  • Negro League Baseball

Negro League Baseball was founded in 1885 by Rube Foster. Comprised of African American teams, as well as some teams from Latin America. “Negro League Baseball” is a broad term used for the black professional baseball teams outside of the leagues and the 7 relatively successful black leagues from the 1920’s, known as the “Negro Major Leagues.” As of December 2020, Major League Baseball has classified the seven "Negro Major League" teams as major leagues, recognizing team statistics and approximately 3,400 players who played from 1920 to 1948.

  • The Springfield Park District’s Henson Robinson Zoo is calling all artists!

Here is what we need: Your artistic impression of a monarch butterfly or flower that the monarch may enjoy.

    ● It must be able to be attached and hang from very fine fishing line. The line will be attached to one of two large frames and hung in our main entrance lobby for everyone to enjoy for the entire year!

    ● It can be small or it can be big as long as it’s not too heavy (be reasonable). We want to “raise the roof” with this installation, not bring it down.

    ● Make it from something that might normally be thrown out. Plastic bottles and jugs, corks, wire, cloth, newspaper or scratch paper, look in your recycle bin, your closet, your craft room ….the list goes on (please no glass or sharp metal).

More information can be found on the FMS webpage!

The zoo hopes to be opening (with guidelines) Saturday, March 20th for the 2021 season and we want to celebrate March Monarch Madness! You may already know that the Monarch is Illinois’ state insect, but did you know that the Eastern Monarch travels through Illinois on its migration journey between central Mexico and Canada. Mid-March is when the Eastern Monarch starts it’s long trip from Mexico and heads north. We want to celebrate this journey on opening weekend at the zoo.
