Wisdom from Pope Francis /

Sabiduria de Papa Francisco

In the heart of the Church, Mary

shines forth. She is the supreme

model for a youthful Church that

seeks to follow Christ with

enthusiasm and docility. While still

very young, she accepted the

message of the angel, yet she was

not afraid to ask questions

(cf. Lk 1:34). With open heart and

soul, she replied, “Behold, I am the

handmaid of the Lord” (Lk 1:38).

En el corazón de la Iglesia

resplandece María. Ella es el gran

modelo para una Iglesia joven, que

quiere seguir a Cristo con frescura

y docilidad.

A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR - FR. ROBBIE FAVAZZA

UNA NOTA DEPARTE DE NUESTRO PARRACO - PADRE ROBBIE FAVAZZA

Discerning My Vocation / Discerniendo Mi Vocación

Contact / Contacto: Rev. Robert Szczechura - (901) 373-1243 - [email protected]

“When Joseph awoke he did as the angel

of the Lord directed him.”

Are you prayerfully vigilant about discovering your vocation in Christ?

Might He be inviting you to the priesthood or consecrated life?

Kenneth Baily.

No estaba

Ven a adorarlo!

The narrative about the birth of Jesus that we learn from childhood is that the Holy Family arrived in Bethlehem

and there was no room in the inn. Mary was forced to give birth to her son in a stable and

lay him in a manger all thanks to the ingrates at the hotel. It probably didn’t happen that way.

Jospeh was a descendant of King David so it is unlikely that he would be turned away in the town of Bethlehem. It is the “City of David” after all! The community would have seen it as an obligation to assist his wife Mary with the pregnancy.

Hospitality was very important to them so it would be shameful not to help out in some way.

Simple village homes in Bethlehem had two rooms: the family room where everybody lived and worked and an animal stall where the creatures went to sleep each evening. These stalls had mangers built into them. Some homes even

had an additional guest room, or kataluma. Homes were frequently built into the side of caves.

“Many simple homes in traditional villages in the Holy Land begin in caves and are then expanded. The tradition of the

cave can be traced to Justin Martyr, writing in the middle of the second century,” writes Kenneth Baily.

Here is what probably happened when the Nativity of the Lord occurred. Mary and Joseph arrived in Bethlehem and

were offered lodging by their friends. There wasn’t any space left in the guest room of the home because it was already

occupied by other guests, but they were welcomed into the family room. Mary gave birth to her son Jesus assisted by the

village midwife and other women. “The child was born, wrapped, and (literally) “put to bed” (anaklino) in the living

room in the manger that was either built into the floor or made of wood and moved into the family living space”. The shepherds were delighted by this development. “They would

find the Christ child in an ordinary peasant home such as theirs. He was not in a governor’s mansion or a wealthy

merchant’s guest room but in a simple two-room home like theirs. This was really good news. Perhaps they would not be told, “Unclean shepherds—be gone!” This was their sign, a sign for lowly shepherds,” Baily asserts in his book Jesus

Through Middle Eastern Eyes. Jesus was born in a house in Bethlehem built into the side of a cave. He was placed lovingly in a manger, warmly welcomed by family and friends, and adored by the rich (i.e. Magi) and the poor.

This should bring us great joy. Christmas is coming up this Tuesday night.

Come let us adore Him!!

Con un Espíritu de Amor,

Rev. Robbie Favazza With a Spirit of Love,

Luz del mundo,

nos maravillamos de Tu llegada

a nuestro mundo como un

bebé indefenso.

Al abrazar completamente la vida

humana, incluso sufriendo y muriendo

en una cruz, nos redimió y nos

aseguró una parte de su vida eterna.

Durante esta temporada de celebración,

podemos darnos cuenta nuevamente de

cuánto somos bendecidos por nuestro

Emmanuel, Dios-Con-Nosotros.

En agradecimiento por todas las

bendiciones de su Reino,

y especialmente por nuestras familias

y nuestros amigos,

damos gracias.

Amén

Light of the world,

we marvel at your coming into our

world as a helpless baby.

By fully embracing human life,

even to suffering and dying on a cross,

you redeemed us and secured

for us a share in your eternal life.

During this season of celebration,

may we realize anew just how much

we are blessed by our Emmanuel,

God-With-Us.

In gratitude for all the blessings

of your Kingdom,

and especially for our families

and our friends,

we give thanks.

Amen.
