The New Rules Of Resolution… “IT’S A PROCESS… NOT A PROJECT!” Last Sunday we began an exciting new series called “The new Rules of Resolution,” with the important message that as we embrace the changes we need to make, that we realize the transformation experience is one that we realize, “It’s A Process Not A Project.”

And we began by looking at the primary scriptures we will study over the next 5 weeks from Colossians 2:6,7,8: 6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives

in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual

forces of this world rather than on Christ. The first of these verses speaks to our salvation itself, and the ongoing process that occurs through discipleship. St. Paul says, “Just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in Him…” This reminds us of the truth that even as our salvation is a work of God’s grace, so is the ongoing change that occurs through our growth in discipleship. At every important juncture of our spiritual lives, we need to be reminded that ultimately we are each and all nothing more, “Than a case for grace!” As we journey along the road of discipleship and following Jesus, we must also always remember that we do so in His strength and by His grace. This can be a challenge especially when he process seems delayed, or not happening in the manner or as soon as we think it should. We were reminded by the words of former POW Admiral Jim Stockdale of the following truth:

“You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end, which you can never afford to lose, with the discipline to confront the most brutal

facts of your current reality, whatever they might be."

Beloved, we are blessed to know the end of the story… Jesus Christ prevails, and we are ultimately victorious over all. But with each intervening moment and step along the way, we must persevere and press on through the challenges by walking in faith and keeping our eyes on the prize which is our calling in Christ! As we begin this New Year and this new series, I believe God has destined all for the greatest joy and miracles we have ever experienced!

Living Free From Fear Is it possible to live free from fear in this dangerous, fear-filled and unpredictable world? Yes, it most definitely is, because protection is a solid promise of God. But it's not a promise that's offered to just anyone. It is promised to those who abide in the Lord. Psalm 91 says, "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress.'" To abide means to dwell, to remain and to continue. To abide in the shadow of the Almighty is to live in continual union with Him, keeping His Word and obeying His voice. Those who abide in the Lord can live without dread of what the devil will do. God's promise of protection doesn't guarantee that the devil will leave you alone. Christian security is not absence of danger, but presence of God! It means that God will give you a way of escape every time the devil rears his ugly face at you. "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way

out so that you can stand up under it." (1 Corinthians 10:13) If you are afraid of the dangers around you, spend more time in the Word and in prayer until your trust in God overcomes your fear. Draw closer to the Lord until you are abiding in the shadow of the Almighty. "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you." (James 4:7-8) No matter how dangerous your situation becomes, He surely shall deliver you! You can live free from fear! 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us that "God has not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, love, and a sound mind." When you feel fear creeping into your life – just remember this truth. Fear is faith in reverse! It has the same power as faith to create the negative things in your life as faith does in creating the positive and hopeful things you were intended to experience. When confronted with fear, you can turn the soul switch on to the Word of God and choose faith! God has promised never to leave or forsake you. With that reality in mind – what possibly could harm you? Always remember the words of the Apostle John…

“Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world!”

How to Change Your Mind... for Good

“As a man thinks in his heart, so is he…”

Recent studies by leading neuroscientists have shed great new light on the mind. The human mind thinks up to 60,000 thoughts each day. Most thinking is done on autopilot with the mind thinking the same habitual thoughts over and over again. If it seems like you're hash-ing out the same mental routine each day, there's a good chance you are. The brain protects its storehouse of information – be it good or bad. Engrained habits are protected so the autopilot lifestyle can be maintained. But when we've repeated a new thought or practiced a new behavior for about 90 days, it becomes part of the brain architecture; voila, we have new hardwiring! The good news is that we CAN change the way we think. After that, those new – and improved – redemptive thoughts become habit. A new lifestyle can become the new norm. The Bible says we can challenge false thoughts by "taking every thought captive" – and then we will see a redemptive life follow. By thinking on what is true we overcome low self-esteem, fear and doubt. We can also have what the Bible calls "the mind of Christ." Here is a wonderful revelation to consider. Because those lies of low self-esteem, fear and doubt don't exist in the mind of God, we can think "as if" we are healthy and whole and soon our bodies and spirits show new vitality. This is a great day to call those stubborn false thoughts by name, write them down and then tear them down. Replace them with noble thoughts, admirable thoughts, thoughts of excellence and allow your new, bigger thought life to open the door to a grander world. Where do you start? Philippians 4:8 gives you a good place –

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think

about such things."

