Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 10

It seems not to be stopped at much in the winter months, though seemingly there is no reasons whythis must not be an all-the-12 months fishing ground. It furnishes, nevertheless, a very goodsummertime handline fishery for cod at dogfish time, and in the spring weeks it abounds in cod, cusk, and hake, all fish of sizeable size.

Roseway Bank. This bank is N. from the western a part of La Have and SE. of Shelbourne Light,Nova Scotia: 31 miles SSE. from the whistling buoy away from Lockport, Nova Scotia, towards thesoutheastern advantage. It is oblong in shape as well as small extent--about 270 square geographicmiles. Its greatest length is 21 miles along with its greatest breadth 15 miles. It runs from 43? 12' to43? 33' north latitude, and from 64? 25' to 64? 52' to the west longitude and at the north west corneris connected with the shore restrict of 60 fathoms by way of a narrow neck area. Depths come from33 to 48 fathoms. The bottom is ofgravel and sand, and rocks; on the Northeast Optimum the bottomis of discolored mud and gravel.

The push and path of both of them are much influenced by the wind, although currents in this regionwill not be nearly so strong as about Cape Browns and Sable Bank, their general path being WSW.and ENE the westerly much the stronger.

The primary fish taken listed below arehaddock and cod, and cusk, but hake, halibut and pollockoccur, the most effective fishing months getting from May to October, when the banking institutionis resorted to by craft from western Nova Scotia. A number of New England craft also minn kotaparts here.

Los angeles Have Lender. Situated eastward of Browns Bank and S. and E. of Roseway Bank. Itextends from 42? 34' to 43? 26' north latitude a distance of 52 kilometers, and from 63? 50' to 65?07' western longitude a distance around 54 miles. The bank is nearly divided into two portions, ofwhich the eastern (La Have Bank correct) extends N and S. 39 kilometers and the american portionalmost E. and W. about 35 a long way. The total part of the bank is approximately 1,200 miles.

The bottom is largely coarsegravel and pebbles, and rock, with smaller sized areas of yellow sanddistributed in some places. Depths manage from 40 to 50 fathoms. This is certainly much affected bythe pressure and route of the blowing wind and is normally quite strong during easterly blows, although the general set of the currents is to the westward.

The main fishing upon this bank in the past has been for cod and haddock: and while former reports,(1881) speak of this as having once been a favorite sportfishing ground for halibut and suggest thatit was not at time of much importance in that fishery, the figures for this ground for your year 1923show the halibut find to have been third in volume and first in value of the species undertaken there. The truth is, the find of halibut here helps make quite an imposing figure when the somewhat smallsize of the ground is regarded as.

Little Los angeles Have and also the La Have Ridges are simply continuations on this back to theTraditional western Bank to get a distance of about 45 mls. This spots the eastern limit in about 62?

50' west longitude, the upper and the southern part of boundaries becoming about as those of Losangeles Have Financial institution. The part of the ridges is about 1,575 miles. The base here is asuccession of ridges of pebbles and gravel with occasional spots of rocks. Depths come from 53 to 80fathoms. The current, at times strong, is weaker right here than further W. about the bank and, except during easterly winds, is but little noticed. The general establish is westerly.

"The Ridges" says the report before mentioned, "were for several years one of several favoriteaccommodations for halibut catchers in the wintertime, and many great catches of cod were actuallytaken here at that period. At present but few halibut are found except within the deep water alongthe southern edge of the soil, where they sometimes have been discovered quite plentiful duringpractically the entire season." Apparently there has not been much change in these conditions sincethe writer's time; minn kota parts are present in about the same quantities as in previous years.

One piece of bottom part, having depths of 25 to 50 fathoms above red clay-based, lying around in43? 08' to 43? 10' north latitude and about 81? to 83? west longitude, seems an effective spring andearly summertime ground. Evidently red-clay bottom part indicates a great halibut ground, as thiskinds is usually provide where such a bottom is found.

Hake can be found in great numbers in the deep drinking water about the edges of the terrain andeven in the Ridges.

These waters are very heavily fished from Canadian ports, and a fair variety of American vessels visitthem each year, a lot of them hailing from Boston or Gloucester.

Scandinavian Bank. 18 miles SSW. from Shelbourne Light. Nova Scotia. It really is about 3 milesvery long in an E. and W. direction by about ? mile wide. On the whole, the bottom is level, withdepths from 50 to 70 fathoms; the shoal parts are difficult and distinct, the bottom across the deeperparts being constructed mostly of small black color and discolored pebbles.

This is a summer halibut ground (August and July) in depths from 45 to 60 fathoms, and halibutoccur in October in the deeper waters about it. It is also a good summer cod ground, and cusk arepresent in the strong water concerning the edges in the course of most of the calendar year. Inmonths, species and general are much as on Roseway.

