Imre Varga and H.E. Igor Furdik, and Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Serbia, H.E. Vincent Degert, visited Kikinda last week. The EU delegation was officialy received by the Mayor of Kikinda, Mr. Ilija Vojinovic and the municipal executives. Their Excellencies, the Ambassadors Imre Varga, Igor Furdik and Vincent Degert expressed their delight to be in Kikinda and confirmed their sincere and unreserved support to Serbia in its progress towards European integration, i.e. its accession to the European Union. Representatives of local self government presented the municipality to the guests and expressed their hope that the senior diplomats will do their best to help Serbia and Kikinda on their European road, for which they received a sincere approval. At the press conference in the National Museum, the Ambassador Varga said that the European Union wants to present the possibilities it offers to the citizens of the EU candidate countries. ”We consider Serbia to be a very serious EU accession candidate and we support its aspirations on its Europen road, not only politically, but practically, by funding the projects and sharing knowledge and experience. Fast EU accession of Serbia is the national interest of Hungary. We support the abolition of visas and thawing of the Trade Agreement,” said Varga. The Ambassador Furdik said: “I am glad to see you are determined and we shall do all we can to help you. We will be at your disposal regarding our experience as EU members. In your country we have implemented approximately 100 projects, whose value is around 10 million euro, of which three are in Kikinda”. The Ambassador Degert expressed his satisfaction to be, as he pointed out, in one “very European region”. “Your region is European, not only according to its history and its multiethnicity, but also because it is located on the border with the two countries that are members of the European Union. So far around 1 million euro has been invested in seven projects in Kikinda and the surrounding area. This is just the beginning and I hope that in the future there will be more of them. Step by step we are reaching our joint objective. We must not forget that it is the citizens who are in the heart of these democratic processes”, pointed out Degert. The Ambassadors visited the Technical school and the Vocational High school „Milos Crnjanski“, where they spoke with the students about the road Serbia must take to the European Union. E. Imre Varga i Nj.
