Bramley Church of England PrimaryTask 1: Write a job advert for a Zookeeper – upload on Seesaw

1. First, watch this video about the duties a Zookeeper will typically carry out in a day (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIjQ4tAi49M). On Youtube, type in ‘A Day in the Life of Zookeeper – Paradise Wildlife Park’.

2. Make notes on things you see in the video that you think it will be important for your advert.

3. You will need to think about what kind of personality would be suitable for that job, what their skills/qualifications would need to be, and you will also need to outline what their tasks would be each day.

4. Think carefully about the skills a prospective employee would need, based on the day to day events you saw in the video. As well as being good with animals, zookeepers are expected to interact with the public and also use the online computer system for their forms – so be sure to include these sorts of things in your advert!

5. In your books, use the layout below, or create your own! When you’re finished, upload a picture to Seesaw!

Task: First, to check your understanding, translate these sentences from French to English:

1. J’ai vu un lion orange et jaune fort.

2. J’ai vu un crocodile vert silencieux et vieux.

Now write 5 of your own sentences, following this formula:

J’ai vu + the animal/s + colour/s + characteristic/s

Once you’re done, take a picture and upload it to seesaw! If you’re feeling really brave – you could record yourself reading your sentences out loud!

5

Masculine (the word begins with un)

Feminine (the word begins with une)

You need to put together the animals & characteristics & colours to create sentences about what you saw at the Zoo.

I saw = J’ai vu

A loud grey elephant – Un elephant gris bruyant

*In French, the adjective goes after the noun. It will go noun, colour, adjective. *

All together… J’ai vu un elephant gris bruyant.

If you want to add more than one adjective or colour, you can use the French word for ‘and’ which is ‘et’. EG:

J’ai vu un pingouin noir et blanc heureux.

I saw a happy black and white penguin.

Bramley Church of England PrimaryTask 4: Animal fact-file

1. Every animal enclosure needs some key information about the animals that live there. You need to choose an animal you would find in a zoo and create a fact file to be used for the zoo.

2. In your book, use the template provided below or create your own design for your fact file.3. You will need to research your animal and make sure your fact file includes information on:

- Where the animal is normally found and what its natural habitat is like- Basic description- what is the height/ weight of the animal, does their appearance differ

from male to female or from where their habitat is- What the animal eats? Plants? Animals? Be specific.- Is it dangerous to humans?- Any other interesting facts about the animal

Bramley Church of England Primary Task 6: Plan, Create and Draw a Zoo map

Your task today is to design and draw a map of your zoo.

Have a look at these maps from zoos around Britain to help you get some ideas and understand what a good zoo map look likes.

https://www.marwell.org.uk/zoo/explore/whats-at-marwell-zoo

https://www.edinburghzoo.org.uk/plan-your-visit/day-planner/maps-and-guides/

You can explore each map in more detail by following/clicking on the link below each map.

Bramley Church of England PrimaryYour map will need to include (tick when you have included them on your map)

An entrance A gift shop and or cafe Toilets

A picnic area At least 10 different animals and enclosures

Paths and roads for people to walk on

You might also want to include:

A play area An education centre Some fun ridesA transport system like a

train or a bus for people to get around the zoo easily

Ice cream hutsSpecial exhibits like a

tropical/reptile house or an aquarium

A car park Activities like face painting and Keeper talksWhen designing your zoo you should think about:

How you can make it easy for people to walk around and see all the exhibits. Which animals can share enclosures? That the enclosures are the right size for the animals in them. Where you place the parts that aren’t animal enclosures like the toilets. Do you have a good range of animals?

Before you draw your map it would be a good idea to plan out the exhibitions and attractions you want in your zoo, this way you know what you are including and how big it needs to be. If you look at the maps you can see that they use different symbols and pictures and a key to tell visitors what is at the zoo, don’t forget to include them in yours.

If you are in year 4 and want an extra challenge look at the map of Adelaide Zoo. They have created a grid and used coordinates to guide visitors to their exhibits, add this to your map.

https://www.adelaidezoo.com.au/visitor-information/

You can draw your zoo in your home learning book or on a plain sheet of paper or if you are feeling adventurous why not make a model of it after you have drawn it.

Bramley Church of England PrimaryTask 9: Animal Soundscape – Upload on Seesaw

In the animal enclosure there are many sounds created by the animals, what they are doing and the surroundings. This is a safari soundscape https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceHQCmorbBE

Notice how there are sounds which are happening at the same time as each other. Some are louder/quieter/faster/slower.

Watch these links to help you with ideas for your own zoo soundscape, some have sounds but some do not. Think about the noise the trees would make as they sway in the wind, the sound of the animals’ footsteps, the birds/insects in the background and the sounds of the animals interacting with each other. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GsvgKu1060

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjG34Vysszo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i18nuXzJrVQ

Today you are going to create a soundscape which shows the sounds of your chosen enclosure. Begin by choosing an animal enclosure at your zoo. It could be one of the above or it could be different.

Try to think about:

· What would be happening in the enclosure and so what sounds would be heard.

· What sounds would be louder or quieter.

Which sounds would be at the same time or be one after the other.

How you can create these sounds. Please make sure you ask your parents before using items from around the house.

Create your soundscape for your enclosure and then add it on to Seesaw for your teacher to listen to. In the comments box you could write what you have included in your soundscape.

How to take care of an elephant

In order to keep the elephant clean, they will need a good scrubbing at least once a week. Using a special shower stall, hose them all over – make sure you get them behind the ears. On a day-to day basis, make sure elephants tusks are well trimmed and inspect their mouths

to make sure their teeth are clean. As elephants love to eat, weighing them daily is important to make sure they are growing at

a healthy rate - you will need very large weighing scales. Elephants are fantastic swimmers, so a place for them to exercise this way is essential. Elephants love to roam, run and strut, therefore a large area where they have the freedom

to move is very important in giving them the necessary exercise. Hay, hay and hay is needed. An adult elephant can eat roughly 300 pounds (about 140

kilograms) of hay a day - you will need to have good contact with a local farmer. For a bit of variety, elephants can eat a variety of plants so see which other wild shrubs,

plants and trees you can feed it – the more, the better.

Bramley Church of England PrimaryTask 13: A diary entry as an animal in a Zoo

1. Think about an animal in a zoo. How do you think they feel about it? That is what you are going to do today! Below is a series of pictures of animals to get you thinking.

2. Chose the animal you are going to write as and decide whether they are happy being in the zoo, or unhappy.

3. Write a diary entry, as your chosen animal, about a day they experience at the zoo. You can use the senses for inspiration to get you going: what can the animal see/hear/feel/smell/taste? Use what you learned earlier on in the week about what different things zookeepers get animals to do (such as displays) for inspiration too.

Franz Marc was a famous German painter who lived from 1880-1916. He enjoyed painting animals on bright and colourful backgrounds. He often painted the animals in unusual colours too.

We would like you to create your own Franz Marc inspired artwork. Choose an animal and make sure you have a bright and colourful background. Remember your animal doesn’t have to be its usual colours. You could use colouring pencils, felt tips, pastels, paint or even collage, whatever you have at home!
