HUNTLEY — The only contested race in Huntley for the upcoming April election features many familiar faces but only one incumbent, as four candidates vie for three trustee positions.

Trustee John Piwko will try to convince voters that he has the most village board experience as he aims for a third consecu-tive term, while former Trustee Jay Kadakia, fresh off a November loss for McHenry County Board, attempts a comeback.

J.R. Westberg, an Air Force veteran, also returns to the ballot, after unsuccessfully running for trustee in the last local election in 2011.

Newcomer Ronda Goldman hopes her civic experience with the Huntley Historical Society and other local groups will be enough to win over voters when they head to the polls April 9.

“Anytime you have four people looking for three spots, it is going to be a challenge,” Pikwo said. “I like what I do, and I want to continue. Being the only incumbent, I do have that experience.”

Incumbent Pam Fender decided not to run for re-election, after announcing her campaign to be the next Grafton Township supervisor. Trustee Ron Hahn also declined to pick up a petition, after being appointed to the position in 2011.

All of the four trustee candidates are aware of the math that is going to leave one man, or woman, out of a Village Board spot, once all ballots are counted.

Most candidates said they plan to start knocking on doors and meeting with voters

and community groups in the months lead-ing up to the April election.

Kadakia is familiar with the board, after serving as trustee from 2007 to 2011, before losing to incumbents Harry Leopold, Niko Kanakaris and then-newcomer Nick Hanson.

Kadakia also knows about Hahn’s 2011 appointment, after Village President Chuck Sass initially recommended Kadakia to fill the term of Paul Mercer, who resigned after moving to Arizona.

Led by resistance from Fender, the board split on Kadakia’s appointment, forcing Sass to recommend Hahn, a longtime Plan Commission member. But Kadakia said that the failed appointment had to do with local politics, not his public service pedigree.

Kadakia still serves on the McHenry County Ground Water Task Force and on a transportation panel for the McHenry County Council of Governments. He said that experience, coupled with his trustee term, makes him highly qualified to tackle the issues a growing community, such as Huntley, faces.

If elected, his priorities would be expand-ing the village’s water system and improving Huntley’s infrastructure.

“Huntley needs me,” Kadakia said. “With the many candidates on the board, I can do a better or equal job than them. I have the expertise and knowledge to do that.”

Goldman, a retired teacher and Chicago Public Schools administrator, is vice presi-dent and a founding member of the local historical society.

She also is vice president of the Huntley Civilian Police Academy and served on the now-defunct District 158 financial advisory

committee.The Sun City resident said she would

focus her attention as trustee on economic development, helping a thriving community attract commercial developers and retailers. She also would strive to preserve the village’s rural history.

“I have a feeling that Huntley is soaring to greatness, and I want to help map that jour-ney,” Goldman said.

After losing two years ago, Westberg said the community has had more opportuni-ties to understand him and his values. The Air Force veteran now serves on the village’s Plan Commission and holds a leadership position with the Huntley American Legion.

The former Huntley Jaycees President said he would protect taxpayers, as more developers look to locate to Huntley. He also would maintain the village’s history of fiscal conservatism.

Like Goldman, Westberg has never held elected office.

“My dedication to Huntley has only increased in the past two years,” Westberg said. “I have learned more about how the village works, as well as I have a better understanding of what our residents care about.”

Piwko, who is active with St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Huntley Youth Baseball league, said he would like to see through the competition of the $69 million Interstate 90 interchange and the Kreutzer Road extension.

Piwko, who has been serving as trustee since 2007, said he has many pet projects he would like finalized. That primarily includes a more connected sidewalk and bike path system throughout the village.

HUNTLEY — Volunteers at the Huntley Community Radio station are eying late 2013 to achieve their long-standing goal of being on residents’ local FM dial.

In October, for the first time since 2000, the Federal Communications Commission will accept applications from noncommercial, educational broadcasters to create low-power FM stations.

The rare opportunity means the all-day community station in Huntley could start transmitting on the radio, after broadcasting exclusively on the Internet since September.

“We want to increase our listeners right here in Huntley,” said Dorothy Litwin, who oversees programming at Huntley Community Radio.

Litwin said the station simply needs to stay on the air long enough to apply to the FCC, because it already meets certain criteria, such as having an all-volunteer staff and not relying on advertising.

