It was a temple dedicated to the Goddess of the hunt, Artemis. Young girls used to resort to her for receiving protection. And so did the nymph Arethu-sa, to whom the insistent Alphaeus had shattered her sense of tranquillity. Artemis granted the nympha new life in Syracuse by changing her into a spring. Built on the highest peak of the islet of Ortigia, the temple dates back to the Geomoroi, or Geomori, the landowners descended from Corinthian colonists.

Misused for a long time, the Swabian chapel is a Pal-ace’s jewel. The entrance is through the courtyard. Originally thought to be a porch, it was turned into a place of worship after Emperor Federico II. Af-ter being downgraded to be used as a kitchen and woodshed over the centuries, it was refurbished in the early 20th century. The creation of the Episcopal Prison, instead, is owed to Giovanni Antonio Capobi-anco, the Bishop of the city in the late 17th century.

Named after George Maniakes, the Byzantine Gen-eral who took Syracuse from the Arabs in 1038, it became one of the most impressive castles of the time with Frederick of Swabia, in 1200. With the House of Aragon, namely with Eleanor of Naples, it became “Camera Reginale”, a feudal institution that made Syracuse and its surroundings the queen’s dowry. Here the rebelling barons from Syracuse were gathered on a pretext and beheaded.

San FilippoNeri owes its origins to Margherita De Grandi, a 17th-century noblewoman, who invested all her possessions in the foundation of the church attached to the oratory. Firstly transformed into a college for seminarians and then into high school, the complex was entrusted to the care of congre-gations. Due to mismanagement, it was afterwards assigned to a rector who, to keep the church open, began to celebrate masses collecting alms.

A little jewel of medieval architecture in the old Jew-ish quarter. The Basilica of San Giovanni Battista, better known as San Giovannello, was built on the ruins of a 4th-century Christian Basilica. Its façade and plant date back to 1380. A lace-like rose window embellishes the portal even though not aligned with it because of 18th-century changes and alterations. The interior is characterised by a nave and two aisles and pointed arches as well.

One of the oldest ports of the Mediterranean. In these seas, Syracuse fought against Carthage during the Punic Wars. Opened on 13th August 1892, the Maritime Station of Syracuse Port was the last stop of the shipping line coming from Messina. After the enlargement of the port, King Vittorio Emanuele III, was heartily welcomed by the Syracusans in 1930. Opens to the public for the fi rst time.

The port of the Mediterranean and the salute to the KingThe fi rst register of baptisms, preserved in the church by the Carmelites, dates back to 1367. In 1693, an earthquake damaged the Convent at-tached to the church. Subsequently, the church was restored and decorated with 18th-century stuccos, which were designed by the architect Pompeo Picherali and, later, by Luciano Alì. In 1901, it was used to encamp soldiers. At the end of the war, the building was reverted to the original use.

Middle Ages, Baroque and military occupation

The church was fi nished in 1742, as you can read on the façade, but the building was pre-existent, un-earthed by the Confraternity of St. Philip after the earthquake of 1693. After a restoration, the church is worth a visit mainly for the underground passag-es, a network of tunnels dug by the Greeks. Traces of paleo-Christian hypogea and Jewish baths for purifi cation are resurfaced. Also visit the crypt with the tombs of the brethren.

In the quarter La Graziella, it tells centuries of his-tory through many layers whose traces have been visible since the paleo-Christian era. Known as San Pietro Dentro Le Mura, the church was built in the 4th century in Byzantine style. In the middle ages, it was rebuilt and afterwards altered in Renais-sance and Baroque styles. After bombardments, it was deconsecrated. The church preserves frag-ments of Byzantine frescoes.
