EditorialWelcome to our JUNE 2018 edition.

The Kangaroo Flat Community Enterprise is proud to bring you our 106th edition of FLAT MATTERS.

Excitement builds as we head towards the opening of our state of the art pool complex here in Kangaroo Flat.

It has been a remarkable journey which began back almost a decade ago and one of the early geneses for the project

was the expression of need identified for markedly improved public aquatic facilities in Kangaroo Flat and surrounds, and for Greater Bendigo more generally, as identified in the Kangaroo Flat Community Plan which was adopted by council back in 2009.

Ever since the plan was prepared, published and adopted by council, the Kangaroo Flat Community Enterprise has advocated for and helped raise funds for this project from the local community.

The countdown is now on and we cannot wait to see the finished product and say thank to those people who had the foresight to make this project happen.

In closing, we at FLAT MATTERS

would like to thank the many sponsors and community organisations that contribute to our ‘’new look’’ community newsletter FLAT MATTERS which is distributed in the Kangaroo Flat, Golden Square, Maiden Gully, Marong, Lockwood, and Big Hill region.

SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE = DOWNSIZINGBy Jeff Smith

Downsizing the family home is something many people start to think about once the kids move out and start their own family. The home that you’ve spent a lot of your life in starts to feel a little empty, and there are rooms you rarely go in anymore.

The appeal of simplifying your lifestyle, while not compromising quality or comfort is easy to understand.

With a smaller more manageable garden, less housework and less household maintenance, downsizing allows you to keep control of your lifestyle while saving you money and giving you back precious time.

There are a number of financial benefits to downsizing, from reduced utility bills to lower home insurance.

But the major benefit is the extra time you have for doing the things you enjoy. It’s easy to imagine a simpler lifestyle with more free time.

Chris Smith from Lansell Homes an industry leader in downsizing commented that this is a popular solution, and there is more to it than building a smaller home.

“My parents are about to downsize now, so Lansell understand the challenges and how to assist. We understand that folks have worked hard and are now looking to enjoy their life, with a smaller garden and less property maintenance.

People want a quality home, and quality of life. Getting all of the features of a large house into a smaller family home and providing

people with a downsizing lifestyle

is about finishing the job with a

turn-key finish.” Chris added.

There will always be memories

of that original family home,

reminiscing about children running

around, family Christmas’ and

maybe even grandkids. It’s

important to remember these

things, but it’s also important to

remember why you are taking that

next step in your life. This is your

time.

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEKTo mark National Volunteer Week, the City of Greater Bendigo has thanked its more than 500 volunteers at a morning tea event at Ulumbarra Theatre.

The City’s volunteers dedicate approximately 2,500 hours of service per month, or around 30,000 hours per year, to help deliver important services to the community.

Mayor Cr Margaret O’Rourke said it was a chance to say thank you to all volunteers for their continued efforts.

The City is very fortunate to have so many passionate and dedicated volunteers, many of whom have been with the organisation for many years. We couldn’t do all that we do without the help of all our volunteers. Whether it’s supporting Bendigo’s most popular festivals or assisting tourists to experience the best of Greater Bendigo, volunteers are critical for us to provide the services we do.

Volunteering helps create stronger, more connected and more resilient communities.

We always welcome new volunteers, so if you have been thinking about putting your hand up to help, there are plenty of fantastic opportunities available with the City of Greater Bendigo.”

Volunteers support the City across a range of services including:

• Home visiting program and Social Support Group

• Bendigo Art Gallery and Post Office Gallery

• The Capital and Ulumbarra theatres

• Bendigo Easter Festival

• Bendigo and Heathcote Visitor Centres

• Yo Bendigo

• Landcare and the Environment

Anyone interested in volunteering is encouraged to contact the City

on 5434 6000.

COUNCIL OFFICER DEPARTSCity of Greater Bendigo Director Corporate Performance Kerryn Ellis will depart the organisation in July for a new challenge in Melbourne.

Ms Ellis will take on the role of General Manager Corporate Services at the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC).

City Chief Executive Officer Craig Niemann thanked Ms Ellis for her great leadership and commitment to the organisation.

“Kerryn has made an outstanding contribution, particularly in enhancing the internal functions of the organisation across governance, human resources, IT, customer service and finance.