If its application is successful, the FCC would allow the station by 2014 to broadcast at a signal strength no great-er than 100 watts, roughly the amount of electricity that powers a typical household light bulb.

The signal would allow the station to reach listeners within a 10-mile radius of its newsroom in Deicke Park, 11419 S. Route 47.

The 50-plus volunteers at the stationwill have to detail programming and services they’ve offered in an applica-tion, so they’ll look to double station programming and increase its audience in the year ahead.

Currently, the station offers about 16 educational programs that cover topics from music to children shows and tra-ditional newscasts, Litwin said.

The ultimate goal for the station is to keep the growing Huntley community connected and informed.

“We don’t want to become just a jukebox,” she said.

FCC licensure would let the station build a transmitter tower that could cost $75,000. The all-volunteer staff already has started to develop a fund-raising campaign to cover it, Litwin said.

MARENGO — Cindy Gaffney remem-bers all of the animals she’s helped save, but the ones that stick with her are the ones that don’t make it.

She recalls a senior veteran’s dog. “You always want to help everybody,”

she said. “It broke our hearts we weren’t able to save this dog. For this gentleman, this was his life-long companion. ... He just didn’t know what the problem was. By the time we took over, the dog was too far gone.”

The dog’s bladder erupted before he could receive surgery.

It’s just one of many stories Gaffney could tell about the dogs and cats she’s encountered in McHenry County as part of a Guardian Angel Program.

The relatively new program is part of Gaffney’s Animal Services & Assistance Program, based in Marengo. ASAP fos-ters, shelters and adopts cats, distributes donated food and supplies to animal wel-fare organizations and runs a Trap-Neuter Return Program for stray and feral cats.

But what ASAP also offers is a service unlike any other in the area.

Funded solely through donations and grants, Guardian Angels swoop in to save near-death cats and dogs. For the most part, the animals otherwise would be euthanized.

A kitten found frozen underneath a car in a parking lot. Another 1-pound kitten found at a farm, barely alive. A young cat with burns on its face and ears and singed hair on its back, abandoned in a carrier in

an emergency room on New Year’s Eve.“It’s really life-saving,” Gaffney said.

“It’s not something where the animal just has a cold.”

The program has provided the funds for needed amputations of legs and tails and taken animals others no longer wanted.

“We step in and say, ‘We’ll take care of the animal and try to find it a good home when it has recovered,’ “ Gaffney said.

Most recently, the program also has started offering medical care for the ani-mals in low-income homes. Families are referred to the program by area veterinar-ian offices and agencies, including Family Alliance Inc., based in Woodstock.

The Guardian Angel program originally started as a way to provide life-saving medical care to animals at shelters and rescue facilities. But through social media and donations, the shelters have been able to raise their own funds and often find the means to help the animals, Gaffney said.

The program in the past several months has honed in on abandoned and homeless animals, as well as those owned by area families but not receiving the care they need.

Many of the animals are referred by ani-mal emergency and veterinarian offices.

The difficult part, Gaffney said, is vet-ting all the animals in need. She doesn’t want to turn anybody down, but some-times, families can afford to help their animals and choose not to.

The goal always is to keep the pets unit-ed with their families, she said.

“That’s a difficult line to walk,” she said.

“You don’t want to compromise the

care of the animals, but in some cases, they just don’t want to pay,” she said. “They just don’t recognize that’s a valued family member.”

In those cases, families typically are asked to relinquish the animal.

But in many cases, families simply have hit tough times and no longer have the funds to provide regular veterinarian care, Gaffney said.

Marcia Kinsman of Woodstock lives in subsidized housing on Social Security and suffers from scoliosis. When her 8-year-old cat, Tyler, started losing weight quickly, she took him to a veterinarian. She found out he suffered from diabetes.

His medical care, including $400 worth of monthly insulin shots, was too much for her to afford. A date – June 14 – was set for Tyler to be euthanized.

“I changed my mind and couldn’t do it,” Kinsman said. “I didn’t want to put him to sleep.”

Referred to Guardian Angels, volunteers now visit weekly to give Tyler the insulin shots he needs.

Along with donations, a $7,500 grant from the McHenry County Community Foundation has helped fund the program.

Gaffney always has tried not to compete for donations and other funding avail-able to the county’s many animal rescue groups and shelters. She said she seeks out corporate sponsors and other funding sources.

“Our expenses have gone up, but we’ve managed to take in enough in-kind dona-tions to support it,” Gaffney said. “I don’t know what will happen if it out-runs itself.”

