SFC formed their scrappy non- profit about four years ago around a dream of connecting greenspace along the south fork of Peachtree Creek. To our great de- light, they set their sights on Zonolite Park as “Phase I” of their efforts. They enlisted the talents of landscape ar- chitect Susan Stainback (Sylvatica Studio) to create a master plan, and the attention they brought to the Zonolite Park site spurred the EPA to clean up the area, a portion of which had been contaminated with asbestos back in the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s by manu- facturer W.R. Grace. After the cleanup, SFC volunteers spent the next year installing a $10,000 donation of dogwoods, maples, and other species from Trees Atlanta. They also wrote several grants, including one on behalf of Dekalb County, which netted the funds the county needed to begin real- izing SFC’s dream of a permanent, well- graded, well-drained .08 mile trail system through Zonolite Park’s 12 acres. It’s a lot more complicated than you might imagine to build trails that will stand the test of time. First, you have to mark off the trail align- ment. Next, the trail must be graded to drain properly. Then there’s a three-layer process of construction involving landscape fabric, a gravel base, and a top layer of hardwood mulch. This is the work currently underway on the section of trail from the park entrance to the wooden bridge. Next comes construc- tion of an attractive trailhead with benches and signage. IMPROVED PARK TRAILS for ZonoliteIn 2013 the GA Department of Natural Resources awarded Dekalb County about $80000 in grant money to build trails in Zonolite Park We are now seeing those improvements come to life

We here at Floataway would like to sa-

lute our friends at South Fork Con-

servancy SFC formed their scrappy non-

profit about four years ago around a dream

of connecting greenspace along the south

fork of Peachtree Creek To our great de-

light they set their sights on Zonolite Park as

ldquoPhase Irdquo of their efforts

They enlisted the talents of landscape ar-

chitect Susan Stainback (Sylvatica Studio) to

create a master plan and the attention they

brought to the Zonolite Park site spurred

the EPA to clean up the area a portion of

which had been contaminated with asbestos

back in the lsquo50s lsquo60s and lsquo70s by manu-

facturer WR Grace After the cleanup SFC

volunteers spent the next year installing a

$10000 donation of dogwoods maples

and other species from Trees Atlanta They

also wrote several grants including one

on behalf of Dekalb County which netted

the funds the county needed to begin real-

izing SFCrsquos dream of a permanent well-

graded well-drained 08 mile trail system

through Zonolite Parkrsquos 12 acres Itrsquos a lot

more complicated than you might imagine

to build trails that will stand the test of time

First you have to mark off the trail align-

ment Next the trail must be graded to drain

properly Then therersquos a three-layer process

of construction involving landscape fabric a

gravel base and a top layer of hardwood

mulch This is the work currently underway

on the section of trail from the park entrance

to the wooden bridge Next comes construc-

tion of an attractive trailhead with benches

and signage South Fork Conservancy is

overseeing this process as we speak
