Notes from the

Pastor’s Pen . . . I was looking back through some newsletter articles I had written some years ago. I came across one I had written about discipleship. Below is part of the article.

In mid-October a group of us attended the Vancouver District Academy. It was an exciting event with a discussion on discipleship. The definition of a Christian disciple is one who through the Spirit of God, is transformed by the teachings and practices of Jesus. I was inspired by listening to our presenters. One of the things I took away from this training is one model will not work for all, and so we must decide our own way of making disciples. One question we must first ask ourselves is, “How do WE become more like Jesus?” Steve Lewis tells us this is the heart of Christian discipleship. Then our next question is, “How do we help others become more like Jesus?” Discipleship is the core of our faith. Matthew 28:18-20 says, “And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’” God has put us in this place together at this time. It is my strong belief we can make a difference in this world, together. Jesus has called us to spread the Good News, to live and make disciples for Him. I’m not prepared to sit back and let others do the work for me. Will the work

Pastor’s Notes (Cont.)

be easy? No. Will I become discour-aged? Perhaps. But will God be with me? Always. Our District Superintendent, Rev. David Nieda, closed his letter of welcome to the attendees with these words, “Remember, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’ John 7:38 With faith, you’re engaged, confused, weary, and yet, transformed hearts will flow the life that is Christ.” So, I ask you, “Do you have faith that we can do this work together? Will you join me in becoming more deeply committed disciples of Jesus Christ? And will you also join me in helping others to become disciples of Jesus Christ?” I pray that the answers are yes.

This was written in 2010, but I think still pertinent to us today. We will be continuing our series on discipleship through the month of November. I hope you’ll spend some time reading the weekly emails about our scriptures and our series. I also hope you’ll choose to be in worship each Sunday. God’s blessings to you in this month of Thanksgiving! I am blessed to be in ministry with each and every one of you. I am also thankful God has placed me in this place with you. Thank you for your support and your ministry in Kelso. I’ll look for you in church! Pastor Vonda

Church Christmas

Decoration

Saturday, December 1 Breakfast – 8:00 a.m.

Decorating – 9:30 a.m.

~ Bring the Family ~ This year we have an extra Sunday between Thanksgiving and the beginning of Advent. Because this is the first Saturday of the month, we will have an All-Church Breakfast and decorate the church immediately after.

Poinsettias to Benefit

Needy Christmas Families Artificial poinsettias will again be used to decorate the sanctuary this Christmas season. If you would like one of these poinsettias to be in memory or honor of someone, a sign-up sheet will be available each Sunday in November. Please write down the first and last name of the person(s) you are remembering or honoring. As these are received, we will place a card pick in a poinsettia that will display a placard showing who you are honoring and/or remembering. The poinsettias will not be available for you to take home as they will stay here at the church to be used again next year. The $10 that you normally give for the purchase of a live plant will go to benefit needy Christmas families.

Finance News The year-to-date (January-September) balance for the General Fund is a negative (-$2,512.35). The Finance Committee would like to end 2018 with a zero balance, or a very small carry-over. To achieve this, we are asking that you give prayerful thought to increasing your giving through the end of the year, if you are able. A couple of suggestions include, but are certainly not limited to: increasing each month’s giving by 10%; divide your monthly giving/‘pledge’ amount by two to give an extra month (that is spread over two months); or any amount extra you may be able to give. As we work on our 2019 Budget, we are looking closely at all line items to make sure that they are needed and not budgeting more than is truly needed for each item. The Finance Committee continues to be thankful for your financial support as we go about the work of Jesus in our community. -- Finance Committee

Thanksgiving 2018

Dear Friends,

Fall is such a lovely season! I love to see the changing of the leaf colors, feel the chill in the air, make

pies, and smell the wonderful fragrances of Autumn.

The fall season normally makes us think of the upcoming holiday season.

As we draw nearer to Thanksgiving Day, let us be reminded that this holiday serves as a reminder to us

that we are to have thankful hearts all the time, not just during Thanksgiving. Having a spirit of

thankfulness is such a wonderful blessing.

Gratitude is so important to God. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 states: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this

is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” God wants us to be thankful for everything. Sometimes we can get

into a spot where our perspectives are negative, and we tend to murmur and complain, but God wants us

to have a heart that is filled with gratitude.

We have so much to be grateful for. We ought to be thankful for the air that we breathe, food to eat, a

place to call home, plenty of water, family, friends, and so much more. God has definitely bestowed

blessings all around us, and if we will simply open our heart and eyes to see, we will be eternally grateful.

God freely gives love and salvation to us. In turn, we ought to be grateful and bestow that kind of love

upon others. As this season of Thanksgiving approaches, let us be reminded to be thankful for everything

and look for ways that we can be servants. Look at those around you and see how you can be a blessing to

them.

This Thanksgiving and all throughout the holiday season count your blessings and be a blessing to others.

Invite friends and family over for dinner, make a visit to a nursing home, or buy some groceries and bless

a family in need.

You can also make a gratitude list to serve as a reminder of all the things that you are grateful for. Post it

in a place that you can see every day, so you can be reminded of what a great life you have! Being

grateful can bring you peace and joy, and God’s will is that we be full of love, peace, and joy.

This Thanksgiving, no matter what you are going through, give thanks to God. Even if you are going

through a tough time, thank God for the times that God has helped you through other difficult times and

for all the good things in your life.

This year our Thanksgiving offering will allow us to continue to be a blessing to children at Barnes

Elementary through our Backpack Buddies program. We are currently serving 26 kids and 15 families.

Your generous giving will help us to provide food for them each weekend. I am so thankful for each of you

and pray for you daily.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Pastor Vonda

Clothing/Household Items Fundraiser

The storage space for our clothing/household items fundraiser is full,

and we need to make room for the Family Promise Day Site that is coming soon to our Presbyterian Campus.

We hope to make a delivery run sometime between the Church Bazaar and Thanksgiving.

If you have a truck and/or a trailer and would like to make the drive up to Lacey, please let me know the dates you would be available.

The date with the most available drivers will be the one chosen.

We are also suspending this fundraiser until further notice after we make this delivery. Since we won't have a place to store donations, we will need to

rethink how to organize this fundraiser.

Please call Sue Coulombe at 360-636-3617 or send an email to [email protected] if you can help.