Walking by Faith When veteran high-wire performer Nik Wallenda took his first step on a wire stretched above Niagara Falls in 2012, he was walking by faith. The same was true the next year when he walked on a wire high above a Grand Canyon gorge. When asked about fear, Wallenda has said, “I would say the only thing I fear is God.” Walking by faith in any arena of life requires confidence in something. Besides confidence in God, Wallenda has faith in his skills, training, and equipment. Still, there are no guarantees. Walking by faith means taking steps in the direction God has indicated, trusting that He will be faithful to guide and provide. “For we walk by faith [we regulate our lives and conduct ourselves by our conviction or belief re-specting man’s relationship to God and divine things, with trust and holy fervor; thus we walk]

not by sight or appearance.” – 2 Corinthians 5:7 (AMP)

The Last Impression... Sitting on the side of the interstate highway near Rocky Gap, waiting to catch speeding drivers, a Maryland State Police Officer saw an eastbound car puttering along at 40 MPH. He thought to himself, “This driver is just as dangerous as a speeder!” So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over. Approaching the car, he noticed that there were five elderly ladies – two in the front seat and three in the back – wide-eyed and white as ghosts. The driver,

obviously confused, said to him, “Officer, I don’t understand, I was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem?” “Ma’am,” the officer replies, “you weren’t speeding, but you should know that driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger to other drivers.” “Slower than the speed limit? No sir, I was doing the speed limit exactly... forty miles an hour!” the woman said, a bit proudly. The State Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle explained to her that the “40” sign was the route number, not the speed limit. “This is Route 40 and I-68!” A bit embarrassed, the woman grinned and thanked the officer for pointing out her error. “But before I let you go, Ma’am, I have to ask... is everyone in this car OK? These women seem awfully shaken and they haven’t muttered a single peep this whole time,” the officer asked with concern. “Oh, they’ll be all right in a minute officer. We just got off Route 220!”

Are We “Aquarium-Keepers” Or “Fishers Of Men”?

People ask me all the time how we’ve been able to see so many people come to Christ in five years. Outside of the favor of God, I could give a lot of specifics. Tell you a lot of things that we’ve done. But none of it will help you until you make a decision we made in the early days of our church. And that was the decision to be more

focused on the people we’re trying to reach than on the people we’re trying to keep. As others have said, to be fishers of men, not just keepers of the aquarium.

We’re not going to cater to the personal preferences of the few in our pursuit of the salvation of the many. And that includes if the few is 10 people when we’re pursuing 100. Or 5,000 when we’re pursuing 10,00. Or 10,000 when we’re pursuing 20,000.

Most people and churches aren’t willing to do that. They’re keepers of the aquarium. They say they want to reach people, but in reality they’re more focused on preservation than expansion. On keeping people rather than reaching them. They let saved people dictate style. Saved people dictate focus. Saved people dictate vision. The result is a room full of saved people. Not people getting saved. Why? Because the people you’re trying to reach aren’t interested in the church that has been created by the people you’re trying to keep. If they were, they’d be coming. But they’re not.

Right here is where people usually play the discipleship card. They’re trying to disciple the people they’re trying to keep. They accuse you of pitting evangelism against discipleship.

But that isn’t the case. I just believe true disciples should care more about making disciples than freeze-framing the church the way it was when they became one. Or wanting 26 programs customized to their liking. If the mark of Christian maturity is a bunch of people who want to create a museum glorifying and preserving their personal preferences and then sanctify it by calling it a church, count me out.

