help• Flipping can be done at your own pace• Growing evidence shows that flipping the classroom has improved
grades, standardized test results, graduation rates, and more.
I Flip, You Flip, We All FlipSetting up a Flipped Classroom Presented By Keith Hughes
What it Is Not• An online course
• A replacement of the traditional teacher by using video
• Students spending class time staring at a computer screen
• Students working alone in isolation
Is• A reverse of what is being done as
homework and what is being done in class.
• Videos are watched at home, changing the teacher’s role. Teacher becomes proactive and hands on.
• Online content is viewed at home, leaving class time for hands on activities and personal instruction.
• Better use of class time, with hands on, engaging, involved learning.
4 Stages to Flipping according to Dr. Gerstein
• Experiential Stage -Introduces students and peaks their interest.
• Concept Exploration Stage-Independent learning
• Meaning Making Stage-Hands on activity in the classroom
• Demonstration and Application Stage- Some type of assessment that can be measured.
Important Things to Remember
Clearly explain the purpose of the reverse instruction to students. Stress the importance of the lectures, students need to understand that they
cannot “zone out” and while watching videos or listening to lectures. They should complete some sort of notes outline and write down questions that they may have.
Hold the students accountable. Check for lecture notes and give credit. This will help ensure that the students are actually viewing the lecture.
BEWARE OF TECHNICAL PROBLEMS!! Technology is not perfect. Sometimes things do not work the way we want them to. Always have a back-up plan such as loading your lectures to a jump-drive or burning them to a CD. This is also useful for those students who do not have internet at home.
Use a centralized source for distributing content. This will eliminate confusion and allow for updates and improvement's
Plan to use class time productively, you will have more time to complete hands on activities.
