Lignin from the organosolv reactor is tuned to give a lignin that is ideal for a variety of high value products. The lignin is optimized by process conditions in the reactor or post process extraction and thermal treatment. Poplar lignin may be directly spun into carbon fibers and avoid the extraction step. We have no data on softwood feedstocks.

• Hot water washed (60oC) until water is clear

• Extracted with methanol and subsequently 70/30 methanol/methylene chloride at room temperature

• Switchgrass organosolv lignin

• MIBK/EtOH/H2O; 16/34/50 wt% with 0.05M H2SO4@ 160oC for 120min

Conclusions

• Lignin can be tuned to produce a variety of products.

• We can take advantage of volatile materials and oxidation to produce rigid foams.

• Blowing agents help produce consistent, low density foams.

• Low density ≠ low properties

• Still a lot of testing and optimization to do…

• Thermal properties, consistent cell size, lower density, higher processing temperatures, larger foams, reducing environments, low Mw biomaterials as BA, etc.