She also helped lead the implementation of a new organisation structure and assisted Council and the organisation to manage changes in the Local Government sector, such as rate capping and the Local Government Act review.

Kerryn has delivered unwavering support to her executive and senior management colleagues and has led her directorate with great enthusiasm. The City will certainly miss Kerryn but we wish her the very best in her new role.”

Ms Ellis said she would continue to watch with interest the success of Greater Bendigo.

“It has been a privilege to work with such a dedicated and talented group of people. Greater Bendigo is a wonderful community and I firmly believe Council staff have a direct role in making it a welcoming and appealing place where people want to live.

I have been proud of the work of the Corporate Performance directorate and thank the team for their dedication to improving internal processes.’’

STORMWATER UPGRADEThe City of Greater Bendigo will push ahead with a Planning Scheme Amendment C236 to apply the public acquisition overlay to part of 264 High Street, Kangaroo Flat.

The matter was discussed at the May meeting of council and the amendment is set to allow compulsory acquisition by the council for the upgrade of an existing stormwater drain.

The council resolved to adopt the recommendations detailed for each of the submissions and forward the adopted Amendment to the Minister for Planning to approve.

The move follows complaints from adjoining landowners and the Engineering Unit of the council determined that the drain needs to be upgraded to operate effectively and also to facilitate it’s ongoing maintenance requirements.

The open stormwater drain carries stormwater collected mainly from Bunnings Warehouse and the Lansell Plaza Shopping Centre sites for discharge in to the Bendigo Creek.

• • •

LAND REZONINGMelbourne based company Phileo Australia is planning on building 48 industrial lots in Kangaroo Flat.

However the move will require the approval of the planning minister as the land will need to be rezoned from general residential to industrial.

The Amendment proposes to rezone the land at 1A Railway Street, Kangaroo Flat from General Residential Zone to Industrial 3 Zone, delete Development Plan Overlay 17 (Former Rocklea Mills Site, 239-249 High Street, Kangaroo Flat )

Phileo Australia is the company that built the original Rocklea Homemaker Centre in High Street Kangaroo Flat and then sold the site for a reported $35 million in 2016.

The proposed new development comprises 7.5 hectares of land which faces Railway Street to the east of the present Bendigo Homemaker Centre.

CITY WELCOMES HUB PROJECTThe City of Greater Bendigo has welcomed a contribution of $16M towards the development of a Gov Hub.

The Gov Hub will be located on the site of the Lyttleton Terrace office and the City will enter into a long-term lease in the new building.

Mayor Cr Margaret O’Rourke said the announcement was fantastic news for the city.

“A Gov Hub is considered the new way of doing business across regional Victoria, with the main focus being to improve the customer experience by having a range of government services co-located in one building.

The City currently operates cross seven sites in central Bendigo. This is an opportunity for all staff and services to be located in one building and to vacate the other sites for commercial use by other businesses, further revitalising and activating central Bendigo.

The Gov Hub will be home to a range of State Government agencies and departments, so it will serve as a one-stop-shop for residents, providing them with a centralised, convenient and efficient way to interact with these services.

The Gov Hub is expected to accommodate more than 1,000 jobs in central Bendigo when complete and 70 jobs during construction. This will help to activate the northern-end of the city and deliver a range of economic benefits, including support for neighbouring retail and hospitality businesses.

The Gov Hub represents an investment in liveability. Bendigo joins regional cities like Ballarat and La Trobe Valley that are developing Gov Hubs, recognising they are critical to improving service delivery to customers.

The City looks forward to working with Regional Development Victoria to progress this exciting project.”

The announcement follows an allocation of $1M in last year’s State Budget to investigate the feasibility of developing a Gov Hub in Bendigo.

KANGAROO FLAT FIRE BRIGADE NEWS

On Sunday 22 April, Kangaroo Flat Fire Brigade opened its doors to the community.

Between 10am and 2pm, the brigade held a number of activities, demonstrations, and stalls for members of the public to come and view, try and experience.

It is estimated that approximately 500-600 people passed through the station during the

Open Day.

KFFB invited other agencies and services to attend also, which saw an ambulance from Ambulance Victoria, a rescue unit from Bendigo SES, a highway patrol vehicle from Victoria Police and the Bendigo CFA ladder platform - as well as other historic fire trucks (including an 1890s Shand Mason horse-drawn fire escape ladder).

