it was a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economshyic achievements of American workers It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength prosperity and well-being of our country The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take

were outlined in the first proposal of the holiday-a street parade to exhibit to the public the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations of the community followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers

and their families This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest producshytion the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy It is appropriate therefore that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nations strength freedom and leadershyship-the American worker

Several topics were discussed this evening in regard to evaluating what we have been doingand how to ma ke things better

Garden and clean lip committee - The garden has been an added attraction to the Harvey House and looks nice as it may have looked when Fred

Harvey would have been in business There was discussion about a plan to make it better for next year

o Need a sign at the lot to explain the community garden and how to become involved in the garden

o Water is a priority for the garden in the future

o Making the other half of that lot a Christmas Tree Farm to raise trees for sale

o Planting fruit trees and other trees and making flower gardens to build on the beautification and utility of the area

o Have pumpkins for sale and Christmas trees for sale each fall and winter

o The Odell property that was cleaned up earlier this year has been sold to Andy Cogdill who has leveled the property and has made it look much

better

Baseball field and possible tournaments for next year

o Get started early in the spring with a pre-season tournament

o Sell concessions and try to get a nice prize amount for 1st place of $50000

o Work on the field and concession stand

o This could bring people to the community for ball games and help area businesses

Gym Usage - rollerskating and open nights at the gym

o The skating has been a good project and starting August 27th skating will be available for students in the gymnashlm

o Need to get the gymnasium measured so that a capacity can be determined for the gymnasium so that donkey basketball can be followed up on

for this fall yet Max said he would help Holly and Phoebe measure the seats and figure out capacity of the building

Harvey House -talked about working with the historical society to come up with people to man the Harvey house on a regular basis so that regushy

lar hours could be established and then we could get a sign put on the high way regarding the Harvey House and that is at no cost Bob will reshy

search how many hours or days per week the museum would need to be open to qualify for the signage

Cassody Motorcycle Rides - first Sunday of each month starting in April and ending in November

o How can we capitalize on getting those bikers to stop in Florence on the way back from their rides Can we have businesses open for riders on

those Sundays with different options for lunch and visits to the mercantile or the Harvey House or local restaurants we need something to draw

people to town to help the businesses or groups in Florence

The Barbeque Contests

o Talk to Les Allison about the barbeque contest to see if that is something that can be revived again

The next meeting of the group will be on Monday the 26th of September at 7 PM
