THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY
Although WoomaNet Radio only came into existence in 2004, it was in the year
1977 that the Lord called the then 17 year old schoolboy Rudie van Heerden to
fulltime ministry. Early one morning in March of that year, while studying for his
exams, he heard the Lord clearly saying ―Go and proclaim the coming of Jesus is
near‖ (Gaan en verkondig die koms van Jesus is naby / Gaat en verkondigt de
komst van Jezus is nabij / Ir y anunciar la venida de Jesús está cerca). Having had
a keen interest in broadcasting all his life he joined the SABC in December 1979,
trusting that is where the Lord wants to use him, and pursued a career in Radio
and Television broadcasting and production with the SABC, Bop TV and M-Net.
Late one night in September 1989, just prior to his 30th birthday, he once again
experienced the presence of the Lord in his bedroom and clearly heard the Lord in
an audible voice confirming his calling to go and proclaim the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
After completing his theological studies and Bible School he left the corporate world of broadcasting in March 1995 and
started the ministry Active for Jesus Media Mission in April of that year. Up and until June 2004 he played a significant
role in assisting with establishing Christian Community Radio in South Africa as well as a national Christian media
strategy for the Swaziland Conference of Churches.
In June 2004 he was challenged to start an Internet-based Christian radio service that would serve the international
community with sound Word-based radio content. WoomaNet Radio was founded in July/August of that year and
launched on September 1st 2004.
A DECADE OF GRACE AND MIRACLES
The launch of WoomaNet Radio on 01 September 2004 was a leap in faith. With no funds available and no prospects for
future income (It was decided that WoomaNet Radio will be a FREE service worldwide and that no radio advertising will
be sold), they had no other option than to put their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ for all of their needs as well as the
success of this ―world first‖ Internet-based Christian radio-on-demand media ministry. Dutch Reformed Church
Krugersdorp-East accommodated WoomaNet Radio‘s admin. office on their premises in Kenmare, Krugersdorp while
Playground Productions in Featherbrook, Krugersdorp made their
recording studio available. After about 18 months of serious struggles
with the technical aspects of the WoomaNet Radio website, Dewald and
Susan Theron of Webminder in Krugersdorp offered their professional
services to WoomaNet Radio and became the official Webmasters that
re-designed and –developed the website to become the user-friendly
technically sound on-line service it is today. In 2008 the Lord provided
sufficient funds for WoomaNet Radio to build and equip its own recording
studio, as well as a small office adjacent to the studio. On WoomaNet Radio‘s 4th birthday the new facility was
commissioned, dedicated and taken into service.
It was in January 2010 that we learned of two Spanish-speaking sisters
that desired to learn more of Jesus Christ and started an internet search.
They landed up on WoomaNet Radio‘s website where they started streaming
some of our Afrikaans radio programmes, although they had no knowledge
of the language. What they heard though was fully understood by them as if
in their own home language. Through these programmes they came to know
Jesus Christ and accepted Him into their lives as Lord and Saviour. They then
started a small home cell that meets weekly to listen to the Christian radio programmes
on WoomaNet Radio. (NOTE: Similar happened in August 2013 when Internet users in
Ghana started listening to some of WoomaNet Radio’s Afrikaans programmes but understood
it as if in their mother tongue. A local radio station then picked up the programmes from WoomaNet Radio’s website and
broadcast it, in Afrikaans, to their listeners in the rural areas of Ghana. People that listened to these broadcasts
understood the content of these programmes as if it was their own language/dialect)
On 01 June 2011 a second playlist for WoomaNet Radio was activated for the
purpose of accommodating the multi-language radio content of World Mission
Broadcast Africa (WMBA), making it possible for Internet users worldwide to
also listen to Word-based Christian teachings in Somali, Swahili, Portuguese,
French, Shangaan, Malagasy and Zulu.
In July/August 2011 we had no other
option than to build a new office for the ministry
as the existing office became much to small for
the amount of work that‘s being done on a daily
basis. With no funds available we started the
building project in faith, trusting God for the
finances needed. On 01 September 2011 we
took occupation of the new office with all costs
covered and payed for.
March 2012 saw the activation of WoomaNet Radio‘s 3rd playlist for the
purpose of training and equipping lay-preachers and church leadership in
mainly Africa and the Middle-East. This development brought us face to
face with a new challenge that we had to address. In Africa few people had
access to PCs and the Internet. Most people had connectivity via mobile
phones though, but WoomaNet Radio was not available on mobile devices
as yet. Once again we had to step out in faith, trusting the Lord for the
necessary finances in order to make this happen. By the end of April 2012 Webminder completed the development of our
mobi-site, we could settle the bill 100% and it was activated 01 May 2012.
In 2013 WoomaNet Radio was instrumental in founding ―Tower of Life‖, a shelter for the
homeless in Krugersdorp CBD. Together with The Bethany House Trust, Muldersdrift
Community Ministries, NG Luipaardsvlei and NG Krugersdorp-East, we‘ve obtained the
premises of the old NG Krugersdorp Central Congregation, ideally situated for the
purpose of a shelter for the homeless. Tower of Life was officially opened on 3 June
2013 and is today a safe haven for on average 60 homeless people per day,
providing them with food, warm showers, clothing and a warm bed year round.

Beyond 9/11: The Impact of Prayer with Carter Conlon - Times Square Church
is located right in the middle of Manhattan. A church whose congregation,
weeks before 9/11, was drawn together almost daily in serious prayer about a
calamity that was coming—one for which they knew they needed to be
prepared. But for what, they had no idea. As the 8,000-member church body
began to pray, events on the church calendar were cancelled, prayer meetings
took their place, more and more people participated, provisions were even
stored in the church-there was a readiness. When the Towers fell, hundreds
walked dazed through the streets, "the grey ghosts" as church members
described them, finding open hands and hearts, shelter and help, clothing and
food beyond the doors of Times Square Church. Intertwined with the compelling
stories of the 9/11 responders is a powerful biblical message especially for
this release from Times Square Church Senior Pastor, Carter Conlon,
reminding us to be people of prayer — always ready!