Guided station tours were popular with the local community, as well as the many

varied firefighting demonstrations and SES undertaking a mock rescue.

The younger generations were more than looked after also, with fairy floss, jumping castle, giant board games and popcorn.

This Open Day was the second of its kind since the brigade officially opened its doors in 2016.

The Kangaroo Flat Fire Brigade has proudly served the Kangaroo Flat community as a 100% volunteer brigade since 1873.

DOG PARK UPDATE By Alix Steed

With two new dog parks in the budget for the 2018 year, both Kangaroo Flat and Eaglehawk’s four legged friends are set to benefit greatly when both parks open at the end of the June 2018.

Allingham Street will be the home for the Kangaroo flat dog park and will boast a fully enclosed large and small dog play area surrounded by an established reserve which will link in with current walking tracks in the area.

In the initial design plan, the budget allows for the fencing of both the large and small dog play areas, water access for a pet drinking fountain and the establishment of two double lock gates to allow easy and safe access into the park.

Council has further identified other features that may be included in the coming years budgets such as a dog agility playground, seating and shelter.

Unlike the current Harcourt Park, both Kangaroo Flat and Eaglehawk dog parks will not have any dam water access. However, given the ongoing problems with blue green algae at Harcourt Park, this seems to be a safer and better option to exclude dams from the new parks.

It is council’s hope that the dog park will get just as much use on a daily basis as the current Harcourt Park and open up more opportunity for residents, especially the elderly to attend without having to travel to far to exercise their dogs.

BENDIGO NORTHERN GROUP CWA KANGAROO FLAT BRANCH

We are looking for more local women to join for fun, friendship

and community service, Bendigo Branch are celebrating their 90th Birthday on September 7th. If you are a former member and would like to help them celebrate please ring Joyce on 54483058 or email Bev on [email protected]

CWA was at “Groovin the Moo”. From putting handles back on to bags, sitting and chatting with people wanting company, various other little helpful services and selling beannies and scarves to some of the 20,000 people attending, made the day a truly wonderful experience....one that we were thankful to be part of and to share.

Pictured is the 4 metre tall milk carton forming the top part of the water drinking fountain that we were invited to yarnbomb at 'Groovin the Moo' by local Illustrator/Graphic

Designer & Community Artist Tara Kingston from RARAgrace.

CWA attended the Mandurang Valley Family Festival. The ACWW (Associated Country Women of the World) Walk was held around the Mandurang Oval. The funds raised on the day will go towards bringing women from

the South Pacific Islands to attend the World Conference in Melbourne in 2019. Following the Walk, members manned the Merchandise Stall and finalised the knitting and crochet for the yarn bombed Milk Carton at Groovin the Moo.

Our Meetings are open for anyone to come along, have a ’cuppa and a chat’ and see what we are doing in the community. Times may change for functions. For more information see CWAbendigonortherngroup on Facebook for updates about Meetings and Functions or contact Marilyn on 0404 334 855.

Lockwood South Primary celebrated Education Week with a 'Special Persons' afternoon tea and activities: Monday 2pm to 3.30pm, a 'Step Into School' night 6pm to 7pm Tuesday, 'Open morning' Wednesday 9am to 10.30am and 'National Simultanious Storytime' at 11am and a 'Big Breakfast and Special Assembly' Friday morning.

It was a chance for families to come along to our school and see the students, staff and families learning and having fun!

Thank you to our families for being awesome and for all of those who made it to our working bee during the holidays.

We tried out our new BBQ that the 2017 grade six’s raised funds to purchase and together we completed many of the tasks.

We also held our Commemorative ANZAC service on Monday 23rd of April, families

BIG HILL PRIMARY NEWSBy Megan Haddon = School Chaplain

Student Voice at Big Hill Primary school voted to raise money to support the RSPCA, they felt that it was a good cause to raise awareness about treating animals with care and respect.

On Tuesday the 8th of May Simon from RSPCA Bendigo came to the school and told students how important it is to take your pets to the vet when they are sick and to treat them against fleas as you can catch

illnesses from fleas, and washing your hands

after touching animals.

He also talked about knowing how to read

pet behaviour, like when they are saying

hello by smelling your hand or rubbing their

tail on your leg. Simon also spoke about pet

adoption and reporting animal cruelty to the

RSPCA inspectors.

