1. General information
The completion of the BScBA Program of the Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli Campus requires students to spend their last semester abroad. This is done in a foreign university, where students take a semester of undergraduate level courses equivalent to the usual workload expected in the specific institution during the term. If the exchange university uses a system different from the semester system, the Student Exchange Coordinator in Mikkeli should be consulted. The courses you will complete during the study abroad will be transferred to the Minor Subject Studies. Before leaving Mikkeli, please make sure that you have completed all the other requirements for the degree: As a rule the student must have completed all required core courses (60 credits), methodological studies (12 credits), courses in major (42 credits), language and communication courses (18 credits) and elective studies (18 credits) prior to the study abroad period (total of 150 credits). The amount of credits will be checked before the nominations are send to the host universities.
2. Criteria for selection
The students can express their preferences of the university and country by giving ten (10) alternative choices in preferred order. Yet, we would like to remind that the BScBA Program makes the final placement decisions based on the following criteria:
Ranking
Please note that the ranking of students for the selection will be calculated with a different formula than before (for example for BScBA18s). In addition to the grades of the first year studies, the new formula (taken in use on 1 August 2019 and concerns students completing the study abroad in 2021-2022 and after that) will take also the number of completed credits and the semesters studied in the program into account.
Students are selected for exchange based on the applications submitted after the first full year of studies (modules 1-15). Students are nominated to exchange universities primarily based on their study index, provided that they fulfill possible language requirements and other possible criteria given by the exchange universities (e.g. minimum GPA).
The most important selection criterion is success based on the study index. It is calculated from
• the total number of credits completed in the BScBA Program during the first full year of studies including the courses completed during summer modules (= first year courses in modules 1-15, max 93 cr taken into account)) and
• the Weighted Grade Point Average (GPA) of these studies • related to the study time (the number of semesters student has been present at the School
of Business – 2 for the first year students).
The formula for calculating the study index is the following:
credits * weighted GPA number of semesters attended

Only the studies that are part of a student's BScBA degree and completed during the official study right as a degree student at the Aalto University School of Business are taken into account. Exception to this are the Open University Track students for whom all credits completed for the Open University Track requirements for the BScBA degree will be taken into account.
The credits and GPA are calculated from courses in the approved personal study plan (HOPS) of the BScBA degree.
Progress in studies is proportioned to the number of semester attended. The semester ongoing during the application period is not taken into account. If a student has enrolled as non-attending previously, it will not have a negative effect on the selection. An attended semester can be removed from the application only due to strong arguments, such as health issues or compulsory military service.
If two or more applicants have the same index and they are competing for the same exchange place, the overall situation of the applicants is evaluated, based on 1) the GPA of the degree studies, 2) number of credits completed for the degree, 3) language skills for the country in question and 4) the suitability of the former studies to the exchange destination. If, after that, no difference is indicated between the applicants, the decision will be made by lottery.
Language skills If you are planning to choose universities, where the language of instruction is other than English, you must be able to show your ability to follow instruction in this language. Evaluation of language skills is based on Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) (levels A1-A2-B1-B2-C1-C2). The minimum required level in the language of instruction is B1. If you have completed the language studies outside of Aalto University, please provide us documentation to proof the CEFR level of language skills. THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK
The Common European Framework divides learners into three broad divisions which can be divided into six levels:

The CEFR describes what a learner is supposed to be able to do in reading, listening, speaking and writing at each level, in details:

Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce himself/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
A2
Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.
B1
Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst traveling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
B2
Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
C1
Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
C2
Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarize information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.
These descriptors can apply to any of the languages spoken in Europe, and there are translations in many languages