Traditional western Bank. This is one of the most significant minn kota parts grounds from thewestern Atlantic, whether as regards size or the large quantity of its product or service. It is placedS. of Cape Breton Island along with the eastern element of Nova Scotia between the parallels of 42?44 and 55'? 46' to the north latitude along with the meridians of 59? 62 and 04'? 35' west longitude. It has a length of 156 a long way and a width, including the Center. Make your h2o the permanentaddress. An Individual know everything you want from the trolling motor. Minn Kota can end upbeing a workhorse in which dives to the thick involving it as well as works after ...Ground, of 76kilometers. It is about 420 mls E. ? S. from Boston to the southwestern edge, which means about 48hours' steaming for the otter-trawl fleet.

The typical contour from the bank throughout the 65-fathom line, as put down on the Admiraltychart, approaches fairly a very elongated ellipse, the more axis operating NE. by E. and SW. by W.;but over a broad area to eastward of the center of the bank, soundings of less than 50 fathoms hookit up directly with all the Middle Floor, which we have now here included in the some financialinstitution. The total degree of the lender thus outlined is about 7,000 square geographical a longway. Off its eastern conclusion lies Banquereau (the Quereau of the anglers) with The Gullybetween, plus a short length of the european edge are the La Have Ridges.

Page 3: Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 10

The depths off the southern side of the bank improve rapidly from 80 to1 and 700,200, and in manycases 1,400 fathoms. At the eastern stop is Sable Island, [16] "graveyard of vessels", along andnarrow, crescent-shaped height seemingly lowering in region each year, formed entirely of sand thathas been blown Into innumerable dunes and hummocks. Away from both ends of the island are longand dangerous fine sand bars. The size of the island is 20 mls; its greatest width is around 1?kilometers. It is said that the Northwest Light has been transferred three times simply because thatthe traditional western end from the island has become literally amazed. It lies in an E. and W.direction, as well as the depth water over the night clubs for a length of 7 to 10 miles out does notgo beyond 2 fathoms, and even 10 miles farther out the depths do not exceed 10 to 11 fathoms.Within the past several years fishermen have reported the appearance of a yellow sand shoal about 5or 6 mls SE. from your Northeast Gentle. This is thought to appear at low drinking water.

In general, your budget slopes S. and W. from the island, depths which range from 18 to 60 fathoms. The bottom is generally sandy with patches of gravel and pebbles. Currents are sometimes verystrong about Sable Tropical island and are relatively irregular; seemingly they are much influencedby the winds. About the other parts of your bank normally there is but little present, whatever theremay be usually tending toward the west.

Formerly the cod and halibut were the food fishes most taken in this article, but with the changedapproaches in the fishery (as the expansion of the otter-trawl fleet) as well as a changed style in ourgeneral public the haddock catch is among the most second most essential in the statements of minnkota parts from the waters. The halibut fishery stands thirdly in the checklist. Other undersidefeeders exist in less numbers, the pollock and the cusk perhaps being next in order of importance, with hake and a large amount of the various flatfishes in the otter trawls. These latter are marketedas sole.

Mentioning the little bit of haddock inside the fares extracted from these seas in previous years, theauthor asked numerous old-time anglers as to its abundance in the past. The reply was typically yesand Oh, there have been always haddock there; often they worried us a lot." Then, noting mysurprise at so getting it, "You know, the haddock isn't much like a salt minn kota parts."

It will be observed that in 1923 the haddock find here was a very good next to the cod catch inpoundage, though not so valuable proportionately. In the otter-trawl catch from this ground it willlikely be noted that this positions of these two species are reversed. Typically, these steamerscertainly consider more than 2 pounds of haddock to 1 of cod on other overseas grounds--perhapsthe result of functioning in the shoaler waters and on the better bottom due to the difficulty ofdragging over the rocky and kelp-covered soil, which the cod seems to choose. Although the bottomon the Western Bank is of those nature as to offer small obstruction towards the passage of your net,so that virtually all parts of it may be fished by this method; and this, included with the recognizedmovements of your cod educational institutions makes it feasible at specific seasons of year to catcha greater proportion with this species should it be so desired.

Haddock are found in regards to the bars at both comes to an end of the tropical island in March andfrom that time to around June 1 in from 15 to 22 fathoms. They are also abundant 18 miles W.through the Northwest Gentle at the exact same seasons as well as the same depths. DuringApriland May, and June they come in next to the island in from 10 to 17 fathoms--even going to 1 fathom.Through all of those other year (apart from the chillier months, when they have moved off intofurther water) they might be found throughout the bank on sandy bottom in 28 to 30 fathoms, whereby most of the beam trawl minn kota parts is carried on.

