This was the advice fromGanbina participant MarkRoberts (pictured) to studentsat the recent 2016 GanbinaCareers Night at the La TrobeUniversity Sheppartoncampus.
Mark, a first year Bachelor of Artsstudent at La Trobe, encouragedeveryone to stick to theireducational goals, and if at firstthey didn’t work out, to keeptrying other ways to achieve them.
He said he hadn’t always foundthings easy, but that he wasdetermined to get a place atuniversity and he never gaveup on his goal.
The Careers Night was a greatsuccess.
Over 65 people came along totalk to representatives fromdifferent companies, publicservice and defence organisations,universities and TAFE about allsorts of further education andcareer opportunities.

“I joined the army when I was 21 when I foundout that I could get a career and come out witha trade,” he said. “I originally signed up for fouryears, but after that, it was a no-brainer for meto stay, the benefits are great, I get paid morethan my friends and I’ve travelled overseas andall over Australia.
“The army has trained me to be a paratrooperand a qualified chef and now I work in recruit-ment. I’m married with two children and I thinkit’s a great life.”
Dylan said that the Careers Night was an eye-opener for him. “I want to study architecturewhen I leave school and it was great to get somuch information about different study options,Indigenous entry programs, scholarships,apprenticeships and industry possibilities,”he said.
“I made a lot of really useful contacts on thenight, it was fantastic.”
Sergeant Colquhoun, together with Warrant OfficerJack Joce (RAAF), are holding an Australian DefenceForce Recruiting Indigenous Information Sessionat 4.00 pm on Thursday, 21 July at MADEC, Suite 3,1-11 High Street, Shepparton. Ganbina participantsand their families are very welcome to attend.

“It was great to meet so many young Indigenouspeople on the night and take them through allthe different career options the Defence Forcecan give them,” Dan said.

The Program is tailored to suit your ownindividual needs, and is delivered byspecialist tutors, at no cost to you.
The main focus of the Program is to giveyou extra help with certain subjects, to helpyou have fun with your learning, and gainconfidence in your study skills.

Kiah has been a Ganbina participant forthree years.
“It was really good to talk to so many peoplewho could help me find out how I could getthe job I want when I leave school,” said Kiah.
“I want to be a dentist. I was able to get somereally useful information from a lot of the stallholders there about the different career pathsI can take with dentistry.”

“I want to be an electrician, I love taking thingsapart and putting them back together and Ireally like studying the electronic systems andmaths at school.
“I talked about training options with the TAFEand Defence Force people there and found outall sorts of information I didn’t know before.”
