T he dark nights are creeping in and soon thesky will be ablaze with colour as bonfire nightedges closer!

Unfortunately for many animals fireworksprovide a very stressful experience, so here are a fewtips for helping your pets cope at this time of year.

Where possible remember to keep animals inside andensure all windows, doors and cat flaps are closed.Walk dogs whilst it’s still light outside and providedistractions such as chews and toys whilst fireworksare occurring. Many pets will try and hide andproviding a den if they haven’t already got a preferred

hiding spot may help them feelsafe. Try not to leave animals

alone, they will feel moresecure and relaxed

in your presence.Ignore any fearfulbehaviour or your

pet will think you aredistressed too and thismay increase their anxiety.

Pheromone plug-ins such as Feliway andAdaptil are useful aids to providing asafe feeling environment.

For younger animals socialisation CDsmay be useful to get them used to avariety of noises including fireworks,prior to the event.

However, for some animalsmedication may be required andshould be used in conjunctionwith desensitisation and counter-conditioning therapy.

Remember the incidence ofmissing pets increases at thistime of year. Ensuring your petis microchipped will aid in reuniting you with your petshould they go missing.
