Service of Worship
August 13, 2017 at 10:00 am Welcome! Thank you for joining us today for worship.
Please join us in wearing a name tag so that we might greet you.
Our ushers have hearing devices, large print editions of the bulletin,
activity bags for children staying in worship, and directions to our
nursery for babies and young children.
Preparation for Worship
Do not worry about anything but in everything by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which
surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7

Greeting Our God with Joy
Call to Worship Elder Elizabeth Shaw
One: Why are we here?
All: We come for many reasons-- for forgiveness, for renewal, for
strength, for fellowship.
One: What a privilege it is to worship God in community!
All: We will open our hearts to God and one another.
One: We are grateful for many blessings.
All: We will raise our voices in thanksgiving and praise.
One: Let us come into God's presence with joy.
All: Come, let us worship God!

* Opening Hymn No. 20 “All Things Bright and Beautiful”
Renewing Our Relationship with God
Prayer of Confession
Loving God, you have shown us love beyond measure. You have
seen us through hard times and many challenges. You have forgiven,
restored, and encouraged us by the power of your Holy Spirit.
Forgive us once more, for our memories are short. We too easily lose
sight of your mercies, and focus instead on scarcity and fear. We
misuse the gift of imagination by dwelling on all that is bad in life,
rather than trusting in your faithful presence. Wake us up, and
where we have wandered from the truth help us remember who
and whose we are. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Time of Silent Confession
Kyrie eleison (Lord, have mercy) Bob Chilcott (from Peace Mass)

Assurance of Pardon

Scripture Lessons
Psalm 105 (in unison)
O give thanks to the LORD, call on his name, make known his deeds
among the peoples.
Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wonderful works.
Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek
the LORD rejoice.
Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually.
Remember the wonderful works he has done, his miracles, and the
judgments he uttered,
O offspring of his servant Abraham, children of Jacob, his chosen
ones.
He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth.
He is mindful of his covenant forever, of the word that he
commanded, for a thousand generations,
the covenant that he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to
Isaac.

Matthew 14: 22-33
Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to
the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had
dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When
evening came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by
the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And
early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. But when
the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, “It is
a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them
and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter answered him,
“Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said,
“Come.” So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and
came toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became
frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus
immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of
little faith, why did you doubt?” When they got into the boat, the wind
ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the
Son of God.”

is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