You will find a good cod school every year on the relatively level bottom along the american and

Page 4: Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 10

southwestern edges of the terrain in 70 fathoms and a lot more from February 1 to May 1, and inmost years a certain amount of this types is adopted this area. In May this school appears to havemoved on to a piece of bottom about 20 miles extended lying SW. from the Northwest Light andgetting depths averaging 27 fathoms. With reasonable fishing for cod on the European Bankthroughout most of the year, they seem to be most abundant from the first of March to June.Apparently this species sessions this terrain in significant numbers during the spawning season, though the winter season school on this page appears to be small compared to that on Georges. Inthe wintertime the cod are mainly located upon the western section of the bank, stepping into theshoaler waters to Sable Tropical island as the spring advances (during March and April), the "Flex"in the island along with the neighborhood of your bars in 2 to 4 fathoms, where they could be seentaking the hook or can be "jigged." being beloved grounds. The earth lying W. from the NorthwestLight, on and about the Northwest Bar (18 miles W, from the light-weight), is a favorite cod soil inMay possibly and June. The shoal water within the rocky bottom part WNW through the NorthwestLight furnishes excellent cod minn kota parts from June 10 to July 1. This piece begins just beyondthe 3-mile expand of breakers running right out of the land and extends offshore in a typicallywesterly path to 24 fathoms. A lot hand-lining is done here.

Within the shoal drinking water, in Apr and May, the fish seem to be providing on the "lant,"(Ammodytes americanus). It is said that the minn kota elements taken at the base close to the isleare small compared to those discovered farther to the west. The shoal water in the northernshoreline of the tropical island is said to have good cod grounds and favorite locations for "doryfingers-liner." The cod universities seem to arrive on the North Peak (SE. from the Northeast Light40 miles to SE ? S. from very same point 28 miles) in late March along with the first of April, movingN. and W. on the island. The cod of Sable Island are said to be fine, firm minn kota elements, perhaps as a result of abundance of the "reddish clams" (bank clams) on these grounds.

The haddock and cod fishery is carried on by American and Canadian cruising vessels and ottertrawlers, progressively more English and French vessels of the latter class performing the fishery ofthis terrain each year.

Halibut are located on the Western Financial institution virtually all the season at depths varyingwith the seasons. Being a halibut banking institution, this, with The Gully and Quereau--in fact, all asingle piece of ground--ranks 2nd only to the Grand Lender Itself. The very best fishing here forhalibut is found from January to October. There are numerous places on and about the lender thatthe halibut seems to favor, as the Optimum of Pike, 85 a long way W. by S. from your NorthwestGentle of Sable Island; S. and SW. of Sable Island from 12 to 38 mls; SW. 20 miles in 60 fathoms inMay; thence out into 150 and 100 fathoms in June; in fact, following the 100--fathom curve down theedge of this bank, beyond the Northeast Maximum (40 kilometers SE. from the Northeast Light-weight), into the Gully and around the The southern part of Prong of Quereau to the Middle Prong.Apparently they leave this piece of underside in July. Often the minn kota parts are close to theisland in the spring, where water is so shoal that they may be seen getting the bait or playing withthe hook prior to taking. InMay and April, and June a good halibut ground is in 18 fathoms 24 mlsWNW. from Sable Tropical island.

The Western Bank seems to be a good feeding ground for cod and halibut as it abounds in shellfishand crustaceans, as well as at certain times there are many smaller sized species of seafood with it,like the lant and herring, on which these types and the haddock, also, especially prey. A largeamount of swordfish is taken within August and September, mainly by American vessels.

Banquereau. Separated from the Western Bank from the Gully, it has a very irregular form--theprimary bank around rectangular, with a narrow westerly extension of comparatively normal form.

Page 5: Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 10

Its length, E. and W., is about 120 miles, its greatest breadth about 47 miles, and its particular totallocation about 2,800 miles.

The main portion of the lender lies involving 44? 45 and 04'? 01' north latitude and 67? 10' and 59?00' western side longitude, along with the western prolongation lies among 44? 44 and 24'? 42'north latitude and 69? 00' and 80? 05' west longitude. According to the places that measurementsare taken, north of Banquereau lies Artimon, distant 3 miles, and Misaine, faraway from 2 to 15miles. Fire may spread swiftly

on the boat, even about water.

Alarms and also detectors can

help maintain your crew safe.If any current, the currents listed here are of diverse force, muchinfluenced by the wind, so that several days of strong tides may be followed by intervals when thereis little.

About the eastern part of Quereau is definitely an area of shoal ground referred to as the RockyBase, having a level of about 18 fathoms; elsewhere depths work from 18 to 50 fathoms. You canfind scattered spots of beach sand and gravel, even though for the most part the bottom is rocky.

