“Quiz Question: What is a baby seal called?”

Maths:Ratio = A ratio is a way to show a relationship or compare two numbers of the same kind. We use ratios to compare things of the same type. For example, we may use a ratio to compare the number of boys to the number of girls in your class room”

Your Maths resources are on the home learning page (it is split into three tasks). There is the first main task where you should aim to complete only certain parts of it – some of the resource is repeated so don’t do it more than once! It builds from very simple concepts so you understand the relationship and then moves on to slightly more complex numbers. Only complete the 3-star part of this resource (page 7 onwards). The second task involves applying ratio to word problems. For this task, aim to complete all three different parts (1-star to 3-star). It will really hammer home how ratio works and would have been the sort of thing you would have had to do during the SATs had they not been cancelled. It should give you an idea of the level needed before secondary school – hopefully, you should see it’s not too bad. The extension is there to show how ratio can be simplified to essentially just numbers. It is no harder than the previous tasks but gives even more work for the keen students amongst you!

Literacy – ‘The Present’: Synopsis: “'The Present' is a short 4-minute animation created by Jacob Frey.

The film is about a young boy who seems to prefer his computer games to anything else.  Nothing can seem to drag him away. Until his mother leaves him a gift…an adorable puppy. The boy thinks the puppy is cool until he realises that the puppy has a leg missing.”

The work today is aimed at some of you who have been playing slightly too many video games! We may be in lockdown but there are plenty of other things you could be doing (I’m only joking; I’ve been playing Lego Harry Potter so I’m just as bad). Your writing task comes in two parts. First, watch the video and pause it every 30 seconds. Consider how the boy feels towards the dog at each 30-second interval and write it down. Does it change? Why? It is important to note the change of emotions throughout the short film – there is an ‘arc’ of emotions that the boy feels as the video progresses. Also consider how the dog might feel – this is a new situation for the dog, too! Next, I want you to consider the mother’s motives for selecting this dog. What justifications can you make for her decision? Why did she choose this dog? It goes deeper than just the ‘similarity’ the boy and dog have. What do you think the mother was hoping would happen? Try to write down as many reasons (or justifications) for the mother’s actions. You could even consider the worries that she may have had – there was no guarantee to how the boy would react. This short film should be slightly more uplifting than yesterday but it is important that you try to write from different perspectives as well as write in different styles.Available links below (hold ‘ctrl’ and click on the hyperlink to open them):

Geography:Imports = An import is a good or service bought in one country that was produced in another. The goods come into the country.

Exports = Exports are the goods and services produced in one country and purchased by residents of another country. The goods go out of the country.

The Geography resource can be found on the home learning page. Only complete the tasks from page 3 – page 7. Imports and exports are an interesting thing to consider – we use lots of things in this country that we need to buy from other countries and vice versa. Particularly now (and in the near future), this will be an area that all countries need to look at and consider whether they are importing or exporting too many goods (with both Brexit and the current lockdown situation).
