NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the National Book Award–winning author of Stamped from the Beginning comes a “groundbreaking” (Time) ap-proach to understanding and up-rooting racism and inequality in our society—and in ourselves.

“This is an essential work for anyone who wants to go beyond the awareness of racism to the next step: contributing to the formation of a just and equitable society.”

This small group discussion is facilitated by Pastor Melissa Fisher and James Williams, Ministry Assistant on Wednesday evenings at Faith UMC. Sign up to participate on the sheet in the Fellowship Hall.

Race relations book club

youth sunday...

On 5th Sundays the youth of Faith UMC are front and center. Please save the date of Sunday, March 29 to support our young people as they learn how to work within the church in vari-ous roles. Past youth Sundays have featured inspired guest speakers, performances by the liturgical dance troupe and youth taking charge as ushers, greeters and liturgist. Don’t miss it!

ft. wayne naacp census sunday… Sheila Curry-Campbell, President of Fort Wayne’s local NAACP Branch 3049, is in-viting churches, especially those in underserved areas of the city, to partner with them on a 2020 census outreach project. The project, Census Sunday, is scheduled for May

29th. The purpose of the event is to encourage and assist residents within the church ’s zip code to complete the 2020 census. Prior to Census Sunday, outreach to church neighborhoods to advise residents of the free as-sistance is planned. Why is this initiative important? To ensure underserved neighborhoods are accurately counted so funding and resources based on same are allocated correctly. This process is initiated when the Census Bureau delivers apportionment counts to the President and Congress as required by law. In addition, the Cen-sus Bureau will send redistricting counts to states. This information is used to redraw legislative districts based on pop-ulation changes. Further details on Census Sunday will be provided soon. In the meantime, here ’s the census timeline courtesy of: https://2020census.gov/en/important-dates.html.

• January 21: The U.S. Census Bureau starts counting the population in remote Alaska. The count officially begins in the rural Alaskan village of Toksook Bay.

• March 12 - 20: Households will begin receiving official Census Bureau mail with detailed information on how to respond to

the 2020 Census online, by phone, or by mail. • March 30 - April 1: The Census Bureau will count people who are experiencing homelessness over these three days. As part

of this process, the Census Bureau counts people in shelters, at soup kitchens and mobile food vans, on the streets, and at non-sheltered, outdoor locations such as tent encampments.

• April 1: Census Day is observed nationwide. By this date, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020

Census. Once the invitation arrives, you should respond for your home in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail. When you respond to the census, you'll tell the Census Bureau where you live as of April 1, 2020.

• April: Census takers will begin visiting college students who live on campus, people living in senior centers, and others who live among large groups of people. Census takers also begin conducting quality check interviews to help ensure an accurate count.

• May - July: Census takers will begin visiting homes that haven't responded to the 2020 Census to help make sure everyone is counted.

• December: The Census Bureau will deliver apportionment counts to the President and Congress as required by law.

2021

• March 31: By this date, the Census Bureau will send redistricting counts to states. This information is used to redraw legisla-

tive districts based on population changes.

EASTER FLOWERS It’s almost time to order potted spring flowers to adorn the altar on Easter Sunday. For those who are new to Faith UMC, the flowers create a beautiful display for the congre-gation to enjoy while celebrating the resurrection of our Lord and Savior during worship service. Afterword, anyone who ordered flowers will pick them up from the altar and take them home. Order forms will be made available in the service bulletins soon. Choose from lilies, tulips, daffodils or hyacinths at $8.00 per potted plant. Orders and payment must be received no later than Sunday, April 5th. Please make checks payable to Faith UMC and indicate “Easter Flowers” on the notation line.

services SAVE THE DATES: Faith UMC will hold evening worship services on Maundy Thursday, April 9th, and Good Friday, April 10th at 6 pm.

EASTER BREAKFAST The annual Easter breakfast prepared by the men of Faith UMC will com-mence at 8:00 am on April 12th. Start your day with a time of fellowship and food before the Easter egg hunt and worship service. If you would like to assist with the breakfast, please see Tom Bice or email the church office at [email protected].

EASTER EGG HUNT Last year Faith UMC held an Easter egg hunt within the lower level of the church and the children and their families had a wonderful time. This year we’re inviting the LaRez community to this event as part of being a missional church. If you would like to help with this event by shopping for the eggs and candy, helping to hide the eggs and/or helping to oversee the event on Easter Sunday morning, there will be a sign-up sheet in the Fellowship Hall.

SPOTLIGHT Spotlight is a new Q & A feature designed to help us get to know our Faith Church family. The spotlight is on Breanna Johnson!

Name something people would be surprised to learn about you? I have watched and re-watched all 9 seasons of “the office” and know most of the episodes word-for-word.

At which store would you like to max-out your credit card? I would max out my credit card at Walmart because I shop there a lot already and they have

pretty much everything!

Choose a movie title for the story of your life? Dazed & Confused: Life in my Early 20’s.

What's your role at Faith UMC and how did you wind up here? I am a member of Faith’s Outreach Committee, I help in the nursery every first Sunday and I teach the older kids’ Sunday School class every third Sunday. I was asked by Pastor Melissa if I would be interested in all 3 positions after coming back home from graduation and I felt called by God to step into every position. (Editor’s note: Breanna was also a key volunteer during VBS last summer teach-ing the handbells class and leading the participants in their performance at the VBS finale.)

If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose? I would choose the power of flight so that I could save on gas and travel expenses!

What are your hobbies? My hobbies include: writing poetry, reading poetry, enjoying good coffee, and unofficially critiquing Netflix movies and shows.

Who do you find inspiring? I admire my (paternal) grand-mother the most because of her in-credible strength and positive spirit. I find poet Rupi Kaur inspiring as well because of her willingness to sit in anxiety and be vulnerable with the world.

Favorite gospel song? My absolute favorite gospel song is “Take Me to the King” by Tamela Mann.

Name three things still left on your bucket list? 1) Travel the world for an entire year, 2) Publish my own poetry book, 3) Diminish the stigma surrounding mental illness in communities of color, especially the Black community.

What's your life philosophy? “Empathy is your greatest weapon against hatred and conflict. Use it in every one of life’s battles.”

The Purdue grad strikes a pose.

Breanna flashes a Cover Girl smile.

Breanna assists “Whoosh - Take Flight Where God Leads You” Vacation Bible School participants with a dance performance during the VBS 2019 program for families, friends and the congregation.

SPOTLIGHT Spotlight is a new Q & A feature designed to help us get to know our Faith Church family. The spotlight is on Becky Fisher!

Name something people would be surprised to learn about you? I used to be a legal secretary. Something else many don't know about me is that I was church secretary at Faith for several years over 40 years ago!

At which store would you like to max-out your credit card? Target. Kohl's is a close second.

Choose a movie title for the story of your life? “Christmas Vacation.” Things tend to get messed up, but hopefully have a good ending!

What's your role at Faith UMC and how did you wind up here? I am at Faith U.M.C. to serve others. I am here because my daughter, Melissa, is the pastor here. (Editor’s note: Becky serves as a chil-dren’s Sunday School teacher, helps with various youth activi-ties including lock-in’s, VBS, Christmas Eve Nativity and spe-cial behind the scenes projects such as cleaning and organizing the youth room.)

If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose? I think I would like to see into the future, but probably would

end up not liking it, if I could.

What are your hobbies? One of my hobbies is traveling. I will be traveling to perform at

Carnegie Hall this fall with the St. Joe U.M.C. Choir. We will be directed by composer Joseph Martin and be part of a 300 voice choir and accompanied by a 100 piece orchestra. I will also be traveling to Colorado with my daughter, Melissa, in July. In the past, my daughters and I traveled to Ireland, Scotland, and Liverpool-a trip of a lifetime! (Editor’s note: If you’d like to help Becky travel to Carnegie Hall, please see her for details about fundraisers St. Joe UMC is hosting to underwrite this historic musical journey.)

Who do you find inspiring? There are so many people that inspire me, but those working to serve others in any ca-pacity and those who bring joy to others are a great inspiration. Also, my patients who are working on vision therapy that work so hard to achieve their goals to improve their vision.

Favorite gospel song? Swing Low Sweet Chariot.

Name three things still left on your bucket list? Visit Israel, Hawaii, Greece, Italy and Alaska. (Oops! That's too many!)

What's your life philosophy? Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own under-standing; In all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.

Becky shares a cuddle with new granddaughter Vida.

Becky relaxes on a boat outing.

Meet Becky’s family from far left clockwise including daughters, son-in-law, son, granddaughter and spouse: Amy and her husband Corey, Pastor Melissa, Andy, Kaitlin, Becky and husband Mark.

A big thank you to everybody in the church who helped donate over the last few years. Thanks to you we have done 22 projects to keep the church up and running. Thanks to our loyal mem-bers we were able to do these projects and pay for them. We owe absolutely nothing for these projects. If you want a list of these projects that were done just see me, Tom Bice, and I will get it for you. The only thing left is the tuck point on the out-side of the church to be done when weather gets better. Again, thanks to all of you that made it all possible for us to be vibrant on the southside of our city. Yours in Christ, Tom Bice - Trustee Chair

tuckpointing…

Tuckpointing is the general process of removing old and deteriorated mortar from the joints of the building's bricks. You can tell that it's old by cracking, crumbling or general instability of the structure. Over time, mortar tends to deteriorate. Not only are cracked and deteriorating mortar joints unsightly, but they also diminish the integrity of the surface and can allow water to get behind the brick or block and cause major damage. You can avoid these problems by tuck-pointing the brick or block foundation, which means removing and replacing cracked or missing mortar. As Tom has advised, the tuck pointing will commence later this year when the weather allows. Please note we are in need of your pledges and continued support of the capital funds drive for this critical work as well as the parking lot project as detailed below.

capital funds drive status… If you have outstanding pledges, please submit your donations at your early convenience. If you have not made a pledge, it’s not too late. Pledge cards are available in the sanctuary or by asking an usher. Simply indicate your pledge amount on the card, place it in the offering and begin submitting your donations to defray the remaining balances on the above-referenced projects.

Tuck pointing (Work pending) Parking lot (Work completed) Cost of project: $53,400 Cost of project: $20,700 Contributions to date: $25,013 Contributions to date: $15,780

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Luke 6:38 (New International Version)

Housekeeping… Please help keep the sanctuary and fellowship hall clean as the church does not have a custodian. How? After worship clear away papers left in the pews such as bulletins or flyers for recycling. After coffee hour or any other time spent in the fellowship hall, clear your table of trash, place in the garbage and wipe the table top. Thank you for helping maintain the cleanliness and beauty of the house of the Lord.
