THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK FOR NEW THEATRE PRODUCERS 1

Welcome to Stage One’s Little Black Book, a unique referenceguide for aspiring commercial theatre producers.

Stage One is the charity dedicated to supporting producers, encouraging new productions and sustaining the future of highquality commercial theatre in Britain. The following pages take youthrough Stage One’s comprehensive programme which includesproduction investment and development opportunities for newproducers.

In 2010, Stage One launched the Start-Up Fund for NewProducers. In these times of uncertainty about public investment inthe arts, it is essential that the next generation of commercialproducers are identified, nurtured and financially supported. Therisks and costs for new producers setting up have risensubstantially. But without new producers, commercial theatre inthe UK will stagnate and eventually decline, as it is they who areultimately responsible for nearly all West End and regional touringproductions. Investment attracts investment. The Start-Up Fundheralds an era of enterprise, imagination and creative energy andis designed to launch the careers of the producers of tomorrow.

Supported by individuals and businesses with an interest in thefuture lifeblood of commercial theatre, the Start-Up Fund pushesthose with genuine talent, and gives them a material leg-up at thestart of their careers. In the opening year, the Start-Up Fund hasinvested in three outstanding entrepreneurs and there are morewaiting in the wings with exciting projects in the pipeline.

The Little Black Book for New Theatre Producers lists all thegenerous donors who have given their time and money to makethe Start-Up Fund happen. Stage One is incredibly grateful fortheir support, and looks forward to celebrating success stories withthem in years to come.

If you are a producer, please contact the companies in the LittleBlack Book – their advice, guidance and professionalism will helpsmooth the way for you. Good luck!
