Another great win for Rob Lowe and Stephen Shephard on Eastwood Motor Clubs Phoenix Stages, but this was followed by another gearbox failure while competing on the Hilton Gott Centenary Volvo Stages at Snetterton, looks like a lucky 7 on the door helps.

Pay attention Steve! Thanks to Phil Jermyn for the picture

Sadly another disappointing cancellation to report with the Premier Rally falling victim to ever increasing demands on organisers for Health and Safety plans etc but the Dukeries Rally at Donington received a full entry within two days, so this is something for us to look forward to. Thanks to Clive and Anji for another great camping weekend, the weather was nothing like as bad as the weathermen had forecast and the field event went well. All we needed was a few more campers and barbequers, but there were lots of day visitors and Colins friends ensured that Saturday night was lively. The lack of Ogans allowed Jessica to monopolise the go-kart until she decided that she could do better than us on the autosolo course, successfully completing several clean runs. There was a soapy ski slope for the real enthusiasts and even a chance to try archery, and a couple of radio controlled cars were demonstrated. There were few takers for the Scatter that Ian had worked very hard to prepare, but this will be run later this year as a stand alone event.

REPORTS Nottingham Classic Sunday 26th July

Looking forward to Carlton motor club's second classic run of the year … this time with Mick

Hollis in the left hand seat. We knew we were in for a treat this year as we had the

advantage of already having done the route a month earlier whilst checking the road book

for John Thornhill .

We were also running on the day as the closing course car.

The Nottingham classic is a round of the HRCR scenic runs and as such attracted entrants

who are doing the series as well as a number of local regulars. The start, as for the last few

years, was Papplewick pumping station where after prompt signing on all entrants could

tuck into their “breakfast bag”. A short drivers briefing and car 1 is soon away.

The route was split into 3 with two stop overs the first being Thoresby hall.

Unfortunately the overcast day turned to rain which was to last for most of the rest of the

run which is always a shame. The second stopover was at Patchings farm and art centre. By

now it was raining quite heavy and most participants, including us, took advantage of the

excellent tea and cakes. The whole route was very cleverly put together and I wonder how

Page 5: FLAT WRITE! · Carlton and District Motor Club NewsletterSeptember 2015 Sadly another disappointing cancellation to report with the Premier Rally falling victim to

many of the entrants realised the various junctions roads that they arrived at later in the

day …. but from a different direction ! Well done John.

During the day the duties as Closer were really onerous [!] – picking up the odd arrow and

stopping at every parked up classic to make sure they were fine – All were & were just

parked up on a social break . Occasionally we pulled over to let a car overtake who had

taken a detour thus ensuring we were always last car.

Finish was back at Papplewick pumping station where all could tuck in to the great hog roost

before saying farewell for another great event.

Tally ho classic car run Sunday Aug 16th

Here's another new run for 2015 but organised by regulars “Crooked spire classics “ so one

to look forward to. This event was raising money for Weston park hospital [cancer charity]

The event had a full entry of over seventy cars and as usual signing on was a quick

straightforward affair.

This new run instead of the usual “Derbyshire” was to be a super quick tour of Lincolnshire

WW11 airfields .

The started was Dobbies garden centre at Barlborough where we were treated to bacon

butty and coffee whilst perusing the well laid out road book. The only [minor] disadvantage

was that the garden centre itself was not open until 10.00 am .Drivers briefing over and its

back to the car for a mid way start [car 37] .

The start location is ideal as within a couple of miles we are in the countryside .

The first half saw the route using the lanes of Lincolnshire to meander to the lunch halt

passing Bothamshall church ,Dunham bridge , Fossdyke , Tupholme priory. and Woodhall

Spa . Just prior to the ½ way we stopped at the RAF Metheringham memorial for a photo .

[Graham Phillpott of Carlton motor club will no doubt remember this from a few years back

when it was one of his photo shots on the Nottm classic - in the opposite direction ]

Halfway was at the Metheringham air museum and we were treated with their usual

hospitality . Highlights was a photo in front of the jet provost [supplied as a souvenir] and

the firing up of same at intervals .

The second half was a lot shorter than the first and did include, unavoidably, a lot of “A”

road . Still passing plenty of airfields.

The finish was at Cresswell crags with strict instructions that first car not to arrive before

4.00 pm. [smallish car park]. An excellent venue I've not been to for many years but by the

time we'd had our cream teas it was home time.

For reference the airfields passed/visited were Gamston, Scampton , Dunholme lodge ,

Fiskerton , Bardney , Woodhall Spa , Metheringham , Digby , Cranwell , Fulbeck , Winthorpe.

