There will be approximately 1,000+ participates at this state conference to represent their schools and regions. A state competition of this magnitude requires funding, judges, prizes, promotion, and a lot of building space for leadership and skills events. Examples of expenses include: Opening Ceremony: $10,000; Busing: $6,500; Contestant Medals: $4,000; Supplies for over 100 contests: $20,000+; State Officer Reception: $30,000+; and Closing Ceremony: $10,000. SkillsUSA: Kentucky Fact SheetChampions at Work: 50 Years of Champions at WorkOverview: SkillsUSA Kentucky is a partnership of students, teachers, and

industry representatives working together to ensure Kentucky has a skilled workforce. It helps each student to excel. SkillsUSA Kentucky is a member of the SkillsUSA national organization serving teachers, and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled, and service occupations.

Mission: SkillsUSA Kentucky is an applied method of instruction for preparing Kentucky’s high performance workers enrolled in public career and technical education programs. It provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship, and character development. It builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes, and communication skills. It emphasizes total quality of work, high ethical standards, superior work skills, life-long education, and pride in the dignity of work. SkillsUSA Kentucky also promotes understanding of the free-enterprise system and the involvement in community service.

Partners: Teachers and school administrators serve as professional SkillsUSA Kentucky members. Many college and educational institutions, business, and labor sponsors actively support SkillsUSA Kentucky at the state level through financial aid, in-kind contributions, and involvement of the employees in state and local activities.

Programs: SkillsUSA Kentucky programs include, local, regional, state and national competitions in which students demonstrate occupational and leadership skills. At the annual state SkillsUSA Kentucky Leadership and Skills Championships, more than 1,000 students compete in over 100 occupational and leadership skill areas.

SkillsUSA programs also help to establish industry standards for job training in the lab and classroom, and promote community service. SkillsUSA is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and is cited as a “successful model of employer-driven youth development training program” by the U.S. Department of Labor and is an OSHA Alliance partner.

Membership: Approximately 6,000 students and instructors join SkillsUSA Kentucky annually. The state is organized into more than 100 chapters located throughout the state.
