BIG BAND & BALLROOM DANCE

Fish That Fly? But, Of Course!

We’ve all read about boxing kangaroos. We’ve seen footage of dancing bears, water-

skiing squirrels, talking birds and cymbal-bashing monkeys. But “flying fish?” Come on!

Well Mother Nature, it seems, has indeed concocted such an enigma and, perhaps,

if you’re fortunate enough on this voyage, you may have a chance to catch a glimpse

of one of these curious creatures hovering just above

Crystal Serenity’s foamy wake.

How Fish Fly

Our Mother Nature noted that most small fish were in desperate need of some sort

of clever defense against larger fish who swim the seas, unafraid and in search of a

good meal. These bullies were, ahem, higher on the food chain. So, some tinier fish

devised their escape routes by becoming airborne.

Flying fish are designed with mighty tails with sculpted, oversized lower lobes.

When in danger, they vibrate this tail more than 50 beats per second and this vibra-

tion propels them along, then out of the water. (Think of them as the hummingbirds

...continued from front cover

of the sea!)

The moment they break the surface of

the water, flying fish instinctively spread

their oversized pectoral fins (which have

been sleekly tucked against their sides

while underwater) that then function as “wings.” Of the approximately 48 species of flying fish known to man, several sport enlarged pelvic fins as well.

Once airborne, this 18-inch-long mar-vel can propel his pound-and-a-half body for, on the average, two or three seconds (often longer). But the hotly-pursued ones have been known to stay “airborne” for as long as 45 seconds zooming over a distance of 2,000 feet! They do so by skimming along like a pebble tossed into the sea — each time they lose altitude, they propel themselves again and again with their powerful tail as it dips down to

the top of the water.

So, Who’s Chasing Them?Well, just about everyone. To the common predator, flying fish

must be quite a delicacy, for not only are they hunted from beneath the surface of the seas, but unfortunately from the air as well. Here’s why.

Flying fish generally live slightly beneath the waves, spending their days casually sampling a tasty array of small planktonic animals including the ever-popular copepods and the prized crab and fish larvae. For near the surface of the water lives this “grand buffet of zoo-plankton,” therefore, this too is where the hungry flying fish lurk.

And while merrily washing these de-lectable edibles through their trusty gill rakers, flying fish are themselves prey to larger planktonarians, as mentioned above, such as whale sharks. Then there’s the odd dolphin, bonito, tuna or fisher-

man (who uses flying fish as bait… or an appetizer) who senses that it’s dinner-time as well. For them, flying fish are always on the grocery list.

And even if the cunning flying fish, once under attack, has cleverly eluded his aquatic enemies by taking flight, oc-casionally he is tragically plucked from the skies by an eagle-eyed albatross or unfriendly frigate bird.

Such is the rough-and-tumble life of a

flying fish!

They’re EverywhereWhen sailing around the world, one

does have an excellent chance of spot-ting this peculiar aeronautic aquatic acrobat. Flying fish call the tropical zones of every major ocean “home” and migrate to the warmer waters, as do we, when the seasons dictate.

Thankfully, they are successful breed-ers (not to mention escape artists) and they are not currently in danger as a species. They dutifully spend the springtime and early summer mating. The oceanic side of the family allows

their soon-to-be-offspring to float freely, while their sea cousins usually attach their eggs to floating plantlife.

And don’t be too surprised if a way-ward flying fish ends up on the deck of the ship. There have been reports that these amazing little creatures have actu-ally been found on ships’ decks as high as 30 feet above the surface of the sea. The theory is that, once airborne, they were swept higher by a strong headwind and plunked down on the teak decks.

So always keep your eyes open while sailing the world. You might be sur-

prised by this astounding fish of flight.