Paul Lee was just 10 years old when he received a magic kit for Christmas. Thanks to his parents’ encouragement, that first kit led to a career — the Carol Stream resident and illusionist has been a professional magician for over 35 years.

Today, Lee performs at over 300 shows each year for Chicago-area audiences. He can be found doing slight of hand tricks at family gatherings, birthday and holiday parties, cor-porate events and restaurants. Over the years, he’s been booked by schools and libraries and performs at festivals.

He even held the position of ringmaster for the Franzen Brothers Circus and headlined his own show for four years at Riverview Park and Waterworld in Wisconsin Dells.

Lee’s also shared his time and talent during hundreds of benefit shows.

Then in 2007 when his niece, Teagan, was born with Down syndrome, it motivated him to help organizations serving people with the birth defect that’s the result of an extra chro-mosome. The syndrome causes mental retar-dation, according to the website medterms.com, a characteristic facial appearance and several malformations.

As he was performing at a birthday party, Lee met National Association for Down Syndrome board member Anne Reinertson. The connec-tion was the start of a collaboration with NADS, which resulted in a magic show fundraiser that Lee led last year that raised approximately $5,000 for the organization.

Now, Lee’s finalizing details for a second NADS fundraiser, Believe in Magic II, to be held at a bigger venue to raise more money for the cause. The second annual show, which will be held Jan. 19 at Berwyn’s Morton West High School, will feature Lee and other local illusionists. Proceeds from the event will again go to NADS.

According to the group’s website, NADS was founded in 1961 in Chicago by parents of children with Down syndrome. The mission is

ensuring that everyone with the disorder has the chance to achieve their potential. The group also offers information, support and advocacy.

“I wanted to do something close to my heart,” Lee said.

Headlining the show is just the latest in a long line of performances Lee’s done for charitable organizations, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Starlight Children’s Foundation — A L.A.-based organization that aims improve life for kids and families in hos-pitals around the world.

In addition, for 18 years, he’s visited the Ronald McDonald House and pediatric ward at Loyola University Hospital, where he goes room to room performing for children.

For the upcoming show at Morton West, Lee recruited several well-known personalities to donate their time, including the Mysterious Chezaday; Bobby Hunt, aka Circus Boy; Chick Field and Friends; Plaz Garcia; Karen Burris, clown, magician and singer, plus the show’s MC Ken Mate and his wife, Terri.

“Although he doesn’t want to take credit, Paul is driving force this event,” said NADS Executive Director Diane Urhausen. “What he does is just amazing... It is the generosity of all the performers that makes this fund-raiser possible.”

Lee said he also plans to include niece, Teagan, in his show. But he isn’t willing to reveal the details — at least just yet.

WOODSTOCK — Christopher Canache came into the world early Jan. 1 as the first McHenry County baby born in thew year.

Parents Daniela and Pedro Canache of Huntley welcomed their second son at Centegra Hospital – Woodstock, a mere 10 minutes after the region celebrated and greeted 2013 at midnight.

Centegra officials visited the parents Jan. 1 and presented them with a gift basket for having the first McHenry County baby born in the new year.

“It’s great to have a new baby. Anytime would have been great,” Pedro Canache said. “It’s a different experience because everyone here at the hospital were excited because we got the first baby of the new year.”

Pedro Canache said his wife, Daniela, started feeling contractions around 4 p.m. Monday, while they were eating pizza at Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria near Lakewood. From there, the two scurried to Centegra Hospital – Woodstock.

Nearly eight hours later, the Huntley couple had their second son in a pregnancy that went smooth and without complica-

tions, Pedro Canache said. The couple only had praise for Centegra’s staff for guiding them through labor.

“They were great,” Pedro Canache said. “Everything went real smooth.”

Christopher Canache weighed five pounds, 13 ounces.

The couple, who have been married since 2007, were originally expecting Christoper Canache to be due around January 10. But they were prepared for an early arrival, since their oldest son, Daniel, was born 38 weeks and four days into the pregnancy.

was at the hospital Jan, 1 to welcome his new brother. A summertime baby, Daniel was born in Texas, where the Canaches lived until moving in February to a new home in Huntley.

Daniela and Pedro Canache decided on the name Christopher because it related well with Christmas, the festive time of year that Christopher missed by only six days.

