ERAs Senior Network

Eras Senior Network provides seniors in

Milwaukee County with rides to medical

appointments and grocery stores. Adults

age 60 and over who need rides or sea-

sonal yard clean-up, should call Eras at

414-488-6500. The organization is also

seeking volunteer drivers and helpers.

Curbside Dining

Enjoy delicious, nutritious, balanced

curbside lunches at the West Allis Sen-

ior Center.

Anyone 60 and over is welcome to par-

ticipate regardless of income along with

his/her spouse of any age. The sug-

gested contribution per meal is $3 for

diners 60 and older; $8 is the cost for

guests under 60.

Curbside meals are served Monday

through Friday beginning at 11 a.m.

You will need to pre-register for a

diner’s card and then make reserva-

tions at least 24 hours in advance by

calling 414-302-8703.

To make it safer for our members at-

tending classes and diners, we have

recently moved our curbside dining dis-

tribution to our 70th Street entrance .

Meals on Wheels

The Meals on Wheels Program pro-

motes independent living for home-

bound older adults through a delivery

of a hot, nutritious meal Monday

through Friday

A suggested contribution of $3 per

meal is appreciated to offset the cost of

the program.

If you, or someone you know could

benefit from having meals delivered,

please call the Aging Resource Center

at (414) 289-6874 to request an as-

sessment.

INTERESTING PROGRAMS

Safety and Scams

Corporal Rod Nelson, West Allis Police

Department, will discuss important safe-

ty pointers on Thursday, November 4

at 12:30 pm. He’ll also talk about cur-

rent scams and the dangers of sub-

stance abuse in our community. Join us

for this engaging presentation. Deadline

to register is November 3.

41 for Freedom

Join us for a fascinating and historical

look at the development of our country’s

Ballistic Missile Submarine Fleet on

Thursday, September 30 at 1:00 pm

The fleet was used to protect our home-

land from nuclear attack under the pres-

sures generated by the escalating Cold

War. Guest speaker, John Lindstadt, is

a former nuclear submarine officer. Pre-

registration requested; call 414-302-

8700.

Freedom on Wheels

Chris Fox from Milwaukee County Transit (MCTS) is joining us on, Thurs-day, October 14 at 12:30 pm to pre-sent the Freedom on Wheels Program.

Participants will learn about the various transportation options available, ac-ceptable fare forms, proper bus eti-quette rules, safety concerns and trip planning using the Ride MCTS website and app.

Afterwards, everyone will take a tour of a MCTS bus, followed by a ride to our Great Lake Michigan to enhance the hands-on-feel of riding the bus and practicing what was discussed in the classroom.

This program is open to the public, but pre-registration is required. Please call 414-302-8700.

FRIENDSHIP

Senior Breakfast Group

3rd Wednesday, 9:00 a.m.

This fun social group meets once a

month at various restaurants. Partici-

pants pay for their own meal, including

tax and tip.

Enjoy good conversation and meet new

people.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

West Allis Senior Center

Trust Fund

Donations to the West Allis Senior Center Trust Fund

are tax deductible according to current tax code.

Funds are held separately by the City of West Allis for

the West Allis Senior Center. Individuals and organi-

zations wishing to make a donation to the Trust Fund

should contact the Commission on Aging or the Sen-

ior Center Services Coordinator. Donations may be

made at any time during the year and should be

made payable to the West Allis Senior Center Trust

Fund. Restricted donations are subject to approval

by the West Allis Commission on Aging.

Commission on Aging

The West Allis Commission on Aging generally meets on the fourth Monday of each

month at 3:45 p.m. No meetings in July or December. The public is invited to attend

and observe these meetings. Members include: Patricia Wikenhauser, Chair; Deborah

Tiegs, Assistant Chair; Diane Langford, Margee Maydak; Dave Rymaszewski; Linda

Timm; John Zentgraf and Heather Uzowulu, Eras Representative.

Cookie Fundraiser Helpers: Baking begins the week of November

29. Volunteers interested in helping

decorate and bake should call 414-302-

8700 or sign up in person by Tuesday,

November 8. Shirley Laux and June

Killips are the fundraiser coordinators.

A meeting date for all helpers is sched-

uled for Monday, November 15 at

10:00 a.m.

Christmas Cookie

Extravaganza! Order Deadline:

Monday, November 29. Cookies are

packaged in one dozen containers;

fudge is packaged in half-pound con-

tainers. All are festive with tags for gift

giving! Please see the back cover of

this newsletter for information on order-

ing.

Arthritis Exercise Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays

10:00—11:00 a.m.

Relieve your arthritis pain through gentle

motion and activities designed to help in-

crease joint flexibility, range of motion

and maintain muscle strength. Sessions

feature gentle stretching, low intensity,

aerobics and chair exercises. Shirley

Laux is the Certified Arthritis Exercise In-

structor; Chuck Chapeta and Maria Vega,

Assistants.

Beat the Blues Wednesdays 12:30 – 2:00 p.m.

2nd and 4th of Month

Feeling depressed or anxious? Join our

peer support group that meets every oth-

er week. Each session offers a safe and

caring environment where you can take

comfort in talking to others and know that

you aren’t alone. Sandy King, Group Fa-

cilitator.

Toe Nail Trimmers

2nd Monday of Month 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.

This program has registered nurses who

are specially trained to trim nails. No

soaking of feet is needed. Registration is

required by calling 262-719-0336. The

cost is $29 each visit, make check paya-

ble to Toe Nail Trimmers.

Chair Yoga

Thursdays, 10:30 – 11:00 a.m.

Instructor Susie Melott will guide partici-

pants through seated and standing pos-

tures with the support of a chair. Breath-

ing techniques will be included in all clas-

ses, as well as a brief meditation at the

There are many individuals who need an informative presentation about the basics of Medicare and the benefits included.

Milwaukee County Department on Aging will be giving a presentation on Supple-ment/Medicare Gap Plans.

Join us Wednesday, October 20, 1:00 p.m. at the West Allis Senior Center to learn the differences and get any ques-tions answered.

Calling All Knitters,

Crocheters & Loomers

Please consider joining our Gifts of

Warmth (GOW) group. Members work

at their leisure to create handmade mit-

tens, scarfs, hats and afghans. These

wonderfully warm and colorful items are

collected and then donated to area

schools and agencies. The Senior Cen-

ter accepts donations of 4-ply and spe-

cialty yarns throughout the year for the

GOW projects. Completed items may

be dropped off anytime. Please call

414-302-8700 to notify them when

you’d like to pick up yarn or drop off

your completed items.

Help them keep Milwaukee warm.

Wool Bowls with Barb:

Join Us Friday, December 3, 1:00-3:00

p.m. to create a wool bowl. Soap, wa-

ter, and wool fiber will come together

under your fingertips to make a colorful

wool “bowl”. This vessel is an ideal

catch all for your keys/jewelry/nuts.

Just don’t use it for your morning