Some people say, why can’t we have both? You can. Focus on the people you want to reach and you’ll keep the people you want to keep. Let the rest walk. They’ll find a church elsewhere to graze. The way I see it is they’re just occupying the space of a person who needs to hear the gospel. You’ll fill their seat. And it will be with the person who needs it the most.

The Rich Landowner and The Farmer Tenant A rich landowner named Carl often rode around his vast estate so he could congratulate himself on his great wealth. One day, while riding around his estate on his favorite horse, he saw Hans, an old tenant farmer. Hans was sitting under a tree when Carl rode by. Hans said, “I was just thanking God for my food.”

Carl protested, “If that is all I had to eat I wouldn’t feel like giving thanks.” Hans replied, “God has given me everything I need, and I am thankful for it.” The old farmer added, “It is strange you should come by today because I had a dream last night. In my dream a voice told me, ’the richest man in the valley will die tonight.’ I don’t know what it means, but I thought I ought to tell you.” Carl snorted, “Dreams are nonsense,” and galloped away, but he could not forget Hans’ words: “The richest man in the valley will die tonight.” He was obviously the richest man in the valley, so he invited his doctor to his house that evening. Carl told the doctor what Hans had said. After a thorough examination, the doctor told the wealthy landowner, “Carl, you are as strong and healthy as a horse. There is no way you are going to die tonight.” Nevertheless, for assurance, the doctor stayed with Carl, and they played cards through the night. The doctor left the next morning and Carl apologized for becoming so upset over the old man’s dream. At about nine o'clock, a messenger arrived at Carl’s door. “What is it?” Carl demanded. The messenger explained, “It’s about old Hans. He died last night in his sleep.” Like Hans, believers are the richest people on earth. Our wealth may not be evident to the world, or even to us fully. Nevertheless, I am certain that this is what the Apostle Paul understood when he wrote, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessing in heavenly places in Christ.” (Ephesians 1:3) How about you? If you are a believer you are a child of the King, a joint heir with Christ Jesus! How different life can be when we live from this perspective and strive to reach for this potential. The secret to living in this reality is really quite simple. Be sure to give God thanks for the wealth He has given you – for you are the richest person in the valley!

Flu Season

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the

authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. – Ephesians 6:10-12

During the winter months, sales of vitamin C and Echinacea go up as people

prepare to battle the flu. Pharmacies and doctors’ offices offer vaccinations to increase immunity to these pesky viruses. Resources for fighting the flu include making sure your immune system has a boost with extra vitamins, taking precautionary measures of flu shots, avoiding people who are sick, washing your hands, and getting plenty of rest. Throughout the Bible, differences are noted between the worldly and the spiritual. There is worldly wealth versus spiritual wealth, worldly teaching versus spiritual teaching, and worldly health versus spiritual health. Ephesians Chapter 6 addresses the issue of spiritual health. The Apostle Paul urges believers to build up their spiritual immune system so they are prepared to step into spiritual battle. The Bible offers resources to make sure each person is spiritually strong. What is your strategy to combat a spiritual virus? What is your plan to be spiritually healthy and not weakened by a spiritual flu? In the same way you work to stay physically healthy, you must take steps and measures to remain spiritually healthy. Equip yourself with truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, the Word of God, and prayer. You don't only need one or two of these protections to keep yourself spiritually healthy. You need them all. These are spiritual disciplines that can help you to become spiritually strong. You must put on the full armor of God. Some of these disciplines are solitude, prayer, obedience, Bible study, confession, generosity, serving, and worship. What are you doing to live a spiritually healthy lifestyle? How can you make sure you are staying healthy during every season of your life? Don't be surprised when spiritual battles come; be ready. For the important battle is not against the worldly forces, but the spiritual ones. As we each have been called to be part of God’s army, let us always be ready to march, move ready and be prepared for battle when the trumpet sounds. The victory is already ours because the battle is the Lords!