The Canache family, now with four members, was expected to leave the hospi-tal by by evening of Jan. 1.

St. Charles teen gets noticed, gets in Vogue

ST. CHARLES — Any model knows it takes a lot of hard work and a little luck to break into the industry.

A big break for 15-year-old Claudia Sitko of St. Charles came in December when a photo shoot featuring her and another St. Charles teen was published in the fashion industry-leading magazine Vogue Italia.

“I was at school when I found out and I was freaking out,” Claudia said.

Chicago fashion photographer Thomas H.P. “Jerry” Jerusalem made no promises that the photos would be accepted by Vogue’s editor when he offered the photo shoot.

The shoot featured the girls wearing vin-tage clothing in and around a 1960s Mustang for a Route 66 road trip theme.

Claudia’s mom, Karla Sitko, said Jerusalem first noticed her daughter after she appeared in the Live Out Loud Charity Fashion Show in November.

Live Out Loud is a charity organization

focused on suicide prevention.Claudia was one of more than 160 models

in the show where she featured clothes from her mom’s boutique.

Karla owns Claudia’s Closet LUX Boutique and Consignment in downtown St. Charles, which she opened in April 2011.

Karla said beauty queens frequent her shop, including Miss Florida and Miss Illinois.

Miss Midwest Madeline Cole of Elburn was in the shop recently looking for formal wear.

Cole and her mom introduced Claudia to the founder of Live Out Loud, Sherrie Gearhart, which eventually led to Claudia appearing in the fashion show.

“After the show, a bunch of pictures wound up on Facebook,” Karla said. “Kim Cole (Madeline’s mom) then suggested to the photographer (Jerusalem) that Claudia would be excellent for a photo shoot.”

For the shoot, Claudia and her friend Daniela Kapusta, 17, of St. Charles, modeled clothing from Claudia’s Closet.

Their hair and make-up were done by Paty Ramirez and Taisha Davilla of One Salon and Bridal in St. Charles.

Both St. Charles businesses were credited in Vogue Italia.

“I’m very excited,” Karla said. “Our store went global. One Salon went global. How huge is that? ... It just puts [us] on the map. We’re the place to go.”

The shoot might help open the door a little wider for Claudia, who’s aspiring to be a full-time model.

“I want to keep doing shoots,” Claudia said.

She said her eyes are distinctive, which Jerusalem commented on.

During a shoot, models are sometimes asked to think about a story so that they talk with their eyes.

But it can be difficult to portray the right persona.

“You just kind of go with it,” Claudia said. “You can’t overthink it. You have to be relaxed. ... You just have to [do] different things with your body that look unusual.”

She’d like to try out for the TV show “America’s Next Top Model” but she said she’ll have to wait until she’s 18.

At 15, Claudia’s age is something her moth-er and photographers have to be mindful of.

Claudia said some fashion agents want 15-year-olds to look more childish, but her look is more adult.

Karla said one photographer during a shoot seemed “creepy” and she has to protect her daughter from “weirdos.”

“Everything she does, I go with her,” Karla said.

And she reviews the photos before they print.

“Now, we have to be careful with photog-raphers,” Karla said. “Jerry asked me if a shot was borderline.”

But while Claudia’s waiting until she’s 18 to possibly try out for “America’s Next Top Model,” the Vogue shoot already opened the door.

Karla said six photo shoots with various local studios were lined up since the Vogue Italia publication .

Stages of healing DVD captures play by co-founder of Midwest Shelter For Homeless Veterans

After serving in Vietnam, it was a long road home for Bob Adams of Winfield, who fought to get his

life back and became a licensed clini-cal social worker along the way. Adams — who has a private practice in Lombard — turned into a champion for fellow sol-diers, both by treating post-traumatic stress disorder, and later by co-found-ing the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans.

His memoir, “Place of Angels,” was adapted into the one-man theater production a decade ago, whose most recent performance was just taped in Chicago starring Jeff Still. It’s the cen-terpiece of a DVD that will be available in coming months.

Located in Wheaton, MSHV provides U.S. veterans of any era with transitional and affordable housing programs and supportive services to help them out of homelessness. It’s the only veteran-specific transitional housing program in DuPage County.

How did the memoir come about?I wrote the memoir in 1999 (from)

the stories I’d been telling for years. I (had) volunteered as technical adviser for plays about Vietnam, (and theater) people would say, “You tell the stories, why not write them down?”

