BACK TO LIFE THE CHILDREN THE WORK The BTL program helps refugee children in Dutch shelters to express their emotions via creative workshops. The name of the project is quoted from a Syrian asylum seeker who, after a period of depression due to war trauma, regained self-confidence and found purpose again. The proceeds from selling the photo’s, paintings, etc., created in the workshops, are donated to children in refugee shelters in their home country. Children helping children - a powerful therapeutic process to soothe inner wounds of war.

The workshops are intended for children living in the AZC’s up to the age of 11 years. They are held outside of the camps and instruction is given in their own and the Dutch language. The children are supervised by female social workers who are responsible for their emotional welfare. Two older children (up to the age of 16 years) assist the trainer on-site. This will help them too, to positively channel their own emotions and advance their integration into Dutch society.

An advisory council of multicultural medical specialists advise and can be consulted on physical and psychological aspects of the children. Developed by Dutch specialists, translated into English and into Arabic, the workshops are given by native speaking trainers. The goal is to create a safe and familiar environment where interactive creativity makes room to happiness. The workshops range from painting and photography to music and drama.
