This is the first meeting since the school formerly known as Mesa State College officially changed its name on Aug. 10, 2011. SERIES: Through four meetings, the Mavericks hold an advantage of three games to one over Dixie State. The Red Storm played Mesa in its first ever Division-II game on Aug. 24, 2006, and were outmatched 42-14 in Grand Junction. DSC bounced back on Oct. 7, 2006 for its lone win of that season against CMU, 21-6. The two teams met again in 2007, with Colorado Mesa sweeping both games by scores of 41-14 and 38-13. Today’s contest begins a four-year arc to play the Mavericks in non-conference play, two games in St. George and two games in Grand Junction. LAST WEEK: Running back Terjean Saffold rushed for 179 yards, including a clinching one-yard touchdown run with 2:14 left as Adams State defeated Dixie State before 3,916 fans at Hansen Stadium in Saint George. Adams’ final touchdown came after the Grizzlies had taken the ball over on downs at Dixie’s 42-yard line with 4:25 remaining. In addition to Saffold’s TD, Adams State scored twice on TD passes of three and 30 yards from Trevor Eggleston to Dustin Bolt to overcome a 7-3 deficit. Dixie had taken a 7-3 lead in the first quarter on a GNAC-record 100-yard kickoff return by Cache Morgan. The previous record had been 98 yards by Courtney Smith of Central Washington against Western Oregon in 2008. The Red Storm’s only offensive touchdown came early in the fourth quarter on a seven-yard pass from quarterback Cody Stevenson to wide receiver Zack Fox. That score came on the first offensive play immediately following a fumble recovery by Blake Hansen, which was forced by Morgan. In addition to figuring in both of Dixie’s touchdowns, Morgan had 17 tackles. Nine of them were solos and one of them resulted in a 16-yard loss. Also in double figure tackles was linebacker Christian Case with 11. Dixie’s defense spent most of the day on the field as the Grizzlies ran 37 more offensive plays (81-44) and held the ball for nearly 40 of the game’s 60 minutes. Adams ended up with a 402-111 advantage in total offense, limiting the Red Storm to nine net rushing yards and 102 yards passing. MORGAN NAMED GNAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dixie State safety Cache Morgan has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his record-break- ing efforts last Saturday against Adams State. Morgan tied the single-game tackle record with 17. He shares the mark with Keauntea Bankhead and Nick Cragin, each with 17 during a game in 2010. He also set the school and conference record with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, accounting for DSC’s first score. “He’s a tremendous asset for our club,” said head coach Scott Brumfield at the DSC Coaches Radio Show on Tuesday. “He takes his special teams role as serious as his safety role.” The GNAC also honored Humboldt State quarterback Mike Proulx as Offensive Player of the Week and Jacks wide receiver Kevin Miles as Special Teams Player of the Week. RECORD SETTERS: In addition to Morgan’s school and conference record, junior kicker Jameson Schultz came close to a record in his first game for DSC. His first punt against Adams State took a friendly forward bounce, coming to rest 74 yards from the original line of scrimmage. That matched the second-longest punt in Red Storm history - Nate Lewis booted a 78-yard kick against Humboldt State on Oct. 20, 2007. OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAINS: Four players were voted as team captians by their peers, two from the offense and two from the defense. The 2011 Dixie State football captains are senior wide receiver Darren Carter, junior tight end Joe Don Duncan, senior linebacker Christian Case and junior safety Cache Morgan.

ON THE MAP - BEEHIVE STRONG: The Dixie State football roster has a native-state feel despite having 10 states and one American territory represented. Utah leads the list with 51 players, while California (17) and Nevada (9) are second and third highest respectively. Also on the roster are players from Wyoming (4), Idaho (3), Hawaii (3), Indiana (1), North Carolina (1), Mississippi (1), Louisiana (1) and American Samoa (1). Among Utah high school representation, Pine View and Box Elder each have three players on the Red Storm, while 11 other schools each have two graduates.

NAME’S THE SAME: Seven last names appear more than once on the 2011 DSC roster – Stevenson (Cody, Paul), Duncan, Jex (Tyson, Jake), Williams (Kris, Ezaevin, Brad. Travon), Smith (Jake, Xavier), Porrazzo, and Johnson (Brock, Max). Two pairs of brothers highlight the name associations and both instances feature one offensive and one defensive player. The brothers Porrazzo – Nick (cornerback) and Matt (wide receiver) – reunite after Matt transferred to Dixie State from Sacramento City College. Nick is a two-year letterwinner and starter in the Red Storm secondary. With the addition of tight end Joe Don Duncan, brother Jake has someone to tackle from his linebacker position. Jake became a starter for Dixie State late in 2010 while Joe Don was racking up touchdowns at El Camino College in California.

AWAY FROM THE GNAC: Dixie State hosts Colorado Mesa (formerly Mesa State College) for the first time in St. George since October 2007. Future GNAC football rival (and Pacific West Conference foe in every other sport), Azusa Pacific returns to Dixie on Oct.15. The Red Storm defeated the Cougars on Homecoming 2009 by a score of 33-23.

GNAC PRESEASON GLANCE: Not shockingly, Central Washington was selected as the preseason favorite to repeat as GNAC champs. The Wildcats have taken the last six GNAC crowns, last season by a one-game margin over Humboldt State. HSU and Western Oregon grabbed the number two and three spots in the preseason poll. Voting by the coaches suggested the possibility of a tight, three-team race to determine this year’s champ. Finishing fourth in the preseason poll was the Red Storm and Simon Fraser ended up fifth.

INJURY REPORT: Senior linebacker Aaron Corbiere will miss the entire season after tearing ligaments in his left knee. The injury was sustained in the second day of fall camp. Offensive lineman Joe Cowan is expected to miss the season with a knee injury. Also out for the Colorado Mesa game is freshman defensive back Jake Smith. A shoulder injury will keep Smith out for 2-4 weeks. He was originally slated to make the start at cornerback.

SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS: The Mavs fell in their home opener to Humboldt State Thursday night. It was the third meeting between the two teams. HSU now holds a 2-1 advantage. CMU (then Mesa State) defeated the Lumberjacks in 2007 in Grand Junction, 23-21. In 2005, the first ever meeting, Humboldt won on their home turf, 28-9. Kick returner Trent deBraga returned three kicks for 97 yards, long of 43. He led the team in all-purpose yards and also fi nished the game with nine tackles, including fi ve solo tackles and one pass breakup. CMU will travel to Dixie State next Saturday night.Tanner Whaley led the team in receptions with 58 yards on fi ve catches. He started his first game at wide receiver Thursday night having been the Mavs starting defensive back a year ago. Whaley was second on the team a year ago with 56 tackles Connor Wright led the team with 11 tackles against Humboldt State. He tallied three solo tackles and a game high eight assisted tackles. Wright had 1.5 tackles for a loss of four yards and had one quarterback hurry. Mike Brady punted seven times for 321 yards with a long punt of 57. He averaged 45.9 yards per punt and recorded three punts inside the 20-yard line.
