MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Mr Peter Karamoshos

Getting the Best out of our Students This year, our staff Professional Development focus has been on giving students the most stimulating and engaging learning experience possible. Given that students spend a majority of their time with their teachers in the classroom, we acknowledge that lessons must be interesting, interactive and relevant and that students should “learn my doing”. In the first semester, we created a document “The Road to Academic Success” where staff identified what a rich and effective learning experience should include in a classroom at St George College. The five key areas identified were: Climate Pedagogy Learning Space Content Feedback and Assessment

Within each of these key areas, staff listed relevant indictors which now gives us all a framework by which we can judge our own professional practice. During our Professional Development Day at the start of this term, three of our staff gave informative presentations to all staff. The focus was on pedagogy; specifically on how we differentiate our teaching to cater for students of varying strengths and weaknesses. The quality of the presentations reinforced the high level of expertise we have on our staff. Kelly Pridmore and Kylie Greenfield shared strategies on differentiating from a gifted perspective but which also support all students. They presented practical ideas on how to get students to be critical and creative in their thinking, activities to make them reflect and analyse, how student groupings can have an impact on learning, and tasks which ask students what they see, think and wonder. Vicki Sakellariou gave us strategies that focussed specifically on boys but again, supports all students. She reminded us that many boys do learn differently from girls and that in our lessons, we should include graphs, pictures and visual aids, hands-on activities, activities which are short and sharp, healthy competition, opportunities for movement and clear structure. She also reinforced the importance of the student/teacher relationship. Ben Hall shared strategies on differentiating from an EALD perspective. Ben teaches and supports many of our international students and the ideas he presented apply equally to all students. He reinforced how difficult the English language can be in terms of the same word having different meanings, words that sound the same have different spelling and many words having the same meaning. He suggested that pictures and graphs were important, that different forms of assessment be available and group work was essential. Ben also reinforced the im-portance of spending time to get to know each of the students. The three presentations were outstanding and inspired us all to improve our professional practice. Through this, we will provide our students with the highest quality learning experience possible.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Mr Peter Karamoshos

House Celebrations Tuesday, 5 July was OLYMPIA day. It was an opportunity for all Olympia students to come to school in their House colour (yellow) and participate in an afternoon of team bonding and House spirt. All Olympia students took part in an ‘Amazing Race’ style game. The objective was to find hidden letters around the school using cryptic clues. The first team to collect and return to base with all the letters would be crowned the “Olympia Amazing Race Champions”. Every team worked hard to win but in the end, the Year 11 boys efforts proved too strong. There was a lot of running around and flustered students all trying to find the strategically hidden letters however, a lot of fun was had by all and the student’s displayed great team work and enthusiasm. Well done to all the Olympia House students for showing great determination and exhibiting positive attitudes. Miss Vicki Sakellariou | Head of House - Olympia

Year 12 Mentoring At the beginning of this year, a group of Year 12 students volunteered to join the Junior Campus-Mentoring Program. The group of students were assigned a junior class and coordinated a time during our flexible learning time to visit the assigned class. When we walk in the door every week and see the young students smiling faces, we are excited and appreciative that we get to spend time with the Junior students of our College.

Year 12 is such a stressful year and often being at the Senior Campus all day can get us down; the fact we are able to go to the Junior Campus and see the younger students make us laugh and take our minds off of our work, even if it is just for 50 minutes. We have so much fun with the students, helping them with their class work and activities and we have built close bonds with each and every student in our class. We have had trips to the library, played outside and enjoyed time in the classrooms which has brought back so many memories that has made us reflect on the amazing journey many of us have shared at St George College.

Mentoring brightens up our day and we love being able to participate in other Junior Campus activities such as last term’s disco, which was a fun and successful event. We hope this years Year 11 students take advantage of this opportunity next year and really enjoy spending time with the younger students of our College.

MESSAGE FROM THE ACTING ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Miss Angela Drakopoulos

Junior Campus Report This term, I have been grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the students and staff at the Junior Campus. In the past fortnight we have definitely learnt valuable lessons from each other and have grown to appreciate the fact that even though we work on different ends of the street, we are one school and we are here to support and learn from each other. To be kind and caring were the focus words of the first week that I asked the students to remember and to act upon, as these behav-iours are not only part of human nature but also reflective of our school ethos. Students showed examples of being kind and caring by bringing a peer to the office to be cared for because they fell over in the yard at playtime, by sharing, by caring about the environment and keeping the school neat and tidy. Our focus words in week 2 were to be grateful and giving. Grateful for our good health, our loving family and friends and that we have everything we need to live a healthy and happy life. The students and staff across both campuses participated in Jeans for Genes Day, giving them an extra reason to be grateful and giving. Jeans for Genes Day is a national event organised by the Children’s Medical research Institute where very important research is conducted to find cures for childhood diseases. Thank you to all families who donated a total of $500.00 towards this very worthwhile cause. It is important for our students to understand that everything we do for others, the big and little things, are equally as important. It was wonderful to get to know the students and their parents, celebrate their successes and share prayer time with them every morning in the Junior Campus Hall. The key to a child’s success is the positive relationship between parent, teacher and the school. This shows solidarity and support of one another to form a winning team between child, teacher and parent. Thank you to our Principal Mrs Gina Kadis for giving me this opportunity and to all the staff, students and their families at the Junior Campus for making me feel so welcome. We welcome back Miss Kosmetos in week 3 and I return to my duties at the Senior Cam-pus, however, I will come for a walk down the street more often from now on because I will miss the big smiles and hugs! Congratulations to our Junior Campus Student Representatives, Year 4 students, Kalliope Demetriou and James Angelis. As the senior members of the Junior Campus they will play a very important role in being the voice of all the students at the Junior Campus.