The memoir picks up with your 1960s preparatory seminary high school days.

I decided to join the Navy with a friend on the buddy plan. I weighed 105 pounds and was blind in the left eye. I wouldn’t have gotten drafted, but the people at the recruiting center physi-cal gave me the opportunity if I wanted to (enlist.) The last thing I wanted was to go (to Vietnam.) I thought by joining the Navy, I’d be offshore. I volunteered to become a hospital corpsman (and) ended up with a Marine platoon. I write about it from the point of view that I didn’t do it for my country or democ-racy. I did what I did for those men that I served with — my squad, my platoon, my company. That’s a more universal experience for veterans. It’s more about who’s there in front of you.

How has the show been received?It’s what I hoped it would be. It

makes people laugh, it makes them cry,

feel something and look at all of this in a somewhat different way than they might have. The main reasons for the DVD are education and therapeutic (use) — and it will (allow) some fundraising. (We’re) making it available to VA hospi-tals; they have PTSD clinics. That’s one of the places.

How did the DVD arise?The idea … came from (retired

Army) Col. Paul Herbert, director of the Cantigny First Division Museum, (who) came to see it staged in May, and said, “We’ve got to find some way to

preserve this.” The execution … was by Pam Kostecki, who is our newly minted director of operations — absolutely invaluable to getting it done.

Other thoughts?Our mission is that we will leave no

veteran behind to homelessness. When you’re in your homes, as it should be, warm and safe and cared for, please give a brief thought to those men and women who are on the street tonight — all of them — and particularly those who wore the uniform and afford us all the oppor-tunity to live the lives we get to live.

(Note: In February, Adams says he expects the 55th veteran to have suc-cessfully gone through the MSHV pro-gram, whose shelter opened in 2007.)

Structure of style Andrea Reynders sculpts career in fashion design

After Andrea Reynders of St. Charles took early retirement from chairing the department of fashion design at the School of the Art Institute

of Chicago, she found the time to build a clothing line, now carried exclusively by Sandra Webster in Geneva. Her creative career extends from being a visiting art-ist at the Royal College of Art in London to consulting with art and design schools across the country on developing new fashion studies programs. She and her architect husband, Hennie Reynders, co-teach a design course annually at the SAIC, and have both been involved with the St. Charles Arts Council, including plans for a fashion-themed “neXt gallery” pop-up exhibition this year.

What does your line focus on?I’m producing … one-of-a-kind or small edition

clothing. I have been designing my whole adult life.

You hardly sound retired.People say retire. I say rewire. If you’re a creative

person, it never leaves you. It’s not something you leave at the office and lock the door.

What will people find at Sandra Webster?A fine line of coats. I love to work with natural fab-

rics. They’ll be looking at a lot of natural woolens at the moment. I also love the idea of repurposing woolens and cashmere. … I take really good woolen blankets, wash them, soften them, clean them up and make them beautiful and give them a whole new use and life again. I hunt around for … really good cashmere sweat-ers. I will launder them and take them apart and recut them and put them into new designs. I truly believe if you have a (well) produced garment and it’s made out of a very good fabric, you could have that garment for many, many years — if it has a good sense of design to it. It’s all about style. I’m not a a trend designer. I’m (aware) of what’s in fashion in the moment, (but) I tend to design something simple and architectural in shape (and) ways of manipulating the garment itself.

Share an example.(My) flip coat … is a two-way coat made in a high-

tech fiber, a well-made synthetic. You can fold them up into an envelope size. There are two ways of wearing them: One way is a shorter coat (with) two deep pock-ets and a very full collar that you can make a hood. If you take that coat and turn it upside down, it becomes a longer coat. It’s a trick in design. It still has pockets that are usable.

You create garments conducive for travelers.I like to eliminate carrying handbags or purses. I like

to build in a lot of pockets. (And) I like to hide pockets in places one wouldn’t expect to look for them, (where) you can keep valuables, a passport, extra money. (I

pick) fabrics that are … wash and wear, and pack up really small.

You’ve been sharing fashion advice with the St. Charles Singers ensemble.

I’ve done a lot of costume (work) in my career … for film and theater and advertising. I’m very aware of people’s reaction to what you’re looking at. I’m very interested in all aspects of design and living, and how we can make our lives beautiful, but func-tional at the same time, so it’s a pleasure to be alive.