3. Application procedure
There are two possible ways to organize your study abroad period. One is to let Aalto Mikkeli place you in one of the partner universities of the BScBA program. The other is to handle it by yourself. There is no middle ground. Even though the exchange period is integral part of the degree, it is possible to get exemption from completing it with legitimate reasons. Student, who has a good reason for the exemption, needs to request it before the exchange process is started, at latest by the end of August after the first year of studies.
Aalto Mikkeli Exchange Program
Aalto Mikkeli has formal agreements with the universities listed in this document. Before the final decisions are made, the correspondence with these universities must go the official way: only through the Mikkeli study office. During the admission process do not contact these universities on your own. The exemptions for this rule are the universities, which are using online application systems. If you intend to let Aalto Mikkeli arrange your foreign study period, we will ask you to list your choices (10) for universities in order of preference. Aalto Mikkeli will do its best to place you in one of these if possible. It is likely that the demand for certain universities may be higher than the number of places. We would like to remind you that since our exchange agreements are based on ongoing negotiation, the number of places or whether a university accepts students from us could still change.
Freemover Exchange If you wish to apply for other universities than for our partner universities, you must get the application forms and information yourself. You can ask for the application forms from the Admissions Office of each university. Remember to consult our office before you do anything as there might be some useful information or contacts. Also remember that Aalto Mikkeli must approve the university. It is not possible to apply to a freemover exchange to a partner university of any Aalto University’s schools, no matter if their cooperation with the foreign university is at the BSc. or MSc. level. The university you are planning to join as a free mover must fill the quality requirements set by Aalto University School of Business. When entering a university as a free mover, you must take part in the normal degree studies, not for example participate in a separate program designed only for exchange students. The university must have at least one of the international accreditations which Aalto University School of Business has (AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA) or be listed on an internationally known ranking list (FT Ranking, U.S. News Ranking, Shanghai Ranking, or similar). We send to our partner universities only the applications of the students who seriously plan to go there, if they are accepted. We will not use the partner universities as back up for those who have applied for other universities as well.

4. Admission criteria for the foreign universities
All the universities abroad have their own admission requirements, which students must meet. Admission criteria might consist of
1. English language (TEOFL, IELTS, etc.) test and the information on the requirements can be found from the list of universities.
2. Ranking/GPA of the courses completed in Aalto Mikkeli. The universities may also require the following:
1. Translations of all your certificates and other documents. 2. Statement of financial means. Even if your university does not require this,
immigration officers usually do. You have to be able to show that you have enough funds to cover all the expenses during the semester. The more detailed the statement is, the better. US universities generally require a statement from your bank showing sufficient means of support and a statement showing the total study grant from Aalto Mikkeli.
3. A health certificate. 4. Application fee. This sum is non-refundable and covers the expenses of processing
your application.
5. Fees You do not need to pay tuition fees in any of our exchange universities. However, in some universities, especially in the USA, you need to pay the general fees which are related to the courses, credits, computer issues, etc. Information on these costs can be found from the websites of the universities and from the Student Exchange Coordinator. Some universities also have a mandatory insurance, which the students need to purchase. Information on this can be found from the list of the partner universities.
6. Housing
You need to arrange the housing by yourself. However, most of the universities help you with these arrangements. The information on the housing and possible application forms for housing will be provided by the host university.
It is important that you start to look for the accommodation as soon as you have got the instructions from the host university! In some places, the accommodation situation is demanding (especially in the fall semester) and the earlier you start the search, the better changes you have for getting the accommodation.

7. Courses
You can choose the topics fairly freely. We only set two requirements:
1. You have not taken the course with similar content before. 2. You take the amount and level of courses required in the foreign university during one
semester. It is your own responsibility to meet the prerequisites set by your host university.
a. In European universities using ECTS system, you need to do the minimum of 30 ECTS credits.
b. In universities with other than ECTS credit system, you have to do the equivalent amount of credits (30 ECTS). Please see the information on credits with each university from the list or their website.
c. In the schools following the US standards you should take 3rd and 4th year courses only.
Students must complete 30 credits (ECTS) during the study abroad period. A minimum of 24 of the study abroad credits must be in the field of business, economics or languages (max. 6 ECTS). Language studies can be accepted, if you have not studied the same language for your degree in the Aalto University School of Business. Six (6) of the study abroad ECTS credits may be in humanities, social sciences or related areas that focus on historical, cultural, political or sociological studies. Keep in mind the Master’s Programs requirements when choosing the courses at exchange. The courses done during the Study Abroad form the Minor Subject Studies of the BScBA degree (30 ECTS). The courses are registered for the Aalto University School of Business student register and to the transcript course by course. Instructions and link to the online system can be found from Into: https://into.aalto.fi/display/enbscba/Credit+Transfer. Courses are graded as pass or fail and they do not enter into students cumulative GPA.
You have to get acceptance from Mikkeli beforehand for the courses you plan to attend. Send your study plan and course descriptions in English by using the Study Plan for Study Abroad form by e-mail to Mari Syväoja, [email protected]. The form can be found from Into: https://into.aalto.fi/display/enbscba/BScBA+Students+Studying+Abroad. Please leave at least a week for the staff to process your study plan. Note! Keep in mind also that in summertime, the processing time can be longer due to the vacations.
In case there will later be changes to your courses, please, remember to send the updated study plan for approval.
8. Study abroad report and evaluation
After the study abroad, students need to submit a report and an evaluation on their experience. The information on the report and evaluation is available on Into: https://into.aalto.fi/display/enbscba/BScBA+Students+Studying+Abroad.
In the report, you should tell about the university in general, courses you completed, housing, traveling etc. Most importantly give useful information for the next students going there.
The study abroad evaluation is an online questionnaire. Each student will get an e-mail to their Aalto e-mail address with the link to the questionnaire.