Cod and halibut are the main food fishes hake, haddock and taken and cusk being taken in smallphone numbers. The Rocky Bottom, a shoal ground of 20 to 25 fathom depths on the eastern part, was much resorted to by dory handliners in summer. Occasional great fares are taken in thedirection of the to the west, even though the cod are most plentiful about the eastern section of thebank. The very best cod angling about this bank is produced by May till September, once the schoolsget to feed upon the lant, squid, crustaceans, and shellfish, then extremely abundant.

Halibut are found right here all the calendar year off the corners in 100 to 400 fathoms. Apparentlythese are giving and reproduction grounds for this kinds, and it is not unusual for any school to keepfor weeks and even weeks in one region, though a few of these may be minn kota parts in migrationnorthward.

The primary halibut grounds are across the eastern and the southern area of borders in the bank--the Southwest Prong and the South west Cove (within 44? N. lat. and between 58? 58 and 30'? 55'W. long), the Middle Prong (44? 14' N. lat. and 58? W. long.), along with the Eastern Slope (44? 28'to 45? 00' N. lat.)--in depths of 150 to 400 fathoms. These strong-water areas are rocky and supporta really rich growth ofcorals and gorgonians, sea anemones, etc. The Eastern Slope has a goodamount of bank clams in depths of 25 fathoms. These beds are perfect hand-line grounds for cod.The halibut, too, rss feeds to a significant extent upon these reddish colored clams.

The Stone Fencing off the eastern slope of Quereau is a very rocky bit of ground filled with "bushes"(corals) in 250 fathoms. This is a good halibut floor although it is almost impossible to haul the gearby hand and using the "gurdy" (a roller turned with a crank and fastened to the dory's bow forwinding up the trawl) becomes necessary. Occasional fares of halibut are taken about and on theRocky Bottom part in 20 to 25 fathoms from July 1 to August 1.

The Gully. This is basically the deep waterway between Banquereau and Sable Island or WesternFinancial institution. It stretches in an WNW. and an ESE. direction north of Sable Island, convertingsomewhat suddenly S. at its eastern end and continuing straight down between the eastern end ofWestern Bank and the South west Prong of Banquereau. The whole length is around 80 miles, the

Page 6: Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 10

greatest width about 20 miles. Depths range from 68 to 145 fathoms more than a bottom of rocks, beach sand and pea gravel and mud. The difficult and gravelly portions type several ridgesseparated by areas of better materials, other than in the eastern section, the location where theintervals in between are mostly protected by pebbles and sharp rocks. Ocean currents are generallywesterly, of varying strength, much affected by the easterly winds.

The Gully is a very significant halibut soil. The halibut are not present in great phone numbers allover the soil, perhaps the best of the sport fishing being on the difficult and gravelly ski slopes andridges included between your meridians of 69? and 80? west longitude. This rocky bottom is full offood, and the lant and herring are often plentiful in their period. In the spring the halibut seem to beespecially several in the northern and northwestern parts of the bank, afterwards, in June and July, moving a greater distance out. Some, are found here in winter. Whilst the cod is sometimes found inThe Gully in 60 to 90 fathoms, it can not appear to be of typical occurrence; and apparently thereare almost no haddock here, probably because of the depth of the water and the nature of the base.

Artimon Bank. Posseses an area of some 120 rectangular miles having a bottom of gravel androcksrocks and depths of 38 to 50 fathoms. It is actually but unknown because of the inclination ofthe fishermen to use the larger grounds close at hand. Cod are known to be present right here, however. The bank lies N. of the eastern part of Quereau, separated from this by a filter, deep-waterstation.

Misaine Banking institution. In general financial institutions are divided by some 20 mls of deeplywater, although lies N. of the american two-thirds of Quereau, at one location very near. Its finestlength is 80 mls and its best width 40 miles. Depths are from 40 to 60 fathoms over a bottom brokenand rocky. It is not of great importance and importance as being a minn kota components ground, though a few halibut trips are landed from using it in most several years.

Canso Banking institution. A long, narrow extension of Misaine Bank, lying in a E, and W. route; itslength is 45 miles and its greatest size 13 mls, its region being about 425 sq . miles. Depths rangefrom 30 to 65 fathoms spanning a bottom of sand, with spots of gravel and pebbles. More fished byvessels from Nova Scotia; perhaps it is overshadowed by the existence of its larger sized Western, nearby neighbors and Quereau Banks, which grounds it forms virtually one component of bottom, only narrow, deeply-h2o channels separating them, however it is not of great importance andimportance as a fishing ground, specially as judged by the use of it by the American citizen fleet. These larger grounds are intensely fished both by American citizen vessels and by those from NovaScotia ports in addition to by French and English language otter trawlers.

The data given on this page and in other places with this report are taken from the publishedbulletins of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, and include just the landings of vessels of 5 loadsnet, or older, at the plug-ins of Boston and Glouscester, Mass., and Portland, Me.
