Highlights of Hayabusa2

Hayabusa2 is the 2nd Japanese sample return mission to small body.JAXA launched Hayabusa2 in 2014, which will explore the C-type asteroid Ryugu (1999JU3), and will return back to the Earth in 2020.

• Round-trip mission– High specific impulse ion engine for continuous-thrust trajectory control.

• In-situ science at “Ryugu”– 1.5year proximity operation at “Ryugu”– Four landers, four remote science instruments.

• Touch down & sample collection– Two normal touch down, one pin-point touch down (to the artificial

crater) are planned.• Artificial crater generation

– Kinetic impact on the asteroid surface to create a 2m-class crater.– Sub-surface structure of the asteroid can be acquired.

The spacecraft carriesan impactor.

The impactor collides to thesurface of the asteroid.

The sample will be obtainedfrom the newly created crater.

Launch The spacecraft observes the asteroid, releases the small rovers and the lander, and executes multiple samplings.

Prep. for Proximity Operation

• Two Types of Practice Planned– LSSP (Landing Sites Selection Process) Training

• Rapid consensus building and decision making among engineers and participating scientists for 3 TD, 3 lander deployment sites and cratering site.

• 6 months, offline workflow simulation participated by actual players, using a simulated asteroid model.

– H/HIL (Human/Hardware-In-the-Loop) Training• Wallclock practice for critical operations• Human / Hardware-interacted navigation and

guidance participated by actual operators using a simulated asteroid model.

• Real-time asteroid CG generation, TT&C round trip delay featured.

Ryugu Observation Campaign

10

In this summer, (162173) Ryugu isin opposition, and it will be up tothe magnitude of 18th. Since this isthe last chance of observationsbefore Hyabusa2 arrives at Ryugu,we will have the observationcampaign of Ryugu from July 1 toAugust 15.

The ground observation team ofHayabusa2 will also try to observeRyugu.

Conclusion

• Hayabusa2 is flying normally. The first long term ion engine burn was completed successfully on May 21, 2016.

• The next ion engine burn will be in the next November, lasting for 6 months.

• Inorbit engineering testing and scientific observations are performed regularly to take full advantage of the interplanetary cruise opportunity.

• We are on schedule. Arrival at Ryugu will be June-July 2018.• We are planning two training for the prox. operation, LSSP and

H/HIL, for quick and reliable response / decision making.• Ryugu observation campaign (final opportunity before arrival) are

being planned in July-August this year.