Our school raised approximately $350 for the

RSPCA and wore our onsies or PJ's for the day.

We had a parade and the class who raised

LOCKWOOD PRIMARY SCHOOLBy Sally Rule = Principal

Performing Arts Excellence

Grade 5 and 6 students at Lockwood Primary School presented “The Amazing Adventures of Superstan” on Tuesday 22nd May. Director, Erin Malone, commented on the qualities that musical productions bring out in students, “We were amazed at the way students rose to the challenge, learning their lines and getting their songs ready in a fairly short time frame. Their commitment has been amazing. I feel so proud of our senior students and the way they’ve managed to balance the demands of the production with NAPLAN testing, sporting commitments and school-based tasks.”

Kelly Effenberg, the show’s producer, was glowing about the leadership opportunities

that this experience offered and the fact that it challenged students in a new way, tapping into skills and qualities that stretched comfort zones and encouraged students to reflect.

Kane Harris had a leading role in the show. He

said that having the whole school as well as a local kinder present for the dress rehearsal, helped to prepare him for opening night.

CDs are available for purchase by contacting the General Office on 5435 3224.

AUSKICK SEASONThe extremely popular AFL Auskick has kicked off at centres across the region.

At Maiden Gully the numbers are again very strong as the boys and girls go through their paces on a Sunday morning at the local footy ground.

Auskick co-ordinators also get great assistance from parents in assisting to run the drills for the young footballers and the skill level is very encouraging.

Eventually these youngsters will make their way in to the junior competition and some will go on to play senior football.

CRUSOE COLLEGE NEWSCongratulations to our Year 8 boys volleyball team who recently won the Loddon Mallee Region Finals that were played in Mildura. Our boys travelled to Midura for the day. They left at 4am and returned home at 8pm. Our team consisted of Hughie, Bailey, Cody, Harry, Charlie and S’baw.

Work Experience – Zahra A 10H

I am interested in the health industry that is why I decided to apply for work experience at St John of God. I spent 5 days at the hospital observing and learning in different departments.

Each day I was in a new ward for example, maternity, medical, surgical, rehab and I

spent one day with a physiotherapist. At the beginning of each day I was partnered with a nurse who allowed me to do a few jobs for example making the hospital bed, bringing needed items, etc. but the main job was to watch and observe. From this experience

I have gained information about the environment that nurses work in and what they do on a day to day basis. I have learnt the ability to communicate with the patients and nurses (it really teaches you about communication!), I saw the duties of nurses and I met some great people. One of the best parts about work experience was how I was able to meet some patients and asked them about the hospital and nurses, they all told me great feedback.

My favourite wards were rehab and maternity. Rehab was one of my favourites because it was really interesting and inspiring how simple activities helped the patients improve on their condition.

I observed the activities that was run by the physiotherapists for example walking a small distance, stretching, and exercises in the pool and in the gym.

Maternity was also one of my favourites because I saw the newborn babies, how they were treated, how they got their hearing checked and even got to hold a baby! I held

the baby while she was getting her hearing checked.

Overall it was a great experience and a pathway I will consider in my future. I am looking forward to completing a different work experience later in the year and I would encourage all Year Ten students to start organising and securing their work experience before it is too late.

KANGAROO FLAT PRIMARY SCHOOL = GRIP LEADERSHIP CONFERENCEBy Ahkeela Thomas – Grade 5

This is the first time I attended the GRIP conference. I was impressed and didn’t think it could get any better. I am amazed at the content, variety, resources, the comedy and the way all of the presenters presented what the conference was all about. It was super organised and ran smoothly. A professionally run conference.

We did a lot of fun and enjoyable thing there. We did something about how leaders are transformers and how the first step to being a leader is not being given a position, but is transforming yourself or in this case myself into a leader. We also learnt to be a strawberry leader rather than a watermelon leader.

Watermelon leaders appear different on the outside to what they are on the inside. Now a strawberry leader is someone who appears the same on the outside to the inside.

Now you may ask what GRIP means. It means Generosity, Responsibility, Integrity and People. I forgot to mention that we learnt simple changes that leaders can make can positively transform our school. We also learnt 6 ways to contribute positively to changes. They are; what we want to do, how this change benefits others, ask permission from a teacher, name the people who will assist you in this change, go forward with the change and evaluate the change.

