The term water filter is universally used to describe many water filtration devices, including the Berkey systems. While the term can be an accurate description, the meaning when talking about water treatment standards is different.

All Berkey systems contain the Black Berkey Filter Element(s), which exceed the Water Purifier Standard, detailed in above chart. In fact, the Berkey Black Filter Elements far surpass the purification standard, and actually remove 99.9999999% of pathogenic bacteria, known as a log 9 reduction. This distinction is what makes Berkey systems the only certifiable gravity flow water Purification System.

Not only do the Black Berkey Elements far surpass the purification standard, they also last up to 10 times longer than the competition's filters! This is possible because each Black Berkey Element is cleanable. Cleaning the elements with an abrasive sponge (no soap or chemicals necessary) extends their lifespan to produce up to 3,000 gallons of purified drinking water, per filter, without the costly need of replacement. At $107 (MAP) per pair, that's less than two cents a gallon (107/6,000 = 0.017)!

Berkey Water Filters

Berkey water filter systems provide the ultimate in waterborne contamination removal. With the Berkey system, you are able to utilize almost any outside natural water source and transform it to the best tasting, purest, drinking water possible. The gravity filtration method, used in the Berkey system, is a simple natural process without the use of any chemicals.

The pore structure of the Black Berkey Element is so small that microscopic organisms are not physically able to pass through the filtration medium. To make this microscopic structure even more powerful ionic absorption is incorporated. This method adds an ionic charge that repels many other contaminants that would otherwise pass through the filter, including heavy metals and chemicals. This ability is built into the filters structure. All that needs to be done to restore the filter to like new condition, is clean it to remove the contaminants that are trapped on the outermost surface of the element.

The Black Berkey Filtration Elements have been tested at state- and EPA-accredited laboratories and far exceed EPA and ANSI/NSF (Std. 53) protocol. The Black Berkey filters have been tested by the University of Phoenix, Spectrum Labs, and the Department of Toxicology and Environmental Science at Louisiana University, and confirmed to remove, or greatly reduce the following contaminant categories:
