ConnectMatt Galyon Youth Ministry Intern

Every year around the same time in July the youth ministry packs up and heads to Panama City Beach, Florida to spend a week away from the world and focused in on Jesus. Every year there’s a theme to the trip. This year’s theme was Connect.

The main focus of the trip is always for the students to come to know Jesus as Savior. This year though, another main theme was for students to start connecting with each other and to break down the walls of cliques and exclusive social groups that seem to be so prevalent in youth groups.

Each day we focused on making connections: first with Christ, then each other, then the community and finally His church. We structured the trip this way because we believe that the only way to become a genuinely strong ministry group and to make legitimate connections with the community and the church is by first

Helping Hands Ministry

Every Wednesday afternoon, members of First Baptist Church’s Helping Hands Ministry gather to hand out food to those in the community who are in need.

According to Tim Scholz, Food Ministry Director, Matthew 25:33-40 is the ministry’s mission statement. Helping Hands is here to try to fulfill that and to meet their physical needs.

Starting at 1:00 p.m. people from throughout the community who are in need of groceries arrive at the church. Each month the church hands out $80 to $100 of groceries per family. The groceries include canned vegetables, soups, meats, crackers, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, fresh vegetables, cereal, eggs, juice and noodles. On average, 70 to 75 families visit the ministry each week. In the last six months, 5,595 people have received assistance.

Each week encouragers from the church meet with the people individually, listen to their current circumstances and pray with them. Scholz believes that the ministry offers just as much emotional support as physical. Often times the people will share what their beliefs are; however, it is not a prerequisite to receive help. The ministry is not here to force Christianity on anyone, but if they need or want spiritual help or advice we are here for that.

There are a few people who benefited from the Helping Hands Ministry in years past who are now in a place where they no longer need help. Some of them are now a part of the many volunteers that help run the ministry. One volunteer said, “It was time to give back.”

Scholz says that without the weekly volunteers and the financial support of the church and community members, the food ministry wouldn’t be possible.

If you would be interested in helping in the ministry or donating to it, please contact the church at 453-9001.

“Grow not weary in well doing” is an exhortation which, if followed, will result in blessings.

Here is a question for you to get alone and determine your answer: “For what do you want to be remembered?” Once you have your answer, dedicate yourself to becoming the person who embodies that ideal. Be sure it is one with which the Lord will be pleased. You can be assured there will be obstacles to becoming that person. Overcoming those obstacles will help you become that person.

Walter Payton was an outstanding running back for the Chicago Bears. Trudy and I had breakfast with Walter. Sitting there, two thoughts came to mind almost simultaneously: here is a man who gained nearly nine miles as a running back in the NFL - and he did it with someone knocking him down every 4.6 yards. On any one of those tackles, he could have quit. Getting up and continuing is what made Payton great.

Think of the legion of saints who were knocked down time and again and got back up to serve the Lord faithfully. You have some of them who sit near you in church every Sunday. Hopefully, by sitting near you, they are sitting by someone who has kept the faith that is creating the character for which you want to be known.

First Baptist Church is a church with many such servants of our Lord. Therefore, that is the character of the church they constitute. Determine

McFalls, Beverly Murrell, Lyle Overbay, Charlie Ownby, George Seaton, Glenn Turner, and Jackie Underwood.

When you see them, please thank them and encourage them. During this time of transition we as individuals and as a church “Don’t Need to Give Up, Give In, or Give Out.” This is not a time to drop out, it is “A Time to Step Up.”

The Lord wants us to stay involved in Bible study, worship and the ministries of our church. We need to stay focused on being the church God wants us to be so that we will be ready when our new pastor comes to be with us.

God is more interested in right timing than time. He has guided this church

Somewhere God is creating a special man to serve Him as under-shepherd of this flock. Simultaneously, He is conditioning this church to be open and receptive to His coming. Though we long for Him to come soon, no amount of time is too great to allow God to prepare the man and the membership to come together. Pray daily for such.

Trudy and I have fallen so in love with this body that we pray daily for that wonderful coming together. We are by no means anxious to leave, but we are ambitious for God’s man to come. Pray with us for that day.

Oh, back to not growing weary in well doing. That Bible fact concludes, “in due time you shall reap.” Get ready for the harvest “in due time.”

making a connection with Jesus. The other connections are made as a natural reaction to entering into relationship with Jesus.

Every night during the Worship Service the message was directly related to the theme of Connect. On Monday night, Scott Carter spoke about how students can connect with Jesus and have relationship with Him. Tuesday night the message about connecting with each other and becoming a stronger ministry team was brought by Todd Halliburton, Chris “Beeper” Kendall and Anthony Kendall. Wednesday night’s message about connecting with both the community and the church was given by Nick Campbell. Thursday night we observed the Lord’s Supper and had a time of baptism and celebration for the week that God had given us.

This year’s Panama City was different than any I’d previously been on. It really felt like the students started to grasp what we had been preaching all week long. It

seemed like lots of broken relationships were repaired over the course of the week as the youth began to realize what it meant to connect. This year, we connected with many new friends. We reconnected with old friends. But above all else, Jesus was glorified.

for over 200 years and He will continue to do that now. Let us be found faithful and keep doing our part.

Our Mission TransitionJerry Hyder Assoc. Pastor: Senior Adults & Pastoral Care

As we are in transition as a church family looking forward to a new pastor, it is very important for each of us to do our part.

We should continue to pray daily for our Pastor Search Committee. In my 30+ years of ministry, I don’t know of any committee that has met and worked more often than this one. They love the Lord, you and our church. Their committment has taken a lot of time away from their families and other responsibilities to serve for this important task. The committee consists of Dwight Stokes as Chair, Steve Brewer, Susie Delozier, Steve Galyon, Karen King, Roger