KANGAROO FLAT PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS Kangaroo Flat Primary School wishes to congratulate Grade 3/4 teacher, Ben

Fiegert on receiving the accolade of the Primary Educator of the year for Design and Technology.

The award was presented at the Design and Technology Teachers Association of Victoria (DATTA) conference held in May.

Ben enjoys the digital curriculum and teaches students to problem solve and take risks through the use of coding and programming. “Seeing how ‘makerspace’ projects can deliver cross-curricular learning and ideas for other projects really tick the boxes for the curriculum and really get kids engaged” says KFPS teacher, Ben Fiegert.

With the new STEM-heavy curriculum for teachers to wrap their heads around, Ben has supported staff from a number of smaller

rural schools by delivering professional development through online forums and workshops in an effort to make teaching with tech approachable for all.

This year’s theme for the DATTA conference was ‘Personal, Local, Global’ and this is just what Ben Fiegert tries to get his students to understand – that through creative thinking we all have the chance to develop solutions to today’s global issues.

Discovery is seeing what everybody else has seen, and thinking what nobody else has thought. - Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi

AUSTRALIAN TRAVELLER’S TOP 100 AWESOME PLACESBendigo has been listed in Australian Traveller magazine’s ‘Top 100 awesome places’ May edition.

Australian Traveller is the country’s best selling travel magazine with a readership of 80,000 people, and the Australian Traveller website receives 100,000 visitors each month.

Within the Top 100, Bendigo was listed first in the ‘Alternative capitals’ section, above Fremantle, Bundaberg, Newcastle, Townsville and Ballarat.

City of Greater Bendigo Tourism and Major Events Manager Terry Karamaloudis said it was a great achievement for Bendigo.

“Bendigo has built a strong reputation as a great regional city, a great place for a weekend away and to experience first class art, culture, heritage and food and wine. This type of recognition demonstrates our hard work over many years to build that reputation and to market ourselves to domestic and international visitors is paying off.

We work closely with our industry members to continually find new and attractive experiences that we can offer visitors, which has resulted in steady upward trends in our domestic visitor numbers over the past 10 years.

Tourism benefits our local businesses and the wider community and it’s great to see that people from across the country can

experience what we do: a great city with so much to see and do.”

• • •

VISITOR CENTRE VOLUNTEERS The Bendigo Visitor Centre has acknowledged the dedication of its outstanding volunteer team during National Volunteer Week.

• A number of volunteers received badges in recognition of significant years of service.

• 16 volunteers = 5 years of service badges

• Five volunteers = 10 years of service badges

• Six volunteers = 15 years of service badges

• Nine volunteers = receive certificates for 18 and 21 years of service

Tourism and Major Events Unit Manager Terry Karamaloudis said volunteers were critical to Greater Bendigo’s high quality visitor services.

“The service provided by the Bendigo Visitor Centre volunteers is a testament to how much volunteers enjoy their various roles and the pleasure that comes from meeting new people and encouraging positive experiences across Bendigo. The Bendigo Visitor Centre has 85 active volunteers with a combined total of 666 years of service.

The centre is open seven days per week, 364 days of the year, only closing on Christmas Day.

Volunteer support is vital to ensure we offer the best possible service to visitors and support our tourism members and local businesses.”

This June we start with our shared lunch after the service on our first Sunday.

Leny Pahina will lead our Karaoke style worship on June17. Ps Stella Johns continues her PMC training and is a blessing in our church.

All are welcome to share in the anointing of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God each Sunday at 10 am in the Y Community Hall opposite Aldi scripture study and lady groups are available during the week.

Prayer needs to Pastor Peter Pritchard on 0413 682 999.

YOUR GOOD HEALTHBY ALAN BEAUMONT HALL

GOUT Are you one of the many people suffering from Gout in the Community?

Gout affects many people in the community, so you’re not alone.

The typical patient drinks too much, is overweight, and lets their cholesterol get out of control. They could also have high blood pressure and diabetes.

You wake at midnight with severe pain in a joint or big toe. Not all patients have exactly the same symptoms. Women also get gout, particularly after menopause, and the pain can occur elsewhere.

Gout however is the most common type of arthritis and can occur elsewhere. It is more common than rheumatoid arthritis.

Common symptoms?

Pain, hot red joints, pain on pressure when touched.

