Three Years Old & on a Mission Elaine Cutshaw

Like some of you, I have gone to some exotic places to serve on mission, but I have found one of my most rewarding mission opportunities right here in our own Children’s Department.

For several years, I have taught three-year-old Mission Friends on Wednesday nights. I know you’re thinking, “They’re only three years old. How much can a three-year-old learn and retain about being a missionary?” The answer might surprise you.

Each month we study the ministries of a different missionary. During the month of March, we studied about North American missionaries Kurt and Rhoda Simon. They serve in Springfield, Missouri. He is a Church Planting Specialist. One of the most exciting church plants Mr. Simon has done is Canvas where he serves as pastor. Canvas reaches out to creative people by providing space for artists, musicians, actors, performers and writers. Mr. Simon asked artists to draw or paint a picture to sell to help the homeless. His suggestion inspired three-year-old mission friends to do the same. Thanks to the generosity of the Wednesday night prayer meet-ing crowd and the Sunday night worship crowd, the three-year-olds earned over $180.00 for their art; each gave his or her share to the Annie Armstrong Offering on Easter morning. These children have learned to give generously to help others who share the gospel.

Each year, teachers are short in supply for Mission Friends. Unlike going to an exotic place for a week, it does require a 37-day commitment. Yet there is no better way to invest your time than in teaching little children who will someday be this church’s legacy for the Lord on the mission field at home and around the world.

Some of the greatest memories of my life involve summer vacations. As a boy, I remember family vacations at the beach, the Rocky Mountains, and Gatlinburg. As parents, Tresa and I have enjoyed planning family vacations. My favorite was a trip to California, and I cherish the photos of our family in King’s Canyon taken on that trip.

This summer, the families of First Baptist Church will scatter all over the Southeast, the United States, and the world on vacation trips. Our members will travel to the beaches of Florida and the Carolinas. They will visit theme parks like Disney World and natural wonders like the Grand Canyon. Some will go on cruises or take trips to faraway places. Others will keep it simple by taking day trips and camping out in our own Smoky Mountains. I hope you can take some time off this summer and enjoy a vacation, a period of rest and freedom from work or study.

But I want to remind you that when we scatter to all those vacation destinations, we don’t take a vacation from following Jesus, and we can’t put our responsibility as His witnesses on hold. We don’t cease to be church members when we are away.

Page 2 | First Baptist Church of Sevierville

From the Pastor’s Heart...So I want to challenge you to enjoy your time off, but consider this:

What if you left a trail of gospel seeds wherever you went? What if you gave a morning or afternoon or a couple of hours of your vacation to work with some local Christian ministry wherever you are? What could happen if we all did Evangelism (sharing the good news of Jesus) on our vacations? I guess you would call that an EVANGECATION! Often our witness is the one thing we forget to take on vacation. This summer, make it an EVANGECATION.

When you are not on vacation this summer, don’t forget Sunday School. I’ll be talking about a Summer Sunday School challenge from the pulpit this month, and I hope you will accept it.

I love being your pastor,

Dan Spencer

National Day of Prayer Denita Galloway Intercessory Prayer Ministry Asst.

May 3, 2012 is the 61st observance of the National Day of Prayer established in 1954 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The theme for 2012 is ONE NATION UNDER GOD and is based on Psalm 33:12. In light of the unprecedented challenges the United States faces please join this commitment to raise your voice in repentance, praise and intercession for our nation, not just on this acclaimed day, but daily! How reassuring to know of our Heavenly Father’s protection and guidance, and how vital prayer is for the healing of our land and its citizens.

Prayer brings us into the presence of Almighty God. Scripture tells us in Psalm 33:12, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” and He is faithful to bless those who turn to Him. The importance of putting on each piece of our spiritual armor through prayer cannot be overemphasized. Prayer is the energy that enables the warrior to wear the armor and wield the sword. No matter

our community, country and around the world. To find out more about this wonderful ministry, you can attend our upcoming open house on May 6 from 2-6pm.

C.A.R.E. Ministry This ministry is another wonderful way for you to pray for our church family, our community and the world. Each week you will find opportunities to pray over requests that were turned in during the service, Sunday School, and to pray over our hospital and homebound lists. If you can invest one night a month, this might be the ministry for you. CARE meets on Tuesday evenings in the Fellowship Hall with a meal at 5:45 and then work from 6:00-7:30.

Other Opportunities *Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting, from

how talented we might be, if we try to fight the spiritual battle Paul described in Ephesians 6 in the energy of the flesh, we can never be victorious. That’s why the apostle ended his discussion of spiritual armor by saying, “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints” (Ephesians 6:18)

The prayers of godly people in the United States are the strong thread that binds us together. Because we have been “One Nation Under God” for more than two centuries we can unite in the following prayer:

Lord, America needs Your guidance and direction. We humbly ask that Your spirit intercede with the leaders of our nation, giving them the wisdom to make decisions that will honor You. We pray fervently for peace, both here and abroad. Let us live a life of reverence for You with peace in our hearts for our fellow man. May we always remember You are the Almighty King of Kings and Lord of Lords. May we be steadfast in our humble

obedience to You and boldly declare that we are one people united through Your powerful name, indeed, one nation under God, In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

6:00-6:30 in the Chapel. Led by Pastor Dan. *Men’s Ministry Prayer Breakfast, every Friday morning at 7:00 am at Shoney’s in *Sevierville. All ages welcome. National Day of Prayer, 1st Thursday of May every year. Worship Center is open from 6:00 am until 6:00 pm on this day, everyone welcome.

For more information please contact Denita Galloway, our prayer ministry assistant at 429-7729 or [email protected] or Lisa Pickens at the church office, 453-9001.

Prayer Changes...Jerry Hyder Associate Pastor of Adults

You and I are so blessed to be a part of a church family that makes prayer a high priority. Dr. Alan Redpath, noted Christian leader, has said: “You should never take on more work than you can cover in believing prayer.”

Prayer affects every other ministry of our church. It is essential for us to be diligent and faithful in praying for our church family and ministry opportunities in our community and around the world. Here are several ways you can get connected and be a part of our prayer ministry:

The Prayer Room Located near the Crossing, it provides an organized way to pray for our church families, our staff and for people throughout