9. Aalto university study grant for study abroad
All the BScBA students, who are going for an exchange, will get the Aalto University study abroad grant for study abroad. Aalto Mikkeli requirements for the grant are: 1. During the application process all the required documents and attachments have been
returned by the given deadline to the Student Exchange Coordinator. 2. Student has completed the required amount of credits during the study abroad period
according to the approved Study Plan for Study Abroad. 3. After the study abroad period student has returned the Study Abroad Report and completed
the online evaluation. 4. Erasmus students have completed all the required processes (see below for details). First part of the Aalto grant will be paid approximately one month before the study abroad period starts and the second part after the study abroad period, when we have received the official transcript from the exchange university, the Study Abroad Report has been returned, and the online evaluation is completed. The grant payments for the Erasmus+ exchange are different and the information on Erasmus + payments is described below.
Erasmus+ Exchange Requirements Students going to a European university for Erasmus+ exchange will have additional requirements and processes: 1. Erasmus Letter of Confirmation:
• Students on Erasmus exchange have to submit Erasmus+ Letter of Confirmation after their exchange with a starting and ending dates of the exchange. The minimum length of Erasmus+ exchange is 3 months. The form has to be signed by the coordinator of the exchange university and returned to the Student Exchange Coordinator when you have finished your exchange period.
2. Signed Learning Agreement: • Learning agreement form with the possible changes on it (signatures of the host
university included) has to be returned to Student Exchange Coordinator. 3. Erasmus+ OLS Language Assessment:
• All students going on exchange through Erasmus+ programme have to complete online language test before and after the exchange. The test is a mandatory part of the Erasmus programme. The link to the test will be send to your Aalto e-mail.
• Students, who get C2 from the first language test, do NOT need to retake the test after the exchange.
• The link to the test is sent before the exchange and the second test will come automatically according to the defined ending date of the exchange.
• Both tests have to be completed before the second part of the scholarship can be paid. 4. EU Survey/Participant report:
• Students on Erasmus exchange have to fill out EU Survey after the exchange. This is an electronic feedback form which is sent automatically by Commission to all Erasmus+ students after the exchange. The e-mail will be send to your Aalto e-mail.
5. The Erasmus+ -grant is paid to you as part of the Aalto University Study Abroad Scholarship. • The second installment of the scholarship will be paid out when the student fulfills the
requirements set for the exchange, i.e. submits all the requested documents and completes the required number of credits.
• Destination countries in the Erasmus+ programme have been divided into the following groups (grant amount is for the academic year 2020-2021):

1. Country group 1 (Denmark, Iceland, Ireland, Luxemburg, Sweden, Liechtenstein, Norway), grant: 470 euro/month (30 days).
2. Country group 2 (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, the Republic of Northern Macedonia, Turkey), grant: 420 euro/month (30 days).

10. BScBA Ambassador Program The BScBA Ambassador Program is designed to increase the visibility of our high-quality university program, and its main goal is to spread the word about Aalto University and the BScBA Program among potential degree and exchange students abroad. As a BScBA Ambassador you can promote our program during your study abroad period by giving a presentation in a local high school. The role of a BScBA Ambassador?
• Give presentations at local high schools during your exchange to promote Aalto University and the BScBA Program
What do we offer to you?
• 100€ compensation for each presentation in different high schools • 20 € compensation for each additional presentation held on a same day in the same
high school to the different group of students. You can apply to be an ambassador before your exchange or during your exchange. The Ambassadors are expected to arrange the presentation time with the high school. However, the BScBA Staff can assist finding schools in the region and contact the staff beforehand, if needed.