Fortunately it usually passes in a few days, and the following will help:

Make sure the problem is gout so see your Doctor. A microscopic examination of joint fluid can be undertaken if necessary.

Your Doctor will decide.

Bed rest during the attack free from clothing and bed clothes on the area.

Diet? The attack will be triggered by purines found in animal protein so limit meat and meat products, and no alcohol.

Plenty of fluid to drink to flush out the uric acid in the area as water flushes this out of the body.

Over the counter medication for pain relief? Ibuprofen or diclofenac. Either are powerful analgesics and great for reducing inflammation. Do not take on an empty stomach. See you pharmacist for full instructions. You will be referred on as necessary.

Medication is available from your Doctor if required to prevent future attacks. This will avoid joint damage from future attacks.

Be patient, the problem will pass.

2/3 of patients will not have another attack for more than a year.

BY CHRIS ANNETT (Podiatrist @ n8 health Group)

FOOT AND LOWER LIMB SPORTING INJURIESAre you or someone you know experiencing pain during or after sporting activities?

We are now well into the season of winter sports and sometimes injuries can occur.

Injuries and pain that involve legs, knees, lower legs/shins, ankles or feet can be assessed and treated by a podiatrist.

Assessment of your biomechanics and foot function by your podiatrist may also assist with injury prevention as poor biomechanics or foot function is a cause of many injuries.

There are all different types of injuries that can cause your pain during a sporting game.

It can be due to an acute injury, for example an inversion ankle sprain (rolled ankle) or it might be a chronic injury, for example a tendon/muscle that may be over working due to poor biomechanics. Sometimes your foot and leg function can be altered due to a tight tendon/muscle or loss of range of motion of one or more joints.

Another contributing factor can be incorrect footwear or not having enough support within your footwear. These factors can contribute to an overuse injury developing (repetitive strain of a tendon or muscle), so it is important to make sure you do stretches correctly pre and post-game combined with an adequate warm up and warm down.

These are not the only preventative measures to avoid injury. If your feet and legs are not functioning correctly this can also increase the risk of an overuse injury.

Overuse injuries are common amongst Athletes and can be debilitating and often take time to heal for you to return back to activity pain free. These types of injuries can vary in severity with the milder form

(minor ache) to severe (increase in pain with underlying tendinitis).

Podiatrists perform a range of assessments taking note of your pain history, injury history, assessing particular muscle/tendon groups, assessing joint range of motion, assessing your gait, and assessing your foot posture combined with foot function.

Treatment of sporting injuries will often depend if the injury is acute or chronic. Treatment will focus on reducing inflammation, reducing any foot functioning abnormalities with taping or orthotics, reviewing footwear used for the activity and prescribing a stretching/exercise regime to improve function of a particular muscle.

If there are any concerns that are not in our scope of practice then we refer to the appropriate discipline for further assessment.

To have your feet and biomechanics assessed book an appointment today with n8 Health Group 505 High St. Golden Square.

KANGAROO FLAT RSL NEWSNow with Anzac Day and our Anzac Badge selling over life is slowing a little. On the 14th May, 2018 some of our members attended the Bendigo Special Development School to

present the children from Room 18, with Certificates of Appreciation for the wonderful job they did in making and selling Anzac Biscuits. They then presented the Kangaroo Flat RSL with a cheque to go towards the Anzac Appeal. We held a Thank you lunch for all the people who helped with the selling of Anzac tokens at the five venues. This was held at Medora’s Restaurant with 45 people in attendance.

We had a Bunnings BBQ on Mother’s Day, once again thank you to all who helped. We will be holding another one on Saturday June 30th. The Tuesday and Thursday Open Days are still happening with a different format. We find most of our members are wanting to come along for the friendship and social side, so we are no longer providing a meal, but everyone is more than happy to bring a small plate to share or donate a packet of biscuits to have with a cuppa.

The Social Club will meet on Monday 4th June firstly at the Hall about 10,30am and then for lunch at 12.00 noon at the Kangaroo Flat Hotel. Please contact Dot Handley for further information.

THE 2018 SENIORS FESTIVAL

The City of Greater Bendigo is calling for expressions of interest from clubs, groups and organisations interested in holding an event as part of the 2018 Bendigo Seniors Festival which takes place from Sunday October 7 to October 14.

