FLOWERS Session Focus Children will help to plant flowers in their outdoor environment. Children will take a closer look at flowers. Science (UW): Talk about features of their own environment; Make observations of animals and plants. Preparation Prepare an area for planting some flowers beforehand. Associated Risk Assessments Generic Site RA; Collecting & Handling Natural Materials RA. Resources Gardening tools, seeds/ bulbs, watering cans, (Extension Activity: Happa Zome) Session Outline •Initial discussion: Can the children spot any flowers in their outdoor environment? Do they know the names of any flowers? What do they know about flowers? Can they name parts of a flower? Which creatures like flowers? • Explain that they are going to help plant some flowers in their outdoor environment to help the bees and their outdoor area look nicer. • Split the children into two groups; one group planting and the other doing the extension activity, Happa Zome, then swap over. • Can the children talk about how they can care for the flowers as they grow? (e.g. water & weed them) Differentiation: LA- Guidance with the activities. HA- Discuss facts and thoughts about flowers. Extension: Happa Zome. You could provide some flowers for the children to dissect, or a flower ID sheet for them to match the flower types. ENVIRONMENT Can leave the outdoor environment how they found it. Starts to identify evergreen and deciduous trees and talk about differences. Compares different tree species by their leaf shapes. Names parts of a tree. Identifies some wildlife using simple age-specific guides. Takes part in a variety of scavenger hunts.
