The Prefix:
The 1st digit indicates the decade
Prefix Base Suffix
B = 1950-1959
C = 1960-1969
D = 1970-1979
E = 1980-1989
F = 1990-1999
Y=2000
1=2001, 2 = 2002, 3 = 2003 and so on
The 2nd digit indicates the year of that decade
2000 and up the second and the third digits are the car line
(ex. L2 = Expedition)
The 3rd digit indicates the car line for 1999 and older, these
have changed over the years, here are some.
A = Ford
D = Falcon
G = Comet, Montego, Cyclone
J = Marine & Industrial
M = Mercury
O = Fairlane & Torino
S= Thunderbird
T = Truck
V = Lincoln
W = Cougar
Z= Mustang
The 4th digit indicates:
The Engineering Group on engineering part numbers
A = Chassis Group
B=Body Group
E=Engine Group
The Division Group on service part numbers
Z=Ford Division
Y=Lincoln-Mercury
X=Original Ford Muscle Parts Program
M =Ford Motorsports SVO or Ford-Mexico
The Base Number:
The four or five digit numerical or alphanumerical in the middle
is the base number. It tells you what the basic part is. Example,
6015 is cylinder head, 9510 is carburetor, 7000 is auto
transmission. Odd numbers used for left side and even number used
for right side parts.
The Suffix:
The suffix indicates the revision under the part number:
A =Original part
B=First revision
C=Second revision and so on
AA, AB, ZZ or ABC indicate multiple revisions