City of Greater Bendigo Community Wellbeing Manager Chris Kelly said the Bendigo festival is part of the Victorian Senior Festival which commenced in 1982 and is one of the State’s more enduring festivals.

“The Bendigo Seniors Festival offers a range of free and low-cost events and activities for older residents and we are looking for groups who would like hold an event as party of the festival to showcase their organisation and provide entertainment for our older residents. Groups and organisations can hold open and come and try days, displays, exercise programs, in fact any activity or entertainment that senior members of the community may enjoy. All events will be listed and promoted in the annual festival program booklet.

This year the festival theme is “get social” and we would love to include as many activities as possible on the program as possible.”

FAMILY FUN DAYPlanning is underway for the annual Kangaroo Flat Family Fun Day to be held on Sunday July 15th.

The family fun day is a joint promotion between the City of Greater Bendigo, Kangaroo Flat Community House, Kangaroo Flat Community Enterprise and Kangaroo Flat Primary School.

Once again the venue will be the gymnasium at the Kangaroo Flat Primary School and amongst the activities will be Face Painting, Jumping Castle, Animal Farm, Play Zone, Sports Games and a host of other activities.

Organisers are hoping to get hundreds of locals pass through the doors and partake in the activities planned.

FORK IN THE ROAD COMMUNITY HUB TO HELP DISADVANTAGEDBendigo Community Health Services is calling for community support to create a new hub to help vulnerable and disadvantaged people build life and work skills.

Fork In The Road Bendigo will be designed with facilities and services information to show people using the space there is a road to new opportunity in their life.

Bendigo Community Health Services CEO Kim Sykes said the wonderful generosity of the Andrews Foundation had delivered use of a space beside the Central site at 165-171 Hargreaves Street for three years.

“We are determined to make the most of this fantastic opportunity from the Andrews Foundation but we will need community support to get Fork In The Road established

and supporting the vulnerable, disadvantaged, lonely and homeless as we intend. Fork In The Road needs a kitchen and coffee making area so we can provide a safe and respectful space for learning opportunities such as food handling and food preparation skills which we hope then leads to people seeing employment opportunity. The hub will also be home to our Thursday Soup Kitchen, a shower and laundry and provide us with an opportunity to run peer support groups in areas such as Alcohol and Other Drugs, our refugee families or youth. We are grateful to Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters who has secured a $15,000 Stronger Communities grant for us to get this project started and now we’re looking for generous and community-minded tradespeople, community groups and businesses out there who can help us finish the task of getting Fork In the Road fitted out and ready to go.”

Anyone wanting to support Bendigo Community Health Services in creating the Fork In The Road Bendigo community hub can email [email protected] or call 5448 1629.

VICTORIA REMEMBERS MAJOR GRANT PROGRAMMember for Bendigo West, Maree Edwards MP, has announced that Kangaroo Flat RSL Sub-branch will receive funding through the Victoria Remembers Major Grant Program for a project to develop a new memorial wall at the Soldiers Memorial site in Kangaroo Flat, to acknowledge the 65 Kangaroo Flat service personnel from WWI.

The State Government will contribute $80,000 to the memorial wall with the City of Greater Bendigo providing project management and undertake landscape enhancements on the

existing historic site to complement the new wall.

Maree Edwards says the government are proud to provide support for a range of projects that ensure that Victorians are always reminded of the service and sacrifice of our veterans.

‘’I am very excited for the Kangaroo Flat RSL and this project that the volunteers and supporters at the sub branch have worked tirelessly to plan. I congratulate the sub branch on their success and it is through community projects like this that all Victorians can learn more about our war related heritage.’’

COMMUNITY CHAMPIONSHIP RANKINGS

AFL Victoria has released the official rankings for the 2019 Worksafe AFL Victoria Community Championships.

This follows the successful titles held in May across the state.

Thirty two football leagues have been assigned new nominal rankings following their participation in the 2018 championships, which saw the best senior players from across Victoria go head to head in a one off interleague match.

Eastern Football League is now the number one ranked league in the state followed by Northern, Geelong, Ovens & Murray and Mornington.

Then follows Goulburn Valley, Western Region, Hampden, Ballarat and South East.

The release of the rankings puts established country leagues like Bendigo and Gippsland outside the top ten on the list which will be a concern to many long time country football supporters.

