First thing’s first - SUMMER FESTIVAL – what is it?

Summer Festival is the annual flagship event from Scotland’s national theatre for and by young people. Every summer hundreds of young people, who are passionate about theatre and per-formance, come to Glasgow from all over Scotland, to take their theatre skills and experience to the next level. Now in its 36th year, Summer Festival offers a range of courses in performance, production and technical theatre culminating in high-profile performances to packed out audiences in some of the country’s most prestigious theatres. Past participants in Summer Festivals include Conor McCarron (NEDS), Andrew Still (Hollyoaks), Karen Gillan (Dr. Who), Gerard Butler (Machine Gun Preacher, Law Abiding Citizen, 300) and KT Tunstall (Eye to the Telescope, Drastic Fantastic). Every year, Summer Festival makes the sum-mer unforgettable for young people aged 8-25 from all over Scotland.

“It was the best five weeks of my life!” – Imogen, 16, Glasgow

The Technical Theatre/Stage Management Course – what will it be like?

The Technical Theatre / Stage Management Course allows you to gain experience in the key

aspects of behind-the-scenes theatre production. Through a series of specialist skills workshops

and by working closely with professional technical and design staff, you will cover:

Lighting /Sound, Stage Management—‘running the book’ / Production Meetings & Rehearsals /

Set Construction / Set Design & Scenic Painting / Costumes/ Wardrobe / Prop Making &

Sourcing.

The Stage Management crew assist with the technical and design elements of the Foundation

Course Performances and the Main House Productions. All shows are run and operated by Tech-

nical Course participants.

The best way to get a real taste of Summer Festival is to visit some of our social networking sites – images from last year’s festival can be found our Flickr page and video clips can be found on our youtube channel. The Summer Festival blog featured posts from participants and staff – see what those who were hands on in SF ’11 had to say.

“I met lots of new friends and got a real sense of how theatre works” – Carola, 18, Glasgow

“Nice design touches come from some clever projection, while the level of shiver that can come from a nursery rhyme recital should never be underestimated” - Marianne Gunn, The Herald

How do I apply?

The application process for Summer Festival is simple:

1. Send in a completed application form Included in this pack you will find an application form. You must include the following informa-tion otherwise we cannot process your application:

A cheque or postal order for £20.00 to cover audition/administration costs made payable to Scottish Youth Theatre

a passport sized photograph

the name of a referee

the signature of your parent/guardian (if under 18 years)

We will email you to let you know we have received your application. You will then hear from us

shortly before your audition date.

2. Attend a Workshop/Interview/Audition Everyone who applies for Summer Festival is guaranteed an audition in the form of a workshop and interview. At the interview, you’ll be asked to demonstrate your interest in technical theatre. You may wish to bring along copies of set designs or other examples of any previous technical theatre experi-ence you may have. You will also attend a one hour drama workshop - this isn’t to judge your act-ing, it’s just to see how you work in a group. These workshops are informal and are to help us to find out as much about what you enjoy doing as we can (so there’s no need to worry – it’s not meant to be an intimidating experience!). Dedi-cating 5 weeks of summer to this course is a big commitment and we want to make sure you are aware of what is being asked of you. Further information about the audition will be sent to you with your audition date confirmation. Usually there will be two or three Scottish Youth Theatre staff present at the audition. WORKSHOP/ INTERVIEW VENUES - We try to hold auditions in as many parts of the country as possible. If your school or group has more than eight applicants for SF2012 then we will try to arrange for the audition team to come out to you (ask your teacher or leader to contact us). We try our best to ensure that everyone who applies is allocated an audition as near to home as pos-sible. In exceptional circumstances we may accept an audition by essay, DVD, Skype and/or tele-phone conversation. Technical Theatre / Stage Management Course auditions will take place in March 2012. As audi-

tions are usually held between 9.30am - 6pm, time off school, college or work may be required.

Attending the audition does not commit you to attending Summer Festival - if you are accepted

you will receive a formal offer of a place.

After the audition – what next?

REMEMBER: Scottish Youth Theatre receives many more applications than there are places, so

not everyone will be successful.

You will hear from us either way by the end of April. Scottish Youth Theatre offers a variety of

opportunities for young people, so if this particular course doesn’t work out, join our classes or

other courses and start developing your skills in a different way.

Fees & Fundraising Firstly, it’s important for you to get a copy of our Fundraising Pack. It contains detailed informa-tion on how to fund your Summer Festival experience. If you are coming from further afield and need to stay in Glasgow for the duration of the course, you will need to pay accommodation fees in addition to the cost of the course.
