The Florida Keys and Key West experience a quiet time during the month of September. This is
the least popular calendar month for travel as an American, especially to a place prone to tropical storms. The “In the Cone” media drama that has played out over the years has negative-ly influenced September travel to the southern tropics of the USA for many. The standard American public school calendar also keeps families at home, adjusting to their new schedules.
One of the most immediate in-dications that September has arrived is the water clarity especially in Key West at the Historic Seaport. Walking the docks is a new experience because of the clearly exposed bottom. Gone are the cruise ships and their massive
propellers and thrusters that cloud the water up to six times a day during sea-son. Gone are the never ending jet ski tours, rental boat operators and visit-ing private boat owners. Many of the charter boats are hauled out and in the boat yard this month as well.
What a wonderful opportunity to see the Florida Keys in a way that many have not, like it used to be years ago. A quiet little chain of islands, un-discovered.
In this issue, many of our writers touch on the meaning of “slow sea-son” and what they do to re-connect with their chosen lifestyles. We’ve witnessed each of them working long hours, sometimes for weeks on end, to provide once in a lifetime experiences for their guests.
We know that our writers need a break. How do they unwind from such an unorthodox occupation? Where do they go for vacation if they already live in paradise? What’s it like during the “Forgotten Season” in the Florida Keys? Read through the September is-sue of FishMonster Magazine for the answers. Some may surprise you. Each of our writers has contact information included on their page and most will be available to talk so feel free to reach out.
Thanks again for your sup-port of FishMonster Magazine! ~Capt. Marlin
