height to line p exactly with the paer height.

Somemes obstrcons or other wall details make a ledger board