Part of the fund-raising included a raffle which had a large number of attractive prizes. I

think I speak for most that ”the prize most wanted to win “ was a weekend loan of a

Porsche Boxster . Despite buying a lot of tickets I didn't win a sausage although my brother

[who bought less tickets ] did win a quality model McLaren .

Another thanks to Noel , Tony and their helpers for the well organised event . Also thanks to

brother Terry for guiding the car round. Vince Orme

Clun classic car run Sunday 12th July

In the middle of July was the Clun run organised by Clowne motor club [named after the

village's Anglo Saxon name]

I had heard good reports of it's previous years run and there was the added bonus at the

end of a mini [i.e. small – not the car ] motor show. The organisers were blessed with a full

entry of cars for an event with one of the cheapest entry fees [£25]

Signing on was very well organised and soon sorted and a quick ponder over the road book

whilst drinking the complementary tea/coffee.

The start was the Clowne community centre and first car was away at 09.30…...

Page 7: FLAT WRITE! · Carlton and District Motor Club NewsletterSeptember 2015 Sadly another disappointing cancellation to report with the Premier Rally falling victim to

Carlton and District Motor Club NewsletterSeptember 2015

First half used some well traversed roads of north Notts ; south Yorks incl through Clumber

park , Bothamshall and Billy Button lane and past a bloodhound missile on Newington road

and then the site of the nudestock naturist festival in Wroot before reaching halfway.

Midway halt was at the south Yorkshire air museum where you also had a complementary

photo taken

Second half was also on good roads past Connisborough castle ,Billy Bremners home village,

Freddie Truman's home ,and the desirable Lingodell farm and along the oddly named Pocket

Handkerchief lane [ I feel a treasure hunt coming on !].

All too soon we're back at the finish.

The first car was due back at the finish from 14.30 . Finish venue was the same as the start

but now the playing field was being used for the additional vehicles compromising the

motor show .

Well recommended was the help yourself buffet [included in the price] .

Clowne motor club are to commended for a great value for money event [with the

additional bonus motor show] and one on my calendar for next year .

Both the run and motor show raised money for the local air ambulance.

My thanks to Robert as navigator. Vince Orme

As an aside Buckingham insurance are one of the sponsors of the run and as my renewal had

just arrived I took the opportunity of an alternative quote [I wasn't holding up much hope as

my existing renewal quotation was reasonable ] - pleasantly surprised to save £27 with the

knowledge that should I opt to winter store there will be no additional charge [last year

+£26] .

I have no connection with the firm other than as a customer.

Phoenix Stages August 4th 2015 Rob Lowe / Steve Shephard Subaru Impreza Grp A 555 A hot dry summers day dawned at Fulbeck for Eastwood's Phoenix Stages and we were looking forward to challenging for a good result with a large entry and some quick crews. Stage one Bob was a little disappointed to find we were in eighth place, but on closer inspection of the times we were only 6 seconds off 2nd place. Martin England set a fast time to take a 9 second lead after the opening test in his immaculate Mitsubishi EVO X. It was to be short lived lead though, as he was stopped on stage two with a mechanical problem with the Evo. Stage 2 was better for us though and Bob moved up to 4th, 8 seconds off the new leader Steve Marriott in his Impreza. Stage 3 saw Marriott drop time with an off and car 8, the Subaru of Martin Farrar took the lead. We closed up to 3rd nine seconds off the lead, but it was still very close throughout the top ten with only 30 seconds covering the top crews. Positions were unchanged on stage 4, we dropped a couple of seconds to the leader with a lack of grip from the hard tyres becoming evident. So Bob bought some soft Hankooks from Slick Tyres. The tyre man really struggled to fit the new rubber onto the wheels (120psi to pop them over the beads!!) so we only had two softs fitted to the rear in time for Stage 5. It was much better even with only two softs on the rear and we moved ahead of Gary Wayne’s Select Cars Subaru into second place, now only 7 seconds off the lead! With 4 softs fitted for stage 6 it was ideal for the short stages at Fulbeck, Bob was really able to get the Subaru flying and set fastest times on the next 3 stages to take a 5 second lead over Farrar and Wayne. Stage 8 saw a 30 second penalty for Farrar for cutting across the split after wrong slotting trying too hard to catch us. This meant we had a 30 second lead over Gary Wayne going into stage 9. This was a bit of a scare for us, with a hefty brush on a large haybale damaging the Impreza’s nearside front end at a chicane. Fortunately this was only superficial and we were able to continue and even extended the lead by 5 seconds!

The final stage was a clean run to seal a fantastic overall rally win for Bob and my first co-driving in the 555 Subaru! It was nice to see Phil Jermyn and family at the event and he sent the attached photo! Cheers Steve
