What is Flat Classroom?

• What is it: it: The Flat Classroom Project is a global collaborative project that joins together middle and senior high school students.

• Who started it: It is Co-founded by Vicki Davis and Julie Lindsay in 2006.

• Main Goal: The main goals of the project is to 'flatten' or lower the classroom walls so that instead of each class working isolated and alone, 2 or more classes are joined virtually to become one large classroom.

What Are the Programs Used?

This is done through the Internet using Web 2.0 tools such as Wikispaces and Ning. The Project uses Web 2.0 tools to make communication and interaction between students and teachers from all

participating classrooms easier.

When Does This Happen?

This project traditionally runs in October-December each year.

Inspiration

This project was inspired by the book “The World is Flat” (Chapter 13 pages 501-503) by Thomas Friedman which disscusses a brief history of the twenty first century. An essential theme of this book revolves around the idea of globalization, and its impact on our world today.

A Student’s Job

• A student will be assigned a group with about four students from other schools around the world. We will have to create a wiki resource that introduces Thomas Friedman’s world fatteners to a wider audience.

• We will also have to create a short video that focuses on one specific area from your investigation in more detail.
