Your Statement of Intent (SOI) must provide an outline brief of your Final Major Project (FMP). The brief will normally be of your own choosing. If you decide to work on a team/group brief (with other students) ensure that you explain how you will respond individually to the brief and the extent of your individual responsibilities and contribution.
Prepare your SOI carefully, referring to the guidance in each section below. The guidance should be seen as a prompt and not be regarded as being prescriptive.
The SOI must be a minimum of 300 and must not exceed 500 words (excluding the APPENDIX). Each section, One to Four, has a guide to the number of words to best structure your statement to meet the grading criteria for the Confirmatory Stage. You are reminded that the bibliography and timescale should be included in the APPENDIX and will not be included in the overall word count.
The SOI must be word processed.

Ara DevineTitle: A faceless portrait
Section 1: Final Major Project
For my Final major project I am going to produce a selection of photographs and an experimental film piece centered on the theme of the human touch on the world, and the
personality of a persons individual contribution. I feel I can portray an accurate and evocative portrait of a person without actually photographing their face. I think what a person spends
their time doing is much more telling of their personality, goals and talents than a headshot. The project will be an exploration in capturing a person in an anonymous manner, but in a
way that is personal and reflective.
Section2: Influences, Research, Sources and IdeasI plan to visit various working professionals, for example an artist, a farmer, a butcher, a
mother etc. The activity they are involved in will be incorporated into the photo. This will be the centrepiece of my project. I also plan to do research into narrative film that does not use
dialogue and actors but rather symbolism and the use of objects in creating a storyline. I hope to connect the two so that the photography and film both complement each other in conveying
my theme. I will do research on portrait artists and see if I can incorporate their ideas into my
photography. Some of the artists I plan on studying are the photographer Steve McCurry and his use of colour in portraits, David Hockney and his photo collages, Carl Beebee and his
conceptual portraits and Steve McQueen and his experimental installations I will a visual diary at all times to record ideas and to adapt the project as the idea develops.
Section3: Techniques and Processes and TimescaleI plan to use a range of media while exploring this subject, such as pen and ink, charcoal, an Apple Macbook, photoshop image manipulation, film editing software and also different
modes of installation in creating the final project. I will also use the internet, library resources and speak to some local photographers while preparing for the various shoots. I will also be
shooting on a DSLR camera for the photography and film.
Section 4: Method of EvaluationMy diary will serve as a bank of ideas during the project. I will be guided and advised by my
tutor and I will also take into consideration feedback from my peers in the class. At the end of the project I will write an evaluation on my work.
Action Plan
I have made an action plan that I wish to follow through my project to give me a certain structure. Letting me have deadlines to work to and goals to achieve on time. This will make sure I have the project completed within the eight weeks.
Weeks 1-2Using the internet, the student library I will do research on photographers who produce similar work. I will visit local businesses and identify people I could use as subjects. Draw ideas into
my journal and consider compositions and techniques.
Weeks 3-4Build up a large selection of work around the project. To identify strong images and to
possibly reshoot these to refine the idea for the final exhibition.
Weeks 5-6Edit and experiment on photoshop and adobe premiere and to create large interesting pieces
of work that reflect my theme.
Weeks 7-8Present my final images and prepare for my exhibition. Present all my work in an interesting,
clear and professional manner. Complete an evaluation report.