In other rankings announced, Heathcote comes in at number twenty one, North Central at twenty three, and Loddon Valley at number thirty.

Final entries for participation in the 2019 season are not requested by AFL Victoria until the end of the year to allow leagues sufficient time to decide whether they wish to participate in the competition the following year.

If the current rankings remain status quo then Bendigo is likely to play Gippsland, Heathcote would meet Riddell, North Central would play West Gippsland, and Horsham would play Loddon Valley.

The doors to the 4,000-seat, $23.65M Bendigo Stadium show court expansion have been officially opened to the Greater Bendigo community.

To celebrate the opening of this fantastic sports and entertainment venue, the City of Greater Bendigo and Bendigo Stadium planned an exciting opening series of events, starting with the first Braves home game on the new show court.

Mayor Cr Margaret O’Rourke said she was excited to see the expansion project finished.

“This is going to be a wonderful facility for our community. It is the largest indoor stadium constructed outside metropolitan Melbourne, which puts Greater Bendigo in an enviable position to attract major national and international sporting events and spectacular concerts and other entertainment. Importantly, the new expansion also improves the player and spectator experience for the more than 10,000 people that use this facility each week to play basketball, volleyball and netball.

Bendigo Stadium Chief Executive Officer Nathan O’Neill said he looked forward to the Stadium hosting world-class experiences for the community to enjoy.

“The new show court is unlike any other in Bendigo or across regional Victoria. We cannot wait for people to come and interact with the new space, be it for sport or watching live entertainment. Our vision is also to be a leader in improving the health of our community, so I am thrilled the expanded Stadium will be able to further cater for all levels of participation and continue to provide strong pathways to elite sport.”

The Bendigo Stadium expansion features a three court/show court expansion, spectator seating for up to 4,000 people, kiosk/bar, crèche, change rooms, updated administration area, meeting rooms, retail area, storage, and 12 new outdoor netball courts.

Wi-Fi will be available throughout the building via the Purple Wi-Fi platform, which is available in 125 countries.

ESSENDON SUPPORTERS GROUP NEWS

Once again, the Essendon Supporters Group’s very popular ‘Watch Footy on the Big Screen’ day will be held on Sunday 10th June (the Queen’s Birthday long weekend) at the Hibernian Hotel, High Street, Golden Square.

The match featured on the day will be Essendon’s round 12 game against the Brisbane Lions in Brisbane which is scheduled to commence at 1.10pm.

So, there’s every opportunity to come to The Hibernian for lunch with fellow Bomber supporters

and then settle in to watch the game which, hopefully, will produce a win.

The Watch Footy function is always very popular and usually attracts a very passionate audience with one thing in mind—to cheer Essendon on.

Apart from the match itself, there’s warm winter yummies provided at half-time and some very nice lucky door prizes for those fortunate enough to win them.

Hopefully the game will be a good one for us. Whatever happens, the Essendon Supporters Group Committee hopes that everyone including members, their family and friends and even opposition supporters who would like to watch the big screen will come along and make it another great afternoon.

Please contact Joan Hartley on 5461 2283 or Bob Williams on 0417 291 911 if you are able to attend.

IN THE MONEY22 year old golfer Lucas Herbert from Ravenswood was in the money at the recent Rocco Forte Open in Sicily.

Lucas finished in a tie for third in the $1million tournament

which is part of the European Golf Tour.

He fired an amazing 8 under in his final round

to rocket up the leader board and claim another handy pay day on the professional golfing circuit.

His performance got him an invitation to head to Belgium in May for the Belgian Knock Out at the Rinkven International Golf Club at Antwerp.

It has been an amazing last twelve months for the talented golfer who grew up playing in junior tournaments across Victoria before embarking on a professional career.

So far this year he has played in tournaments in New Zealand, Canada, China, Belgium and Italy.

BEZZO’S SPORTS GOSSConcerning times for Bendigo Football League administrators who have to come up with a solution to the shortage of footballers at Under 18 level this season.

Country clubs Maryborough and Castlemaine have dropped out of the Under 18 competition because of a lack of numbers and it is a real headache for administrators.

Then there is a major problem with the number of clubs relying on players from the Castlemaine and Maryborough area to fill their teams each week.

Small country clubs with dwindling populations are offering good money for players to travel and this is having a major impact in the region.

Amalgamations will be a talking point at the end of the season.
