Why are you having a party?Party, animals, having fun

De Vier Windstreken is celebrating because Ingrid

and Dieter Schubert have illustrated a De Vier

Windstreken picture book for the very first time!

Their comical illustrations in cheerful colours always

make us smile. And they happen to fit perfectly with

Monique Berndes’ playful text.

Squirrel invites everyone to a party because he’s had

a good day. The other animals in the forest think

that’s rather odd. Is that really a good reason for

having a party? Owl certainly thinks so: “Everything

that makes you happy is a good reason for a party.”

Because all the animals can think of their own

reasons, a lot of parties are planned that night. But

who’s left to come to them?Always a reason for a partyIngrid & Dieter Schubert (illustrations)Monique Berndes (text)

Ingrid & Dieter Schubert (Amsterdam) have been making picture books and books of bedtime stories together for over thirty years. For each new book they create new heroes loved by both younger and older readers. And that is why a lot of their books, such as Little big feet, Wild Will and The tiny mouse have been translated into other languages.

Monique Berndes (Watervliet BE, born in Hengelo) takes care of her five children ánd demented elderly. To relax herself she writes children’s books which contain a lot of humour and just the right amount of tension. There’s always a reason for a party is the first picture book she has written.

Explorers aren’t afraid of waterAnimals, facing challenges, farm

Ever heard of a sea pig or a sea mouse? Or a sea cow?

You haven’t? Well, they are real! Dog has even met

his very very very distant cousin, the seal. He tells his

friends all about it.

If farm animals live in the sea, there has to be a sea

chicken too, Chicken thinks excitedly. She makes

herself a diving suit and goes on a search.

Chicken doesn’t find a sea chicken, but she does find

a flying fish without a name. And it just so happens

that this fish would love to be her sea chicken!

An original and funny story by Joke Eikenaar, about

a chicken who wants to prove to her friends that

the sea chicken does in fact exist. The water colour

illustrations with shifting perspectives

make for a cheery look and feel.

Joke Eikenaar (Zwolle) has been writing and drawing since she was a little girl, but for several years her career led her down a different path. She found her true passion when she got the chance to illustrate special education school books in 1999. Nowadays she’s also writing a lot again. Searching for the sea chicken is the second picture book of which Joke is both author and illustrator.

Carl knows all there is to know about adventures.

But to join them, that wasn’t his thing. That’s why no

one wants to join his birthday theme: even though

it will be a monster party, all his class mates think

it will be boring. And indeed, when the party has

started, it’s more cosy than scary. Until a stranger is

An ode to all grandmothersGetting older, taking care of each other, changes

Illustrator Helen van Vliet has always been crazy

about her grandmothers. She loved visiting, playing

games and making things with them. And so the first

picture book she illustrated and wrote had to be an

ode to all grandmothers.

Lena & Lily shows us several scenes from the life of a

grandmother and her grandchild. As they both grow

older, their relationship changes: at first the child

is dependent upon the grandchild, and later it’s the

other way around. What doesn’t change, is their love

for one another.

A touching, personal story by Helen van Vliet,

relatable for many.

It’s sometimes hard for children to think about

where someone has gone after they’ve died.

Little hedgehog Jerry still thinks a lot about his

father, who ‘disappeared into the traffic’. In the

cross the dangerous road. On the other side he

Down syndrome, love

Once upon a time there were two royal children.

They were so very sweet. They had a throne, a crown,

a golden bed.

Sometimes they’d start to laugh. All of a sudden.

Their laugh wasn’t just any old laugh. But a genuine

burst of laughter. Anyone who heard them would have

no choice but to join in.

They were special. Just that. A miracle. These two royal

children.

Look, the bird is singing, the first book of Bente Jonker

The text evoked compassion, the illustrations

brought colour en brightness to the story of a little

Beginning of 2012 author and illustrator Coby

Hol has passed away, at the age of 68. To honour

her and her work, The smile of the princess is now

published, a very special book which she made just

before she died.

In this fairytale the princess had a very beautiful

smile. Everyone who saw it for just a moment,

became immediately happy. One day the princess

got captured by a ferocious dragon. Nobody

managed to rescue her and all the happiness

disappeared out of the country. Fortunately a brave

sailor came along and saved her with his magical

dagger. Everyone smiled again when he came back

with her! The sailor received lots of presents from

the sultan, but the one from the princess he loved

most: she smiled, just at him.

Coby Hol’s studied free drawing and painting at the Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag. After that she’s teached handicraft for 25 years. Since 1989 she’s written and illustrated over thirty books, which were published in more than ten languages. Coby has become well-known for her collages of teared or cut paper, and sometimes fabrics. Fun to read and knitCuddling, knitting

Jacob the knitted monkey loves to cuddle, while

his sister Frannie prefers to dance around with the

bunny twins. When they find a little mouse that

hasn’t been finished, they know exactly what to do:

find a pair of human hands to bring it to life!

The hands they need could belong to a mother or

a grandmother. Using the knitting pattern in the

back of the book, they can knit the little mouse

themselves. And by doing so, make Jacob’s story

come alive.

• The photos of the knitted cuddly toys make for a unique picture book

The sun, the sea… vacation!

Vacation, fear of the unknown

Going on vacation is often a lot of fun, but it can be

a bit scary when you’re a toddler. Things aren’t as

they are at home: the cat can’t come, you have to

sit in the car for a long time and there’s a lot more

water in the sea than there’s in the bath tub. So

what do you do?

With this lift-the-flap book parents can prepare

their child for new situations. You can make sure

you say goodbye to the cat, stop on the way for

a pick nick, and sit on dad’s shoulders. It won’t be

half as scary that way!

Figuren van Jeroen Bosch komen tot levenThema’s: fantasie, liefde, kunst

In 2016 is het vijfhonderd jaar geleden dat Jeroen

Bosch, Nederlands beroemdste kunstenaar uit de

middeleeuwen, is overleden. Dit wordt herdacht

met een internationale manifestatie en een landelijk

themajaar vol activiteiten, met als hoogtepunt de

overzichtstentoonstelling in het Noordbrabants

Museum (13 februari t/m 8 mei 2016).

“Hooray, I can read” for older children

The books in the “Hooray, I can read” series are highly

appreciated because of the font that is also suitable

for dyslexic children and all the colourful artwork.

With Escape we introduce the “Hooray, I can read*”

series (with a star), especially meant for children

in the last years of primary school who still have a

problem with reading. In the books in this series

the main character is a bit older than usual, and the

subject connects with the experience of the readers.

In the middle of the night the phone is ringing.

She knows what that means.

She has to run, again.

She runs into the dark night.

The next day Anna falls asleep in class.

Her teacher wants to know what’s up.

Bur she can’t tell, never.

It’s a big secret.

Anna’s dad is drunk once in a while and threatens her

mother then. Anna wants him to stop, but she can’t

do that alone. And she can tell no one, can she?
