Calling all youth in grades 6-12!! The 2013 West River Youth Group Retreat is
coming up, Friday, February 15 - Sunday, February 17. The cost for attending
the retreat is $25 which will help to offset the retreat fees. At this year's
retreat, we will investigate what the Bible has to say about spiritual gifts and
will consider Timothy's example of fanning his gifts into flame. Our theme
verse will be "For the reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is
in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity,
but a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline" (2 Timothy 1:6-7). We are also
looking for adults to chaperone. Please let Blairlee know by Tuesday,
February 5 if you plan on attending.

Directory Update
Over the next two weeks FUMCL is updating it’s address book. There are
clipboards in the Narthex with members contact information. Stop by and
update as needed. If there is no change and we have got it all right—just
put a check next your name so we know you reviewed it. Simple as that! If
you wish to include email and phone feel free to add so that the church
family can keep in touch .
Hey New Friend! There’s A New Members Class!
Have you been attending First UMC for a while and would like
to make a deeper commitment to Christ and to his church?
Would you like to explore what it means to be a member of our
church family? Then this class is for you! On January 27,
February 3, 10, & 17, our new members’ class will meet during
Sunday School in the Parlor. Pastor Chris will lead our time
together. We’ll learn about each other, our church, and how to be
a vital part of First UMC. Attendance at all four sessions is strongly encouraged. You will then have
the opportunity to be received into membership during our services on February 24th. If you are
interested in attending, please contact the church office by phone or e-mail.
Special Guest Rev. Leon Blunt Horn Matthews Next Week
Sunday, January 20 we will have a special guest and personal friend of Pastor Chris, Rev. Leon Blunt
Horn Matthews, a Lakota Sioux pastor from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwest South
Dakota.
For the last 18 years he has been pastor of the Pine Ridge Gospel Fellowship. He and his wife Belva
also own and manage the Higher Ground Coffee House as a small business and ministry on the
reservation. Leon has been a passionate, sought-after speaker and advocate for the welfare, history,
and culture of the Oglala Lakota people.
He has recently written about his experiences on Pine Ridge
in a new book called Rez Ramblings: Living on the Pine Ridge
as a 21st Century “Injun”. Rev. Matthews will preach at both
of our services on January 20 and have copies of his new
book available for us to purchase as a way of supporting his
ministry and work on Pine Ridge.
You won’t want to miss meeting Rev. Matthews while
hearing his witness and testimony!
We look forward to having you as a new member of our BIG family!

Friendly Reminder: Cover Your Cough!
Seasonal Influenza (Flu) Flu activity continues to increase in the United States with high levels of activity in the South Central
and Southeastern regions. Other parts of the nation continue to see increases in flu cases. It's not too
late to get vaccinated--the single most important step you can take to protect yourself and others against
infection.
Strategies to stop the spread of germs to help protect you and others from getting sick with the flu bug:
Wash your hands. Frequent hand washing with soap and warm water is the first line of defense.
Alcohol-based gels and wipes also work well.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Stay home from work, school, errands and worship services when ill. This reduces the spread of
disease and preserves your energy to get well.
Cover your mouth and nose by using a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue away as
soon as it has been used.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs spread easily from your hands into the body
through these passageways.
Don’t share utensils.
Reduce the spread of germs by using your dishwasher if you have one.
Other good habits will also help you stay healthy and boost your immune system in the winter and all
year:
Get plenty of sleep
Eat a nutritious diet rich in fruits and vegetables
Drink plenty of water each day
Engage in regular physical activity
Manage your stress.
Remember ~ Influenza is a serious disease of the lungs that can make you sick for a week or more with
coughing, fever and body aches. Should you feel ill, seek medical care early, especially if you are in a
high-risk group such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions.
For more information, visit the Center for Disease Control Website at www.cdc.gov/flu
