Welcome to Fleet Update #1, a semi-regular downloadable publication that previews the latest models for the game and provides you with playtest rules that will allow you to get to grips with them on the battlefield as quickly as possible!

While not officially sanctioned for tournament level play, we encourage everyone to use the rules presented in the Fleet Updates for your own games at home or at your local club, as you should find them solid and useable.

Future Updates, already being worked on right now, will include entire fleet lists and campaigns for you to try out. In this issue, we take a look at the latest models released for A Call to Arms: Star Fleet along with the playtest rules for Escorts.

As the General War progressed, all the Alpha Octant empires designed and built more powerful ships. When massed in late-war-era fleets, these ships were capable of hurling massive waves of seeking weapons, often far too much for any one defending ship to survive. The solution was to develop a class of warship specifically designed to cope with these waves of seeking weapons. Escort ships are conversions of standard warships emphasizing defensive firepower. Having one or two of these special escorts in a fleet greatly reduces this threat.

New TraiTEscort is a new trait A Call to Arms: Star Fleet.

Escort: Due to the specialised electronics suite in this vessel, this ship may contribute its phasers, drones and plasma-D weapons to the Defensive Fire of any friendly ship within

COMBAT ESCORTS8” and within the arc of these weapons. As always, each weapon may only be fired once per turn and may be used to conduct Defensive Fire or attack enemy ships as normal, at the player’s discretion.

New weapoN SySTemMany escort ships are equipped with the phaser-G, specifically designed to knock out incoming seeking weapons.

Gatling Phasers: Originally developed by the Hydran Kingdom, these weapons function by firing multiple bursts of short-ranged phaser-3 fire. It should be noted that gatling phasers are used only by the Hydrans (most warships have them) and Federation escorts (not their standard warships). Any Orion ship can have a single gatling phaser in one optional Weapon mount.

AegisThe fire control system used on escort ships is known as Aegis, named for the shield carried by the Greek god Zeus. Aegis escorts serve important roles in the Star Fleet Universe and they are now available to A Call to Arms: Star Fleet.

A dreadnought, crippled in a large fleet battle, is limping back to a repair dock with a few escorts. The enemy fleet was similarly mauled, and they only have a few light ships available to chase down and destroy the dreadnought.

Fleets: The defending player selects a dreadnought from his fleet list and a 500 point fleet with no ships costing more than 130 points. The attacker selects a fleet of 500 points with no ships costing more than 130 points.

Pre Battle Preparation: The defending force is deployed first, anywhere within its deployment zone. The attacking fleet is deployed anywhere within its deployment zone. Stellar debris is generated randomly.

Scenario Rules: The dreadnought is Crippled and has a number of damage points remaining equal to one less than its Crippled score. It has the following critical hits at the start of the game; Impulse Drive 3, Dilithium Chamber 2, Crew 4 and Shields 2. It does have shields (but subtract the effects for critical hits). None of the critical hits are Escalating (fires have been put out but damage has not been repaired). It still has the Command and Tractor Beam traits, but all other traits have been lost. The dreadnought may only leave the table from the defender’s edge.

Game Length: Until the end of the turn the dreadnought leaves the table or is destroyed, or until all attacking ships are destroyed or have left the table.

Victory and Defeat: If the dreadnought leaves the map the defending player wins. If it is destroyed the attacking player wins.

ORION OK6 REVIEWI received an Orion OK6 cruiser for participating at a Mongoose tournament. I had liked the look of the renders, but looking at renders is always different to holding a model in your hand.

It is a three-piece model, with the hull (the Klingon rear hull and the forward section of the Orion raider) and two nacelles. It is the first multipart Orion ship but is pretty simple to assemble. Almost all the Starline 2500 ships are suitable for players without eons of modelling experience to draw from. It is a crisp, clean ‘sculpt’ with plenty of detail on the CR forward section, the Klingon hull block house and the engines. For painters good at freehand (or someone with some handy nose art transfers) there are flat areas on the top of the raider forward hull, the wings of the Klingon rear hull, and the underside of the Klingon rear hull. I’ve been impressed with the freehand on the Mongoose display miniatures, and though I doubt I could live up to that, I’m trying to come up with a scheme that does the model justice.

Cleaning the model up wasn’t too difficult, there was a little pitting on the front of one of the engines, which was easily fixed with a craft knife and some liquid green stuff (which has proved very useful in my modelling endeavours), a little infilling by the blockhouse and some flash. It took all of about five minutes to clean the model up ready for assembly (after which I took the pictures of the cleaned up pieces).

I assemble my Star Fleet models using superglue and small dabs of liquid greenstuff, to both hold the model and fill any slight gaps in the join. The engines are sculpted to fit the rear hull at the correct angle for Klingon engines, so it could not get much simpler. I put a small dab of liquid greenstuff at each end of the join, superglue in the middle, pressed the two pieces together and held them for about a minute. This was repeated with the other wing piece. I tidied up any escaping liquid greenstuff from the joins with a craft knife, and applied a thin layer of glue to the underside of the joins.

Overall, clean up, assembly and picture-taking took about twenty-five minutes.

You can see from the pictures how nice a sculpt it is. It is the largest Orion ship currently out, and combined with the Orion ships from the Klingon vs. Orion squadron box, it gives me an Orion fleet of over 500 points.

It’s a large and impressive model compared to the other Orion ships, wider than and twice as long as the Salvage Cruiser and dwarfing the Light Raider. It now forms the centrepiece of my small Orion fleet. With larger ships, you can see the potential of the shift to a larger scale with the increased and enhanced detail, and how computer-assisted design can enable a precision hard to achieve with conventional sculpting methods. The Orion stealth arrays are precisely done and just waiting to be picked out, as are the details on the Klingon blockhouse and engines.

This ship make a good flagship for a small fleet and there will be a fair few admirals whose last sight will be this beauty swooping into their rear arc…
