    Forest Reserves

    To facilitate better forest management and control, the forest reserves in Sabah are divided into7 different classes :

    Class I - Prot ection Forest . Forest conserved for the protection of watershed and maintenanceof the stability of essential climatic and other environmental factors. These areas cannot belogged. There are 364,766 hectares of Protection Forest in 50 locations throughout Sabah.

    Class I I - Comm ercial Forest. Forest allocated for logging to supply timber and other produce,contributing to the State's economy. Logging is carried out according to Sustainable ForestManagement (SFM) principles. Collectively there are 2,665,886 hectares of Commercial ForestReserves in 32 locations throughout Sabah.

    Class I I I - Domestic Forest . The produce from this forest is for consumption of localcommunities only and commercial use is discouraged. Collectively there are 7,355 hectares of Domestic Forest Reserves in 10 locations throughout Sabah.

    Class I V - Amenit y Forest . Forest for providing amenity and recreation to local inhabitants.Recreational facilities may be provided in attractive sites, often on roadsides, within thesereserves. Exotic tree species are often planted to enhance the amenity value of these areas.Collectively, there are 21,284.246 hectares of Amenity Forest Reserves in 17 locations throughoutSabah.

    Class V - Mangrove Forest. Forest for supplying mangrove timber and other produce to meetthe general trade demands. The Rhizophora sp. is the most commonly harvested, and theproducts range from firewood to fishing stakes. Collectively, there are 320,521.560 hectares of Mangrove Forest Reserves in 19 locations throughout Sabah.

    Class VI - Virgi n Jungle Forest . Forest conserved intact strictly for forestry research purposes.Logging is strictly prohibited in this forest reserve. The Sepilok Virgin Jungle Reserve in Sandakancovers 4,000 hectares and is one of the largest tracts of undisturbed lowland dipterocarp forests

    in Sabah. Collectively, there are 92,400.700 hectares of Virgin Forest Reserves in 52 locationsthroughout Sabah.

    Class VI I - Wild lif e Reserve. Forest conserved primarily for the protection and research of wildlife. The Sumatran Rhinoceros is one of the endangered wild animals homed in the WildlifeReserves. Collectively, there are 132,653 hectares of Wildlife Reserves in two locations, both inthe Dent Peninsula on the East Coast of Sabah. They are Tabin Wildlife Reserve and KulambaWildlife Reserve.
