Altenheim Senior Living has received a Quality Improvement Grant from the Ohio Department on Aging to provide start-up funding to adopt the program, Opening Minds Through Art (OMA). The Ohio Department on Aging website states that this is an “award-winning, evidence-based, intergenerational art-making program for people with dementia. OMA was developed at the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 2007. It is rooted in the person-centered philosophy of resident care. The program has received several distinguished recognitions including Best Practice Award from Leading Age (2011) and “Program of Distinction” award from Generations United (2015-2017). A Message from CEO Paul PsotaSpring is a time for all things to renew, grow and flourish.

This is never more true than Spring 2017 at Altenheim Senior Living, as we celebrate our 125th Anniversary!

Our campus is renewing. Shurmer Place is being refreshed with new paint, wallcovers and carpeting. Upgrades are planned

for the memory wing, including an expanded dining room, a new family lounge and a snoezelen room to help calm agitated residents.

We are growing. The construction of Shurmer Place Memory Assisted Living continues to progress. It is amazing to see drone footage of the progress that has been made over the past few months. The exterior and interior environments are designed according to principles of evidence based design. Accordingly, decisions about the building and surrounding grounds are centered on scientific research. The goal is to achieve the best possible outcomes for residents. Guiding principles have been developed by The Alzheimer’s Association, the Center for Health Design and Planetree. Our architect has implemented these principles by creating a household design, cozy resident neighborhoods, wayfinding cues, special lighting, relaxing and restorative outdoor areas, and appropriate safety features. All these features will positively impact the residents’ physical, psychological and social well-being.

The construction of Altenheim Therapy Rehab Center is also on schedule. The center will feature a 4,000 square foot, state-of-the-art therapy gym for short term in-patient and out-patient physical, occupational and speech therapy services. Aquatic therapy will be offered.

We are flourishing. Shurmer Place residents participated in Mardi Gras and Carnival parties. Residents enjoyed a Vintage Vanity Antique Show. It featured jewelry worn by Ohio Presidents’ first ladies. We celebrated Black History month with a Harlem Renaissance program and a Night at the Apollo. The Aging Well series continues with seminar topics including cardiac health, and strength and balance. Altenheim residents are looking forward to spring and working in flower beds. They are enjoying the music therapist, family bingo on Saturday afternoons, cooking club and Tai Chi. Community events include free monthly Lunch and Learns, and seminars from our Memory Care series including Mindful Eating... Using Food to Enhance Our Memories.

The programs and services we provide are made possible by our donors’ generosity. Please make a gift to the Annual Appeal. Your gift will make a difference. You will help create better tomorrows for the residents.

Enjoy Spring! Paul Psota

Gregory Wiemken, D.P.M. has a rich history with Altenheim. As a part of the Physician Panel, he provides foot care to residents. He sees residents twice a month, seeing both independent and assisted living and long term care residents. Many of the residents he sees on our campus, were patients in his private practice. He states, “It’s like seeing old friends.”

He has been practicing in Strongsville since 1991, after completing a residency at Cambridge Hospital in Massachusetts.

He believes Altenheim is a big part of the community and is good for the community. He has the opportunity to provide services throughout Strongsville and neighboring communities. Dr. Wiemken states, “What sets Altenheim apart is the

staff consistency and quality care I see here. Altenheim is the gold standard. They do things how they should be done.”

Because of his strong roots in the community and to Altenheim, Dr. Wiemken supports The Altenheim Foundation. He is a yearly donor to the Annual Appeal at the Giving Society level. He believes it is important to give back. He witnesses first-hand the outstanding care that is given in a home like environment on our campus. As he states, “What better contribution can we all make than to support such a fine organization, right here in Strongsville.” n

Altenheim is pleased to announce a new service line, Hands-On Physical Therapy Specialists (Hands-On). Hands-On has been providing out-patient physical and occupational therapies to Northeast Ohio

residents of all ages for over 15 years. Nancy Nebenzahl, OT/L, CHT, an occupational therapist and certified hand therapist, started and developed the practice right here in Strongsville.

Hands-On has developed a stellar reputation during that time for providing quality out-patient therapies. It is one of only a few local providers to offer the specialty services of a certified hand therapist. Altenheim is proud to add Hands-On to its service lines. Therapists providing services will remain the same.

The personal attention clients receive sets Hands-On apart. A dedicated therapist works one on one with each client. The therapy is goal driven and affordable. Therapy programs are custom designed to meet client goals. Clients are not required to be referred by, or come from a hospital.

Naming OpportunitiesIt all started with a vision by a group of volunteer women from Cleveland’s German American community. They envisioned providing a safe haven for the area’s women in their golden years. For the past 125 years, Altenheim’s Board of Directors, management, staff and volunteers have expanded that vision, to encompass Northeast Ohio’s most innovative senior care. Altenheim Senior Living now is truly a Life Plan Community, allowing seniors the comfort of aging in place.

As we celebrate our 125th Anniversary, Altenheim has dedicated itself to providing what experts say is the future of adult senior living. We are expanding to offer a 32 bed short-term rehab center with private living quarters and state-of-the-art therapy gym, including aqua therapies; and, a 38 apartment memory assisted living residence for those living with Alzheimer’s and other related dementias. Spacious, beautiful apartments will be available in a safe, nurturing environment. Living spaces have been designed based on gold standard industry principles to foster residents’ well-being, familiarity and a sense of freedom and control over their daily living.

We invite you to participate in our Naming Opportunities Campaign for these new state-of-the-art additions to our campus.

Once again Altenheim Senior Living is at a crossroads... a defining moment that will affect the lives of thousands of area seniors, and allow us to continue to be the innovative leader in serving our community’s most vulnerable senior citizens.

You can help us and at the same time create a lasting legacy by participating in our Naming Opportunities Campaign. Please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement, 440-238-3361 ext. 171. n

Hands-On service specialties include custom elbow, wrist, thumb and hand splint fabrication, neck and back rehab, hip and knee rehab, semi-custom foot orthotics, and soft tissue mobilization and muscle energy techniques. Dry needling is also available, multiple therapists being certified in this technique. Dry needling is a technique

therapists use (where allowed by state law) to treat myofascial (muscle) pain. The technique uses a “dry” needle, one without medication or injection, inserted through the skin into areas of the muscle, known as trigger points.

Hands-On staff has over 70 years of combined experience in helping patients to eliminate pain and improve function so that patients are able to enjoy life.

Hands-On serves the public at 11925 Pearl Road, Suite 202, Strongsville. The public will also be served at Altenheim’s new Therapy Rehab Center upon its completion. n

Annual Appeal

Maintaining a sense of purpose is significant to seniors. After spending their younger years being defined by careers, parenthood and service to others, life can feel uncertain once those responsibilities have been lifted. Creative activities encourage a sense of competence, purpose and personal growth. More importantly, they strengthen problem-solving skills and focus, alleviate boredom, encourage social interaction and improve one’s overall sense of well-being.

Your gift to the Annual Appeal will help us provide important art and

music therapy programs and art activities for our residents.
