We built the new 1.5 mile Hibbard Trail at Whitney Forest

Five new miles of the Mattatuck Trail in Warren were opened and blazed

The Burlington “gap” on the Tunxis Trail was completed and the trail is now continuous from Bristol's Marsh Pond to the Massachusetts border

Volunteers built or repaired 26 bridges

174 participants in 35 work parties worked on the trails

225 Trails Day events were hosted in 132 towns

Ÿ 210 partnering organizations coordinated events

3,966 teachers and adult learners attended 244 education programs

40 landowners, land trusts, and educators experientially learned about the sound management of CT's forests by attending the CT Forestry Tour and the Coverts Project Seminar

CFPA completed a timber harvest on the Whitney Forest in Lebanon, improving 84 acres of woodland habitat for wildlife

Over 268 volunteers gave 23,874 volunteers hours in 2015

15 different training sessions were held for 188 volunteers

CFPA's Headquarters was home for 183 meetings hosted by 32 organizations

Today's Land, Tomorrow's LegacyThe Connecticut Forest & Park Association – like you – envisions Connecticut as a place of scenic beauty whose communities are linked by a network of parks, forests and trails accessible for all people to challenge the body and refresh the spirit. You and other CFPA donors listed in this newsletter promote and sustain this essential vision for Connecticut.

However, our shared mission is always at risk if we are not alert and forward thinking. The good news is we have a plan, Today's Land, Tomorrow's Legacy, to protect what is important to you and your vision of Connecticut into the future.

Our era's big problem is disconnection from the land. People of all ages, especially young people, spend a surprising amount of time on their electronic devices. Working adults are so consumed by their jobs they are no longer connected to the outdoors. Environmentally responsible behavior comes from direct contact with the natural world. People who are not directly connected to the land are not going to fight for it.

We cannot simply watch this happen in our state, we must act now. Together, you and CFPA supporters are correcting this problem by connecting people to the land. It will take significant financial and human resources to turn this trend around. Today's Land - Tomorrow's Legacy was developed to do just that. There are three primary strategies:

Creating Transformative Experiences by improving and protecting the Blue-Blazed Hiking Trails, building a network of

shelters and an Outdoor Center for inspirational outdoor and overnight experiences in Connecticut.

Conservation Leadership at all level of government and in the community to protect forests. We will develop a new

generation of conservation leaders, educate the community about the importance of forests and expand CFPA's

conservation campus.

Inspire Generosity by expanding awareness of the role CFPA plays in the community and economy, growing CFPA

membership, volunteerism and support at all levels.

The Winslow Society was created in 2015 to acknowledge the unusual level of financial support CFPA receives from a small number of outstanding donors. Their gifts support all CFPA programs and are critical to CFPA's ability to grow and sustain its growth. Members of the Society support CFPA's mission through an annual, unrestricted gift of $1,000 or more.

Please consider becoming a member of this giving community. Growth of the Winslow Society is crucial to CFPA's land and trail conservation efforts benefitting of you and all Connecticut's people. One doesn't have to write a single check, many Winslow members support CFPA all year round via membership, the Spring campaign, Annual Fund and Run for the Woods. We hold special events for Society members, including the annual Art and Nature gathering at a Connecticut art museum. Last year it was held at the newly renovated Wadsworth Atheneum.

Laura Clementsen loved life and lived it to the fullest, famously taking her first motorcycle ride on her 89th birthday. She was a school psychologist, a member of the WAVES in WWII, a cross country skier, and a columnist for The Cheshire Citizen. She started playing the recorder late in life and joined fellow recorder musicians every month in CFPA's community meeting room for practice and community. Laura passed away in February, 2014, but she is still a donor to CFPA because of a generous legacy that continues her spirit of giving to our mission.

Laura Clementsen knew CFPA because of the Eastern Connecticut Recorder Society. The Society, an organizational member of CFPA, gathers monthly in our meeting room. CFPA's Honorary Board member and retired Connecticut College professor, Sally Taylor, introduced the group to CFPA and for years they've called CFPA home when they've met and played. We are unsure what prompted Laura to leave such a generous and significant legacy to CFPA and, as the gift came as a surprise to CFPA, we'll likely never know. We do wish we could have thanked her in person and told her the positive impact her legacy will make. She'd surely have smiled knowing her gift will help to ensure Connecticut's land and trails are protected and maintained to be enjoyed and experienced by future generations. Laura's positive impact on Connecticut conservation is impressive and we hope it will inspire others to leave their legacies to the forests, parks and trails of Connecticut like Laura.

Planned Giving is a unique action to protect the future of an organization you value and love. Laura did so via a bequest in her will. It is simple, inexpensive and allows the donor to leave detailed direction for the gift, or to allow the organization to use its discretion.
